The Shadow Lengthens last edited by pikahyper on 09/04/19 03:27PM View full history

Ten years have passed since Nathan Summers, aka Cable, defeated Apocalypse. But the past keeps colliding with the present, when Nathan is introduced to “Professor”, a mysterious man with ties to his parents. Cable listens to the legend of the X-Men, but when story-teller Fossil declares that is was Mother Askani who killed Apocalypse, Cable loses his cool.

The Askani timeline is now a post-Apocalypse world. There are some to want to remember the past while others, like the New Canaanites, simply want control. Young Nathan Dayspring is now a teenager and has piqued the interest of Umbridge, a New Canaanite official. While captured, Nathan is introduced to Blaquesmith, who helps him escape. He then begins his search for the last of the Askani Clan. Stryfe and Ch'Vayre are off on their own in hopes of finding a way to inherit Apocalypse's thrown.

Note: The artificial entity "Professor" is a rebooted Ship.

    Synopsis

In a temple, an elder preaches to an audience about the fabled X-Men and the eventual rise of the Askani. Nathan Dayspring is unaffected by the stories and, upon seeing an image of the Mother Askani (his lost and forgotten sister Rachel), Nathan stands and attributes the fall of Apocalypse to living, breathing people and not some superstition of the past. Before the elder and Nathan can exchange too many doctrinal barbs, Nathan's stomach becomes inflamed. This prevents he and his friend Tetherblood from leaving the temple and they are arrested by 'Strator Umbridge of the New Canaanites as dissidents. Umbridge loads the teens onto a ship and sets course to meet with Tribune Haight.

As the ship docks in New Canaan, Nathan is too embroiled in pain to escape. Time stops, however, and a man/creature named Blaquesmith introduces himself to the boys. He notes that there is something odd with Nathan's physiology and pulls an orb from Nathan's chest. The orb is sentient and introduces itself to Nathan. By this time, Blaquesmith has exhausted his strength and collapses.

Meanwhile, 'Strator Umbridge has met with Tribune Haight and he gives her the charge to locate the final remnants of the Askani (rumored to be in Ebonshire) and to completely destroy the order, as such action should ensure the New Canaanites the power to take the throne of Apocalypse. Further, Umbridge is to find a young man whom the Askani believe to be their chosen one. As she takes leave, Umbridge wonders if her prisoner Nathan is this chosen one.

In Ebonshire, Askani novitiate Aliya is brought before Madam Sanctity and told to prepare the way for the Askani'son. Aliya wonders if the rumors are true and that Madam Sanctity is going insane.

In New Orleans, Stryfe enters one of Apocalypse's old monuments and tortures some people that had sought shelter. Ch'Vayre urges Stryfe to cease and focus on the task at hand: obtaining the throne of Apocalypse. They begin this task by activating a Zero unit whose primary function is the resurrection of the High Lord.

Back in New Canaan, Blaquesmith has regained his strength and uses his powers learned from the Askani to loosen the shackles on Nathan and Tetherblood. He then uses himself as a distraction while the boys run away. After Blaquesmith is apparently gunned down, Umbridge orders that the boys be taken alive. The New Canaanites are too late, however, and Nathan and Tetherblood steal an escape pod. Their escape is made all the more speedy when the glowing org - now dubbed "Professor" - overrides the pod's systems and effects the escape. Nathan notes that Blaquesmith left an impression in his mind that they were to seek the last of the Askani.
