Which Green Lantern Has the Best Costume?

We look at all the outfits, from Alan Scott to Sodam Yat.

The costume, the costume, the costume… that’s what everybody’s going to talk about whenever a new superhero movie’s coming and GREEN LANTERN's no exception. Does the skin-tight-with-flesh-grooves all-CGI outfit look cool or silly? How about the seemingly painted-on mask? The debate has only begun so, to get some perspective, I figured I’d take a look at how the GLs' duds have evolved over the years...

 His outfit's just... so... groovy.
 His outfit's just... so... groovy.
Sticking to Hal Jordan would, of course, make for a pretty limited list since, barring some Parallax and Spectre tangents, he hasn't actually changed his outfit that much. I was actually pretty surprised to see how much the layout and color scheme of his movie outfit stuck to the tradition in comics. Anyway, without further preamble, let's stretch this fashion show cat walk back to the beginning... == TEASER ==

ALAN SCOTT

Martin Nodell’s original inspiration for this character drew partly from the classic story of Aladdin and that influence is obvious in the character’s (very) vaguely Arabesque outfit. For a character called the Green Lantern, there’s an awful lot more purple and red in this get-up. Honestly, I've always thought it was one of the more garish outfits from the Golden Age, and I think the Sentinel make-over went a long way to improve on it.

HAL JORDAN

This iconic outfit served as the basis for every GL who's followed, and it’s only been amended a little over the years. You’ll notice that the current version has tapered the green over the shoulders and cut the bottom portion to a point at the hips, making it look more like a jumpsuit than these earlier near-pajamas. I do agree with Reynolds' assessment that white valet gloves stick out kind of glaringly.

No Caption Provided

JOHN STEWART

His first costume was the same as Hal’s and his second was a really awkward design. The one that most people are aware of is from the JUSTICE LEAGUE cartoon (a look that ironically started with Kyle’s appearance in the SUPERMAN show.) The outfit subtly reflects Stewart’s military background and it also recalls the uniforms from STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION.  It's probably the most sensible of the bunch, but it maybe went overboard in downplaying the flair.

No Caption Provided

GUY GARDNER

Guy similarily wore the exact same outfit as Hal in his first appearance and it wasn’t until he showed up in JUSTICE LEAGUE that he got his own look. I always figured it was appropriate that this costume debuted in the 80s, because Guy was a jerk back then and this really makes you think of a frat boy wearing a letterman’s jacket. It’s probably better not to bring up the shirtless-with-wild-tattoos look he had while he was Warrior.

No Caption Provided

KYLE RAYNER

The manga influence on this is a lot more pronounced in hindsight than it was when I was reading JLA with Kyle as a member. This does look more like a spacesuit with armor, although I remember the “crab mask” was always the most controversial element for H.E.A.T. members. It does look a little clunky, now, although I still prefer this over the redesign.

No Caption Provided

SODAM YAT

I’m going to disregard the roid-raging-Mohawk-and-cape Yat we saw in his first appearance because the outfit he’s worn as the Ion is, in my opinion, one of the better looking modern costumes. Cobbling some elements from Kyle’s own days as the Ion, it’s basically a negative, color-reversed GL outfit that looks like a surfing suit in the best way. That is, it's practical while still having enough larger-than-life flash for you to buy that this is the ultimate GL.

No Caption Provided

JADE

Even though she was born with some innate powers, she’s worth involving here as an unofficial Green Lantern. However, like the Wasp, she’s one of those characters whose had so many outfits over the years, that it’s hard to really pin down a definitive one. She’s yet to find one that really sticks and I suppose there’s reason for that, as a lot of them haven’t had a great design focus (and some of them are pretty skeevy.)

Which Green Lantern do you think has had the spiffiest costume? What costumes have we missed that should be included here?

Not only does it help him stand out from the rest but it perfectly suits his character, hes not going to wear some geeky mask  or a dorky skintight adult onesie!

i always loved Kyle Rayner's original costume.  Was very obviously Green Lantern, but was different and separate than the standard Corps costume, fit Rayner and the current state of the GLC very well.

It's an article. Doesn't count. "

o_O  Soooo, lemme get this straight then.  Members put content on CV for free, and CV leaves that content open for all to use, but staff - who get paid for their time and contributions - can repackage that content as their own articles, to justify their paychecks...and members are encouraged to pay for enhanced memberships...so...that...they...can see someone get paid... to repeat their own content back to them?

Is...that...right?  ...I must've gotten something wrong there. 8^/

I think, and always have thought, that Kyle's original costume is the best.  The Corps all have pretty similar uniforms but his is so...non-standard.  It really makes him unique and stand out.  And I like his mask, I don't think it looks bad at all.

gotta say each lanterns costume is just fine for them   kind of the thing with a lantern...pretty much conscripted into a universe police force but you can wear your own costume    each is cool in their own way and suits themselves just fine....

I'm going with Kyle's first one. Although he has had a lot of good ones my favorite is still his first one. I just really like the crab mask. It is the more practical mask for hiding ones true identity.

