The Avengers are Earth's Mightiest Heroes right? So why isn't Silver Surfer one of them?
Avengers
Team » Avengers appears in 7704 issues.
The Avengers are Earth's mightiest heroes and foremost super-team... "There came a day, a day unlike any other, when Earth's mightiest heroes found themselves united against a common threat. On that day, the Avengers were born - to fight the foes no single super hero could withstand! Heed the call, then - for now, the Avengers Assemble!"
Why isn't Silver Surfer an Avenger?
Just because the Avenger's tag line is "earth's mightiest heroes" doesn't mean that they are all the powerful heroes in Marvel. The Avengers are not the JLA.
As has been said, Surfer operates on a much bigger scale, he travels across the universe.
Surfer hates being stuck on earth, it was a curse Galactus once placed on him.
The Avengers teams form by means of "fate." The heroes gather together to fight a larger, common threat and decide that there is a specific purpose to all of them being present at the same time. Surfer has never showed up in one of those cases because he's been in space.
Nighthunter says:
"besides if he was there they wouldn't need another hero in the team lol"
True, so true. Though JLA has GL, Superman, and Martian Manhunter. And a lot of the Avengers seem to be heroes that I for one have never heard of. SS is one of Marvel's biggest heroes. Besides, the Avengers might need someone who can travel in space.

They have plenty of people who can travel in space. The Avengers have a very rich history of members comeing and going.
As for why the SS is not part of them, well like the others said he travels and operates on a larger scale, and he has not always been on the good side (as far as earth is conserned).
I think that the Silver Surfer is a better loner than a team player. He once joined the Defenders. Yet, if you ever read the full run of the first series, he maybe showed-up 12 times tops. Let him remain a hero in space. Their are heroes who are better at doing the whole lone rider thing. Like a certain spider we all know.

Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does what ever a Spider can...
Actually, The Silver Surfer did become an Avenger in "What If The Avengers had fought Galactus?" so I think we could put him down as a member even though it was an alternate version of him. Oh and in Avengers Forever #11, one of the good alternate reality Avengers seen flying about was an alternate Silver Surfer.
"Vance Astro said:They could totally get him out of that if they wanted to make him an Avenger but there is no point because then they'd have to depower him."Silver Surfer isn't an Avenger for the same reason Jean isn't an X-man anymore.Too damn powerful."Not to mention he is the servant of the greatest cosmic predator and all that....

"He is not from Earth, although it wouldn't be a bad idea ti show up in the AvengersCrossovers wouldn't be bad, but if he was a member it would be boring.
"
Other Avengers member:"Oh no! Doctor Doom has taken over the world!"
(Five seconds later) Silver Surfer: "Stopped him".
He's not from Earth
They already have a brick like Thor
He could probably solo most of the Avengers enemies in one night
I thought he was a Avenger when he was stuck on earth and Green Lantern is part of the Justice League and he has a whole sector to defend so why cannot the SS be a Avenger. This makes no sense. Distance means nothing to the Surfer so that's not a good reason. ooops he was never a avenger but he has worked with them.

I guess this.
Because the Silver Surfer like everyone else has said is a loner, is wayyyyyy to powerful for Earths daily problems, he doesn't like being on Earth for too long because he gets a feeling of claustrophobia and lastly Silver Surfer is nothing like Green Lantern other than the fact that they're both cosmic entities.
He's already a Defender and an Annhialator. He's much to powerful and handles cosmic problems of a much larger scale.

lmao um I did not say they were twins.....
Hes hardly too powerful given whose in the Avengers Now lineup but theres very little reason for him to be an Avenger. Hes not an Earthling, doesnt have many big ties to Earth (not sure what became of that Fraction plot point from the end of the Galactus Seed story), would have little interest in most Earth-centric things etc. Just doesnt fit.
Also - hes owned by Fox in terms of movie rights and unless Hickman had a real hankering to do something with the character I cant see Marvel going out of their way to do much with him (current series notwithstanding).
SS is my all time favorite character I just wish they would make a movie already.
The universe is a huge place it would be nice to see him in the avenger story arc doing something to save the day some place in the great void of space.
I mean no matter how strong you are or how fast nobody can be everyplace at once.
This is why you have a team.
He has no reason to be an avengers. Same reason he doesn't really need to join any other teams, he has too much going on cosmically. Also, he really doesn't like being stuck on earth. If anything, he would be an F4 member, he has a much better repoire with any of them then the Avengers. Earth is just another planet to him, hundreds of other planets have their own superteams and you don't see Surfer joining the.

A big difference between surfer and green lantern is their connection to earth. Avengers are mostly an earth based team like the Just League. Green Lantern however is from earth, and earth falls within his sector to defend, so he'd both be defending his home planet and a planet within his sector. Surfer on the other hand is not from earth, and doesn't have the job to protect a section of space that the earth falls in, so he has no reason to be on earth except for when he wants to say hi to people on it, but even then he is a loner and wouldnt really want to drop by often.
Partly because he only visits Earth once in a while rather than live here. Secondly, he is on/off leading the cosmic pac-man around to eat worlds.

@arthurkerr: Silver Surfer wasn't an Avenger when he was on earth. And GL lives on Earth so He can still hang with the league.
Too strong
so is Thor, really.
