Part one of a two-part story detailing the complex history of Dr. Kirk Langstrom, a.k.a. Man-Bat! How does Man-Bat’s past connect to Batman’s future?

A homeless man's body has been found in a Gotham City alley and he's been drained of all his blood. Batman investigates and it leads him to Kirk Langstrom who swears it's not him or his alternate persona Man-bat.

Meanwhile, Kirk's father Abraham Langstrom is at his business headquarters and after sending his employees home for the night, injects himself with the Man-bat formula and changes into the Man-Bat. He then feeds on a homeless man, killing him.

Meanwhile, in the Batcave, Batman runs a blood sample from the latest crime and learns that it belongs to Abraham. Batman then speaks to Lucius Fox about making a antidote and learns that Abraham and the Bruce's father knew each other, but were not friends.\

Kirk confronts his father, but is powerless to stop him. The next night, Batman tracks down Man-bat but this time the antidote breaks and Batman is through to the ground, as Man-bat flies away.
