When the Olympaians defeated the Titans, Atlas was sentenced to bear the weight of the heavans upon his shoulders for all eternity as punishment for opposing the Gods. Hercules first encountered Atlas while performing his eleventh labor; obtaining the Golden Apples of the Heperides. Atlas convinced Hercules to take the weight of the heavens from him so he could get the apples for Hercules. Hercules did so and when Atlas returned three hours later he told Hercules he would take the apples to Eurysteus for him. Hercules agreed, but asked Atlas to hold the heavens briefly so he could get a pad for his shoulders to make holding the weight more comfortably. Atlas took the weight back and Hercules made off with the apples, thus accomplishing the labor. Hercules and Atlas met and battled in Washington, D.C. during modern times when the power-mad Amazon Artume (daughter of Hippolyta)used the power of the Omphalos to free Atlas from his burden while also using it to try to re-shaped reality.
