Hmm.
Never thought about it. Possibly Atheist?
Character » Batman appears in 23648 issues.
I have a question for all of you Batman fans out there. Does he believe in God? For some reason, Batman comes of as agnostic, to me (Doesn't know if God exists). What does everyone else think?
Static Shock says:
"Charmcaster says:"He's Episcopalian/Catholic"The site says that he's split between Catholic and Episcopalian (His
mom was the former and his dad was the latter). But, in some scans, his
mother and father's gravesites have Christian crosses. Also, in the
future, Bruce's gravesite has a Christian cross as well. But just because his parents had a religious background doesn't mean he shares the same views.
The site also
says that his religious views vary with the writer. More often than
not, he seems very agnostic, to me. And, sometimes, athiest. And, I say
that because there have been times when people will try to explain the
existence of magic, mysticism, and religion. However, being the type of
person he is, he feels those things are non-existent, and says that
there's a explanation behind it, that it's something that cannot be
explained with science alone. That sounds very agnostic to me. He had
this discussion with Superman once, and with Zatanna about magic in the
last issue of Superman/Batman (when Superman encountered magic
kryptonite).
So, I don't know. He may have been depicted as being
religious in some stories depending on the writer, but based on the way
he carries himself, he seems very agnostic.

I see what your saying about his being agnostic. Also, if he was a catholic I feel like he wouldn't be so apt for vigilantism, if that makes any sense.

Nightwing says:
"My parents didn't much talk about god. Bruce never did. Though I'm sure he believed in the devil"
Nighthunter says:

That reminds me. There was a villain that told Batman that he would see him in Hell, and Batman said that he probably would see him there one day.

remember the villain?
Nighthunter says:
"remember the villain?"
I'm thinking the Mad Hatter... I really don't remember. A lot of Batman's villains are psycopaths.
Gottheit says:
"Batman must have some degree of belief in some sort of afterlife, as he has visited Heaven and Hell, hasn't he? With the rest of the JLA...I don't know, man. Not sure how much he thinks about it."
What issue was this?

hey I remember this quote too, I forgot which villain also but when you brought up the Mad Hatter, it might be in the latest Mad Hatter story arc... not sure but for some reason this story came to mind.
Daredevil is blind but he can see. everyone knew his identity long before Civil War, since he never knew when there were, like, 20 people in the room where he changed(blind, you see.) Really a strange character. He always made people stay where they are as he felt his way to the room to feel their face and pummel them, yet his villains never caught on that he was blind. It was really insulting that they expected us to believe all this. Seriously.
I am reasonably sure Batman has always erred on the side of atheism in any book I've read with him. Being raised by parents of a religion doesn't automatically make you a disciple.

Agreed.
Whatever religion Batman's creators, Bob Kane and Bill Finger, and his designer, Kane, might have practiced, or whatever religion Bruce Wayne's parents might have been shown practicing in the comics, Batman could never really belong to any faith because all their emphases on forgiveness offend and outrage his sense of justice.

Hes Catholic I am sure of it.....
basic reason is the premise of the religon and his character......"Its a Guilt based religon" Unlike other christian faiths Catholics are not "saved" nor "reborn" they have to work on redemption till the day they die.
Now dont jump on me I am Catholic always have been.
"Batman does believe in God but he also has read the New Testament in James where it says that faith without works is died. Which means that he believes in God but he knows he must help and do his part."

come on... please people, use some common sense...
Batman, whilst in the JLA has not only encountered The Specter, the right hand of God himself... but has also worked alongside, and became friends with Zauriel, an actual Angel, one of the original Host from heaven...
not only this, but during the "Heaven on Earth" arc... the JLA actually witnessed the Gates of Heaven opening...
i'd say that goes beyond having Faith in God Almighty, and becomes downright proof of his existence lol
if Batman doesn't believe in God, and lets face it, if he doesn't in the face of all that proof, he doesn't deserve to have the moniker of the Worlds Greatest Detective... more like the Worlds Greatest Idiot...

"Gambler said:I dont believe he's ever come right out and said. But theres more then enough circumstantial evidence to back it up."Episcopalian/Christian (lapsed)Is he really? I had no idea."
I personally believe in separation of church and comics :)
Seriously, I think Batman, having travelled the world and been exposed to numerous cultures and lifestyles would most likely have a respect for all religions, using aspects of all philosophies that help him become a better crime fighter. I imagine he would partake in some elements of the Eastern religions.
IMO though, comics shouldn't deal overly too much with religion unless it's central to the core of a character's personality (such as Nightcrawler for example).
And just a side note, Joker could well be of any religion. I've seen some posts on fstdt (fundies say the darndest things) that are ten times crazier than anything the Joker could come up with. I'm not sure I'm comfortable with the demonization of Atheists either by claiming Joker is one because he is evil and crazy. Just because some people haven't been convinced of any of them doesn't make them evil.
I personally think Joker is a Scientologist though :) And I swear I saw Aquaman at the airport pushing Islam last week!
