Another Issue, Another Reason Not To Care 4

Bendis and Romita's first issue of 'Avengers', didn't really grab me for a variety of reasons, but it didn't offend me too much either. It just kind of existed in my pile of comics. Anyway, I got over the few faults and gave the issue 3 stars or something.  This issue, however, is totally ridiculous.  First of all, it should be noted that I think Bendis' treatment of the Sentry is the single worst piece of comic book writing ever. Not only did he treat the character with total contempt, but his ...

    Misplaced Optimism? 0

Detractors of this issue are spot on in their criticisms. There is a lot wrong with this issue. Chiefly, among these, is Romita Jr.'s lackluster (at best) art. Never before have I seen such a bland art take away so much from a story's potential. Why the high rating? I think there is an incredible amount of latitude as to where this story can go. I think Bendis may just be on to something pretty impressive. Yes, the characterization of Wonder Man is as another moody berserker powerhouse (never th...

Bendis Doesn't Read "Invincible Iron Man" 1

Plot & Action: A potential new Avenger is tracked down, the Avengers find a way to look at future alternate universes, that machine is broken, and that's about it. The last page is somewhat cool, but there just wasn't a whole lot that went on here. The issue was dominated by Stark and the newcomer to the team. Character Work: It's obvious that Bendis isn't reading Matt Fraction's "Invincible Iron Man" as Tony Stark was handled completely wrong. Stark talks of Stark Industries and having thin...

Avengers Needs A New Artist 0

For once, the cover is actually a good representation of what happens in this issue.   Bendis is moving along at a good pace with his "time is broken" plot as we see the Avengers wisely not trusting Kang at his word and confirming for themselves what is going on. I always appreciate when writers show heroes doing this rather than skipping over it or having them jump straight into the fray. It really helps cement the notion that the Avengers are the professionals here.  As expected, Noh-Varr join...

I'm giving this one more issue... 0

Nothing about this book impressed me. Bendis bought enough goodwill with last month's issue to get me to ignore Romita's horribly ugly art and buy a second issue. Well, I guess this is what I deserve. The art somehow got worse. There's a particular panel where Spider-Man's face just looks absolutely miserable. The writing, while not nearly as bad as the art, comes off as just.....boring, really. I like the idea of the whole Wonder-Man plot, but he's coming across as a serious, malicious bad guy,...

    AVENGERS #2 0

Issue 2 in this new Avengers series didn't impress me much. I really loved the first issue, but something about this issue just didn't feel right with me. I have to say that the story by Brian Bendis was pretty good, i actually like where he's taking this series so far. The art on the other hand... What can i say, the art just looked rushed, and the characters were just badly drawn. I've always liked John Romita Jr's art, but now it seems that his style is devolving. I mean his art in Amazing Sp...

It's a used four dollar coloring book! 3

The Story: The second part to the Avengers grand storyline during the Heroic Age. As they must find a way to reach Kangs timeline and save the universe as usual. Recruiting a new member into the team that could help the team of heroes travel through time, the Avengers find themselves facing a new and much more serious threat.  The Good: This is why I gave this comic three stars, - A productive and very interesting storyline, I liked how this issue kept to the Avengers concept that involve a team...

A glimpse of the Future 2

Cover The cover is not good at all. Even though the concept of seeing Wonderman and not knowing in till you read the story it is Wonderman. Story The Avengers find Marvel Boy and need his help to go to the future. He agrees to help. Tony and Marvel Boy are building the Machine to see the future. It is ready and they see four worlds that could happen. One world is broken because The Avengers children killed Kang. Then Wonderman said that he never wanted them to be Avengers and starts attacking t...

I don't know what you people are smoking... 2

...but John Romita Jr is a good comic book artist.  Hate all you want, the man has drawn a ton of comics over the years, and most of them are pretty easy on the eyes.  Perhaps what some people don't like about him is the fact that his art is not part of the seemingly new movement of a 'realistic' or 'cinematic' approach; his is a distinct old-school style.  He's drawn most of these characters in their solo books, and it's a real treat to see them all together here 'under his pen,' so to speak.  ...

John Romita Jr. - Love Him or Leave it be 1

I know, I know, not everybody like JRJ's art, and I must have to agree that it's not an easy style to bear, to digg in, it's difficult to digest his way of drawing, but I also must be fair and admit that he is one of Marvel's greatest artists (a milestone) and that issue # 2 did improve from the first one.  The good dialogues that Bendis writes did the trick for this issue: he made it perfectly ok  to interact and interwine all the Avengers' initial tension (Spider did started to make his jokes...

    "Time isn't a linear thing" 0

Be sure to check out my review of The Avengers #1 .  100 Words Or LessThe Avengers are still processing the ultimatum from Kang and when they decide it's not a trap, enlist the help of Noh-Varr to help them build a time traveling device to go into the future to stop their offsprings from destroying the world. After getting a glimpse of the future, the Avengers are attacked by Wonder Man, who wants to prevent the team from being put back together. Will Wonder Man stop the Avengers before they ar...
