    Batman Begins 0

Amazing, just like Batman Begins movie (is it a coincidence? That the movie just came out in 2005?). It's the most appropiate word for this excellent piece of art, Mazzucchelli and Miller really nailed the very nature of the Batman with this 4-part arc, i don't know if it's because i'm a BIG fan of the Batman (since i was a kid, like Mazzucchelli) Or it's because i own this story on it's 2005 reprint that features afterwords by Mazzucchelli and Miller themselves. The writing it's pretty strong, ...

    Batman: Year One Review 0

Original Review: Pixelated Sausage        Batman: Year One is not my first graphic novel revolving around the “caped crusader”, but it did make me aware of how Batman came to be. I gained most of my Batman knowledge through the various films throughout the years, but they all seem tame in comparison to Batman: Year One. The novel is dark and gritty and it’s hard to find anyone who doesn’t have at least one flaw, even Batman. Whether the pain is emotional or physical, Batman: Year One really remi...

Perhaps it was lost on me 1

This was the first batman TPB I read, and to be honest it bored the hell out of me. I'm going to assume that because it was not so much a reboot of the series as it was a tweaking of the beginning story of Batman that the slight changes were lost on me, but whatever the reason was, it's the only comic to date (apart from Superman: Day Of Doom) that I had massive trouble getting into.  I found the art dated and uninteresting, the lettering was difficult to read, and the story seemed to drag on an...

Frank Miller has done it again! 0

After the stunning "The Dark Knight Returns," Frank Miller has again written a Batman story reguarded to be among the best ever written. After exploring the end of Batman in "TDKR" Miller now shows us his vision of the beginning of Batman, Batman: Year One. This is a brilliant book. Gotham City is literally a dump. Mazzucchelli perfectly illustrates Batmans world. Everything looks muddy and grimy. The characters all look stunning too, the art work is just great, I'm seriously lost for words.Year...

Rise Of The Dark Knight 0

The Story:  The focus is on the first year of Batman's career as the Dark Knight. James Gordon arrives in Gotham and begins his quest to bring justice to the city. Selina Kyle begins her masquerade as Catwoman and the public confuse her as being Batman's assistant to her displeasure. The beginning of a mutual friendship between Batman and Gordon begins.   My Thoughts:  Written by legendary writer Frank Miller, this story was scribed before I was even born. The story still holds up for coming out...

    Is It Just Me? 1

With all the praise this graphic novel receives, I'm sometimes ashamed to admit that I didn't really like it. This book was recommended to me (someone who has just jumped head first into the world of graphic novels) as the best place to start reading Batman. Honestly, I think everyone should stop and think before handing this over to brand new readers. I'm not saying it's terrible, it does a good job developing the characters and it's a fine origin story, but let's face it, it feels a bit dated,...

Best Origin for Bruce Wayne 0

I recently re-read Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli's collection of four issue run titled "Batman: Year One," and was instantly reminded of why it might be my favorite Batman origin story of all time. This book was a big inspiration for the "Batman Begins" film that came out in 2005, so being a fan of that representation I was very drawn to the mood and atmosphere that "Year One" utilizes. It starts with Bruce Wayne's humble beginnings as Batman, showing the difficulties of being a masked vigi...

    Batman: Year One Review 0

When i read something by Frank Miller i'm always amazed ! Just like this time, but this is one of the best comic books in history in my opinion. The story of Bruce Wayne shows you a lot of thing that you can't read in a website for comics. But this is not only for Batman. It shows really much of the personality of James Gordon and James Gordon Jr. who before this book was not a guy you can know about only with hearing his name. Catwoman play a very important role in this too. I think it's the ti...

GN Review -- Batman: Year One / Frank Miller, David Mazzucchelli, 0

Originally posted on my blog, The Comics Cove, not too long ago...I've seen many takes on Batman's origin story--hell, I've privately tried writing my own, just to see if I could do a good job--and it's always a titanic undertaking. You have to have the character down cold before you can really move along to plotting and interpreting everything else. Batman: Year One, while not my absolute favorite re-telling of the Dark Knight's initial forays into crime-fighting, is nevertheless one of the mil...

Batman’s first year on the job! 0

Brief History: To be honest, I have actually first heard about Batman through the 90s cartoon series “Batman: The Animated Series,” which apparently, I have actually had my first exposure to the world of comics through so many animated series throughout the 90s. Since I have been reading a lot of comics lately, especially the “X-Men” comics, I wanted to try a different comic book series and that is where I started reading up on “Batman.” So, the first “Batman” comic I have actually came up...

    Batman Begins 0

I read this book after having seen Batman Begins milion Times, even after watching it’s animated adaptation… and I still loved it. I mean… havin seen the Nolan Origin story and the animated one… well, this book has not much to add, still it reads great. It is basically the same story overall you get to see in Begins, with a few differences, but it is great to see where the roots of the Nolan-verse lie...The artwork might seem dated (because it is) but it really is still great. Although you ...

    Jim Gordon: Year One 0

The complaints that this is too much like Batman Begins, or that once you've seen that you don't need to read this, do not make sense to me. Obviously Nolan and Co. were influenced by this - they didn't hide that fact - but that does not take away from the merit of this. Additionally, the significant differences are enough to keep them still separate as entities. I enjoyed that this was mainly from Jim Gordon's perspective - I'm glad Frank Miller was partly responsible for metamorphosing Gordon ...

    Batman - Year One 1

During the last two days i've read "Year One" four times. I seriously think now it's the best graphic novel ever made. For my entire life i agreed with the most people and rankings and stuff that the greatest Graphic Novel is either "Watchmen" or "The Dark Knight Returns". And i really love both of these stories ( TDKR a little bit more i think ) but now, i think they are no match for this masterpiece.STORYWhat i love about this comic's story is that it never gets boring. There's so many diffren...

    Batman Year One 0

I know this review isn't necessary. This comic came out a while ago, but i only just recently read it and i feel like posting this. First off, this comic is good. I really enjoyed it, the thing is, It's slightly misleading. Most of it is actually describing the start of James Gordon. Yes, Batman is in it and is just starting out, but it was Gordon that got more time in the spotlight. Don't let that stop you from reading though, i thoroughly enjoyed seeing Gordon try to adapt to Gotham and to ...