Hal Jordan is my favourite Green Lantern out of the 4 majors (Jordan, Raynor, Stewart and Gardner). But the best costume is probably Alan Scott, because it's so different from the other Lanterns.

I always liked John's because it not only was simple but also expressed what he did without him having to say it. He is the one light in the darkness. The green beam that cuts through evil. Or at least that's how I see it.

That's a toughy. I don't like Kyle's first one, honestly, but when he reformed into a more classical look, it was a bit better. Still, Sodam Yat as Ion probably takes the cake.

Hal Jordan's is definitely the most classic, but I prefer John Stewart and Kyle Rayner's outfits much better. They're more modern and, in Rayner's case, very unique, something that's hard to come by for big heroes. I mean think about it: how many people are running around with a bat, a spider, a bolt of lightning, an X, an S or some other random letter? There aren't a lot of good costumes that pay tribute to the original cheese without ripping it off entirely. Kyle's does a very good job of that.

" @cbishop: really the post that all of you are complaining about is two years old and has not been commented on in over a year, Tom brought it back to life, besides it is relavent to the upcoming movie. "

<sigh> That's not the point.  If a member had posted this in the forums, it would have been locked, because the two year old thread already exists.  Staff get to repost forum topics as front page articles, and pass it off as "it's on the news page."  That's cheesy, and it's a double standard.  Why not bump the old thread to the front page, if it's now relevant to something?  Give members the thrill of having something on the front page, instead of paying someone to do it again.   At the very least, acknowledge the member's thread in the article - especially once it's pointed out in the comments.

Right after this article, Tom posted an article about "Who's the best Robin" - something that appears at least eleven times in the forums (I know, because I posted the links in the comments).  G-Man posted an article the same week about "what are you thankful for," for Thanksgiving, and someone pointed out they had already posted it to the forums.  G-Man literally answered it with "Yeah, but I did it on the NEWS page."  IMO, that's crud.

My issue is really twofold with this:
1) Tom's original articles are much better than this one and the "best Robin" article.  My personal opinion is that he can do better than to stripmine the forums.

2) Members have been asked to pay for their memberships, so that the CV staff can get paid, and continue to do the jobs that we love for them to do.  That's great - nothing wrong with it  - people and bills have to be paid.  Thankfully, they've left the option open of continuing in a free membership.  That's great for me, because I don't have fun money in my budget right now (thank goodness for someone else allowing me to use their 'Net access).  Still, I'm onsite, looking around, and trying to figure out if a paid membership is something I want, when I do have fun money.  So far, the only advantage to paid membership that I've seen is getting the podcast a day earlier than free members get to see it - a podcast I have no interest in, either way.  If the rest of what's being offered is rehashed forum topics, why do I want to pay for a membership, when I can see it on the forums for free?  Sell more ads - I'll deal.

Okay, there's also a third thing:
3) For a site full of fans-turned-staff - a self-professed "fan site" - they are flirting with a very dangerous subject, by rehashing someone else's forum topic and blowing off the objections to that usage - plagiarism and intellectual property theft.  Please note that I said "flirting with" and not that they are actually doing this - I can see that this is not their intent, but not everybody will choose to see it that way, as the site goes on.

Comic Vine staff are gaining a professional image on the Web and in the comic community - they are interviewing creators and executives, getting previews to yet-to-be-published materials, and have been credited with at least one set of creators getting together to create their own comic.  As time goes on, if complaints about rehashing forum topics continue to crop up, and continue to be blown off, that's going to get out to the comic community too, and their professional image is going to be called into question.  How many future pros are already members on Comic Vine, that will carry knowledge of these objections into their careers?

As a published comic author, Tom is especially at risk - what if his next project happens to look like something started on CV by someone else?  How many pros or fans will believe it was coincidence, if it's known that he routinely rehashes others' material on Comic Vine, for the news page?  Whether he actually went and looked up topics and reused them, or genuinely, coincidentally came up with it himself, won't matter at that point - that's a stain on the reputation that cannot be undone.

Please note that I'm "what if-ing" here - as far as I know, no user content has been intentionally "stolen" by anyone on staff.  I just think it's flirting with he gray area around that, to rehash these topics.  This is why it's so hard for a writer to break into the industry - comic companies are hesitant to review writing submissions, because "what if something similar appears in our comics later?"  They'd rather avoid the trouble altogether - that's why they prefer you be a pro writer in another field, or self-published, so they have something to review.  Comic Vine's wide open, and has been made that way on purpose, to facilitate the shared info nature of the site, but as such, they have to hold themselves to a higher standard of professionalism, so that members can feel free to share on this site, without fear of their contributions being snatched up and claimed by someone else.   "Higher standard" means they don't snatch up and claim anything as their own that already exists onsite - a standard that they hold the members to already.

In other words, it's simply in their best interest to not rehash forum topics, or to at least acknowledge the pre-existing topics, if they are going to repeat them.
