To get the secret of the magic potion, Julius Caesar decided to resort to secret police chief Roman Fielhastalfinus (caricature of French actor Bernard Blier), who entrusts his best spy, Ceroceroséix, appear in person in the village and is done with the formula. Ceroceroséix (with a physical spoof Sean Connery, the first James Bond film) is druid (although the Romans used for revenge) and may receive their formula because, according to ancient tradition, passed from mouth only druid druid's ear. In parallel, the Phoenician merchant Economicrisis (in his second appearance after Asterix the Gladiator) returns to the village to sell their products, but forget to bring along "rock oil", one of the many ingredients of the magic potion. In order to get it before the Romans discovered it is impossible to continue making magic potion, Economicrisis back to Phoenicia with Asterix, Obelix and Dogmatix Ceroceroséix spy, who has not managed to gain the full confidence of Getafix and therefore tries to sabotage mission from within. The trip becomes an adventure through the lands of Phoenicia, Palestine and elsewhere in the Middle East, dotted with references to subjects as varied as film of espionage, the Bible, the 1973 oil crisis and the situation of permanent war between different countries, peoples and ethnic groups in the area.
