Golden Wick, a pleasant and picturesque village on Massachusetts Hills. An old acquaintance of Harlan Draka’s, canoist Esther Rothman, who’s working for an ecological campaign, is invited to give a lecture in that small town. It’s well-known that Golden Wick is the site of a coven— a congregation of harmless witches of the Wicca cult, who worship the Great White Goddess and are regularly visited by organized tourist groups from Salem. The name of the cult awakes in Harlan an old memory: “the Order of the Waning Moon”. But where did he hear it first? Maybe in a small town in Germany, called Arnstadt… Memories and premonitions build up, and Harlan is shocked by a dream where he sees Lisa, the girl enslaved by man-eating demon Thorke— the same girl Harlan was in love with, and wasn’t able to pull away from her fate on two different occasions. Is Esther in danger? What links Lisa to the young Massachusetts witch, Asenath Prynn? And why did Ljuba – the innocent child version of the corrupted Lisa – appear to one of the young witches?
