Some sources say that his body is constantly absorbing solar energy which then gets converted into energy beams that flow from his eyes. If this theory were true, then his head would shoot backwards off of his shoulders if he fired off a powerful enough blast (for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction).
The more popular theory is that the surface of Cyclops' eyes act as interdimensional gateways leading to a dimension filled with a sort of energy that acts as a powerful concussive force in our world. If that theory were true, Cyclops would have a practically endless supply of energy for his blasts, and would never run out of juice after firing a few volleys of uber-powerful blasts.
Both of these theories have noticable flaws in them. I don't see how either of them could be right.
