Breaking Into Comics The Marvel Way # 2

NOTE * " Breaking Into Comics The Marvel Way" is not a guide to breaking into the comic book industry. It is a showcase of different up-and-coming artists interpretations of the Marvel Universe, akin to the Millenial Visions title. This review focuses on one story in particular from "Breaking Into Comics The Marvel Way # 2", entitled "Oh, The Places You'll Go!"

Holy S@#t! Jonathan Hickman and Gabriel Hernandez Walta present an alternate reality tale starring the New Mutants following the events of the Asgardian Wars, and it is quite a doozy. enslave them in a manner of devious, painful, and cruel ways. Most readers will ask themselves "why?" Why would Magik do such a thing without being antagonized? My guess is that it had something to do with her becoming the Enchantress of Earth-904, and the thrall it placed her under. Hickman never explains why, and the story moves so briskly, it really isn't relevant to the plot. It's a showcase of Walta's dark, multi-layered work, and a brutal Battle Royale-esque script that serves as its companion piece. Does Magik destroy her teammates, and step closer to becoming Belasco's Darkchilde? You'll have to read the issue, and find out. I give "Oh, The Places You'll Go!" 3 out of 5 stars. It was a brutal, bloody little violence-fest.
