Many of us grew up with Conan, in some form. Whether it be the couple of Arnold Schwarzenegger films, the numerous comic book titles, mainly through Dark Horse or Marvel Comics, or the television show He-Man, which was originally supposed to be a Conan show. Even if you've never seen the films or comics, chances are you know who this barbarian is, and now he's making his was back to the big screen.

The Coventry Telegraph released pictures from the set of the recently wrapped-up set of the newest Conan movie, and Conan is being played by 30-year old Jason Momoa, pictured right. It's been a while since we've seen Conan in a live-action film. In fact, it's been 25 years. 1985 marked the last time Conan appeared, and at that time, he was played by Arnie, and costarring in the Red Sonja film. Aside from that, supposedly this year, Ron Perlman will be voicing Conan in the animated film, Conan: Red Nails. Those are two very big names that have taken on the role, so how will Momoa do?
    == TEASER ==

    No Caption Provided
Momoa may not be as beefy as his comic book counter-part, but he looks muscular enough, and he's got the hair... Now, getting away from talking about how muscular this man looks. The main thing I'm wondering is how brutal will this film be? Is it going to be violent, like "heads getting chopped off" violent? Or will this film consist mostly of slices to the chest and punches to the face in order to get a PG-13 rating? This is the place where they could easily drop the ball. Conan is about brutality and savagery. Leaving those two aspects out of the film would make it incredibly tame and boring. Nu Boyana films has this film to come to a theater near you in 2011.  What do you think? Do we need another Conan film? What would you like to see happen?

We knew that the movie was being made from 2008. I mean, we've been getting info about the cast now for a few months (like Ron Perlman was announced as playing Conan's dad back in May, I believe).

I think this might actually be filed under "reboot", and not remake, but I could be wrong.

I'm a stargate fan and I knew this film was getting made about 6 months ago, Mamoa used to be on Stargate Atlantis and I think he'll make a good Conan! I hope they make it brutal and bloody like a good predator movie, if so this film is gonna rock.
Either way Mamoa has the physical attributes for Conan he's 6'4 and with all the muscle the guy has packed on he's gotta weigh in the 230 + range, so physically I'm sure he can pull it off.

If you want to know more about the guy here is his fan site:

I had almost forgotten about this. I guess, being a Stargate fan, some of us had the inside track. Momoa looks fantastic. If his Conan character is any bit as ruthless as Ronin, it should be epic.

Loved the comics... but am more crazy about the books. I have every single one of the Conan stories, and even the 1970s Sphere publications with the Frazetta covers :D

That being said... this movie scares me. It's already been announced else where that this film has a BS origin story about Conan losing his parents to some tyrant then going off for revenge, wonder what else they've added/ changed for the sake of a story.

If you find Book 3 of the Sphere publications (Or by Lancer books in the States), the stories in there put together would make the best Conan introduction movie.

I just hope the movie isn't a flop, because if the film is a right off, people might right off Conan too :(

I never saw the Arnold Movies, I'm more familiar with Conan The Adventurer

In regards to the film, I'm most concerned about how authentic it will be. Will it feel like a true, somewhat classic barbarian/swords and sorcery movie?

I'll give this movie a shot on Momoa alone.

I grew up with Arnold playing the role and much like the Green Hornet casting Jay Chou to replace Bruce Lee ( Which is impossible to do) following Arnold is hard to do.
Don't get me wrong I remember the old Conan movies and as cool as there where for their time, today's crowd would probably call them crap with all the advances in movie technology over the last 25 years, especially the monster in Conan the Destroyer lol!
I try to keep the same outlook on comic/syfy/fantasy movies- any movie they make is better than none (minus Jonah Hex, which G-Man nodded off while watching) because if there not willing to make a movie there is NO interest from the consumer to pay yo see it and that would be worst thing possible!

"
While I completely recommend all of Dark Horse's Conan books, including their original run, you could start at Conan The Cimmerian #0 instead of from Conan #0. It was sort of meant to be a "jumping off point" for new fans who didn't want to read the preceding 50 issues (which were fantastic). The mini-series are all pretty good too (ESPECIALLY Conan and The Midnight God, which was absolutely amazing and one of my favourite comic-books of all time, miniseries, series, or graphic novel).

The project has been in the works for awhile; it just hasn't gotten a lot of major press attention. You can find a lot more information about it here:

As far as how the film is gonna be....meh. By all accounts they're making this an adult film, so it should hopefully satisfy all cravings for barbaric violence and sex. My issue with it is that, rather than using the original stories by Howard, it seems like they're just taking a very generic sword-and-sorcery storyline and tacking Conan's name on it to boost ticket sales. It might turn out to be a half-decent film, but it won't really be a Conan film.

I'm actually more excited about the animated film you're talking about. It's actually based on Red Nails, one of Howard's original stories (and one of the best ones, at that). This is another project that's been in the works for a long time; I remember first hearing about it sometime back in '06, but it seems it just got stuck in post-production and back-burnered. Trust me, if you're looking for authentic Conan, this is what you're waiting for.
