We’ve been notified that Black Film’s confirmed that Derek Luke is playing Howling Commando, Gabe Jones, in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER. Considering how Cap didn’t have a ton of African American colleagues in World War II, the possible roles were kind of limited, but it’s now been official confirmed. Luke’s biggest role prior up until now is surely his turn as Antwone Fisher in the eponymous biopic, but he’s actually played a WWII soldier previously in MIRACLE AT SANTA ANNA.
Like the rest of Nick Fury’s squad, Jones has a quirky gimmick —a trumpet to match that of his angelic namesake. In the comics, he'd even play that trumpet into battle, but I get the feeling that will be one of the more fantastical flourishes that gets downplayed in favor of realism for the movie. I also suspect that the Howling Commandos will probably have the most revisions of any characters in the flick, with Dum Dum Dugan likely leading the outfit in Fury’s place and Bucky possibly being a member of them as well. I suppose we’ll have to wait four months to find out (or maybe just until the full trailer rolls out?)Captain America
Character » Captain America appears in 11750 issues.
During World War II, Steve Rogers volunteered to receive the experimental Super-Soldier Serum. Enhanced to the pinnacle of human physical potential and armed with an unbreakable shield, he became Captain America. After a failed mission left him encased in ice for decades, he was found and revived by the Avengers, later joining their ranks and eventually becoming the team's leader.
Derek Luke's Role in the Captain America Movie Confirmed
Zzzzzz...
Yeah, not enough respect for Gabe. They put him in an episode of Avengers:EMH. I wonder of most of the detractors think this is just more evidence a "left wing conspiracy" for more diversity in Marvel films by putting him in the film?
Seriously so few people know who Gabe Jones is!? How disgraceful hell I knew who Gabe was way before any of the Howling Commandos. Hell I grew up watching this guy on TV on the Incredible Hulk TV Show. Any who doesn't know Gabe Jones should just cut themselves and get it over with
eh this could go either way as I've never seen anything about this man or what he does the funny thing is hardly any african americans fought in WW2 yet there was a ton of african americans in Vietnam so in essence there would be more roles for an African american in a Punisher film

There were no supersoldiers or nazis with red skulls in world war 2 either. But there were some black americans that fought. The Tuskegee Airmen of the 99th Fighter Squadron, the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Medium Bombardment Group were all black americans, so having a black amercian fighting in world war 2 is actually more historically accurate than, say, hydra....
