    Scott breaks up with Buffy the day after asking her to the Homecoming dance because he senses she isn't focused on him, which is correct as she's secretly nursing her old boyfriend Angel back to health.

    Buffy learns that her favorite teacher does not remember her, and that Cordelia didn't tell her about the yearbook photo day as she was supposed to, Buffy decides to compete with her for the Homecoming Queen title.

    Meanwhile, Mr. Trick announces a competition called "SlayerFest '98", wherein a group of supernatural types will compete to kill the slayers.

    Musing on the Nature of Competition 0

    "We all have the desire to win, whether we're human... vampire... and whatever the hell you are, my brother," says Mr. Trick in this episode, and it's pretty much an accurate summary of the episode's theme. Angry with Cordelia, and desiring to be thought of as a normal high school girl, Buffy decides to run against her for the title of Homecoming Queen.
