After encountering the Kree hero Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers was accidentally subjected to otherworldly radiation that transformed her into a superhuman warrior. Calling herself Ms. Marvel, she established herself as one of the most powerful and prominent heroes and respected member of the Avengers. She has now adopted the mantle of Captain Marvel for herself.
The costume is cool, but the hair...I'm used to seeing Carol with long hair, I will not choose to buy the book based on appearance though, I will buy the #1 and buy it based on quality. That is all. Oh and I'm still calling her Ms. Marvel lol
WTF!!!, How dare they? I have nothing against Ms. Marvel, but this is totally insane. Carol, well that just about does it for me, I'm very irrate about this, and basically turning my back on Marvel at this point. I feel that the people want Mar-Vell back instead of false hopes. There's so much I could say about this, but my frustration has brought about nothing but bitter silence, thanks to the choices made by marvel as of late. I think the company needs to go in a whole different direction, with the multitude of characters, storylines, and art, the magazines only cost $3.99. Thor, Hulk,Spidey, Xmen,Avengers, and Wolvie in every title sold by Marvel. Yes, I'm ticked off about Marvel not bringing back Mar-Vell, but I'm also ticked off about all the scams they're hitting us( the readers) with! The long drawn out storylines that can be explained in two-three book arcs instead of a 12 book arc ( 1 year) to say nothing.The vampire (Twilight Syndrome) fazes, and over publicized events. Somebody need to really take control at Marve and Dc as well, there are about 20 Batman titles now ! Anyway did I mention That I'm ticked off that Mar-vell isn't comic back, I hope someone from Marvel and Dc reads this as well,until then picture Stone Cold Steve Austin doing his famous finger gesture!
Although I am not over the moon about her new look, I am glad that she is getting her own series, she deserves it, is also highly deserving of becoming Captain Marvel.
Question! I am I right in assuming the this series will take place in her past and that they are changing that past, if so, how would effect her current run with the Avengers series she's in.

Not the whole series, only the start, meaning the first arc. And I don't think they're changing her past, at least not by much. Think of it more as if they are fleshing out her background/character a bit more.
I wasn't gonna talk about Carol but she looks like somebody's sidekick now, this whole idea reaks. She has already established her own identity in Marvel Comics as Ms. Marvel even when she was using her binary powers with the name change, she was still identified as Ms. Marvel and that will still be the case here. In a few months she will go back to her former self after multiple complaints and disappear in the M arvel Universe for a period of time which she has a habit of doing since she has been in Marvel Comic, we all know this, come on where will she be in lets say December or who will care or notice. Iliked the character,but Marvel should have said Carol changes her name in Secret Avengers 27.Maybe the should have called her Gladiator Girl since her costume favors his, or Corsair and starjammers, opps Carol and the Starjammers! Bring back the real Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell) no more substitutes, quit using the character for teasers or a boost for sales!
@RalfvdH: We all like what we like. Its a new look which I support. I hate seeing people always looking the same. I really think heroes would constantly change their costumes much more frequently then what they do in the comics.
I wanted a new Carol series and I like the talent so I'm for it. It's rather out in left field, but my experience with Marvel is when a book heads in a really weird direction it usually ends up actually being the one that's a good series (see Remender's Venom for one example), so I'm pretty open to this. Someone else made a cool deduction as well about the comparison between her new look and Marvelman's costume. That seems like reaching, but I remember Marvel stating this was the year they would bring him into the fold? I don't like how forced this seems otherwise, but I think that may actually pay off as generally I feel when Marvel takes something in a predictable direction it ends up coming off weak.
I'm noting too while many are now used to her full hair, she has had several others, and even her original was shorter (a few people seem to have Moonstones Dark Reign look confused with Carol as well, and both were outspoken about how much they hated that look, the costume, and both were uncomfortable in the crotch binding bare legged costumes, just saying). Also full hair really doesn't make sense for a high speed flyer as it would obscure vision and such. The new hair makes her look strong, confident and in control of her self.
At any rate, she has to get more character respect in her own series then she does currently in team books and from certain writers (Bendisto!), so I likey (

Extremly happy about this news! she is my favorite female character, but having said that i hate the short hair. But dig the costume and the mask, but ya the hair is awful, wish they just gave her a ponytail or a bob cut or something.
Not a fan of the hair or costume, but I approve of her promotion to CAPTAIN Marvel. I'd like to see an updated version of her original Mar-Vell inspired costume. It's just SO ICONIC in my mind.
I'm happy for Ms.Marvel she definitely deserves her own ongoing again but I'm really disappointed that Mar-Vell isn't returning. Really Marvel!? All the characters you bring back from the dead and the one time I WANT you to bring back someone you don't!
Damn it. I loved her Ms Marvel outfit. I really thought she was really strong enough to have her own rouge gallery and series. This just seems like a stand in role....My favorite marvel gal
I really felt like Carol had come into her own as Ms. Marvel. If you really think about it, modern comic audiences probably have more awareness for Ms. Marvel than they do Captain Marvel at this point due to her being around a great deal longer as well as her being somewhat high profile in the past few years. The series sounds interesting, and I'm very glad that she's going to be back in her own ongoing series again, but I really hate the new look. Something about it is very "lesbian Power Girl" to me. Only time will tell if she'll end up going back to her roots.
Its about time they took her seriously, I like her get promoted into the title that should have been hers when Mar-vell passed. The costume is horrid. I hope they treat it seriously not like its ally mcbeal train wreck that was the Power Girl series.

That wasn't what the fans really wanted so they cancelled it and said: "We had a story to tell, we did, now it's over". After that they can launch a new Ms. Marvel series where she won't look like a drag queen. I did not like it, at all. First there is tradition. Ms. Marvel is a classic character who does not need an upgrade. She is and always has been one person: Carol Danvers. Forget her days as Binary or Warbird. They passed into comics oblivion, thank God. Also, forget that strange female-Thing, Sharon Ventura. Weird woman, as much as this new uniform is. One must stick to the classics, don´t you think?
Marvel needs a Captain Marvel, now more than ever, since the Distiguished Competitor gave up the name. It could be Mar-Vell? Sure, but I like to think he is at peace, like Don Hall ( Dove ). Mar-Vell is an inspiration. Marvel should bring back Phyla or Genis-Vell. Or both. Wouldn´t be awsome to have two Captains instead of one? And under Carol´s tutelage. Marvel´s "Marvel Family". Think about the plot twists one of the architects could bring. Or leave it to Peter David...
While it's nice seeing a female hero who actually gets to cover up most of her body, rather than just wear a swimming costume, the new outfit isn't my favourite. Can't they find a look that is both cool and avoids making the character look like a cheap glamour model?

This look is soooo much better and fits her new title. She's a Captain so she's gotta look like one. And since she has a military background it makes more sense imo
Glad to see another of Marvel's ladies headlining a series and far preferable to bringing yet another character back to life. Really don't like the short haircut at all, though.
I like that she's covered, but that short hair is...bad. It doesn't suit her in my opinion. or maybe just that the art isn't that great... sorry marvel, you're losing me...
