Venom, Captain Britain and Hawkeye Join Rick Remender's SECRET AVENGERS

Rick Remender shakes up the SECRET AVENGERS roster and reveals plans for the book.

On the final page of Rick Remender's Uncanny X-Force #19 we saw the giant image of Captain Britain -- and in our very first look at Remender's next big project at Marvel, SECRET AVENGERS, we see more of Britain's very own superhero in action. But wait, that's not all.

In a recent Marvel Live Blog writer Rick Remender and artist Gabriel Hardman discussed their work on SECRET AVENGERS, which Remender is set to take over beginning with issue #21.1. The new creative team also means a shift to the current roster. Remender recently revealed plans to bring Venom, Hawkeye and Captain Britain onto the team.

Much like what we saw in UNCANNY X-FORCE, Remender will be planting the seeds of story and mystery early on in his upcoming book. Remender's first dive into the series will be through issue #21.1 where the writer will re-establish relationships between Avengers characters like Hawkeye and Captain America. In this issue, Remender will begin by setting up the Masters of Evil with their very own "sovereign nation," meaning that this group of bad-guys will be getting their very own country to operate -- likely in the style of Doctor Doom's Latveria.

"One of the important things for me with big super hero stuff is seeding things early on. Setting up long term mysteries...It's hard to re-establish relationships between characters like Cap and Hawkeye who you as a fan have known for so long, but that's what I tried to do for new readers in the Point One issue...In Clint's eyes, he's the direct approach kind of guy, he doesn't like spy work, but Cap thinks this fits his skill set. An archer or a sniper needs to be covert and deadly. Cap's only concern is Clint's temper, so the Point One issue is a test.

Some of what Rick Remender has been building in his UNCANNY X-FORCE series will cross over into his SECRET AVENGERS story line, as well. The character "the Father," a name UNCANNY X-FORCE readers might recognize, was responsible for helping to create the descendants of all the robots in the Marvel Universe. According to Remender, the Father poses a great threat and it is something that will be revealed over time.

"Every cool robot in the Marvel Universe has a Descendant and they're all working together. It's something that will be problematic for a lot of people moving forward. This can't be swept under the rug. These are sentient beings. It will cause a dilemma...The big thing that came to me was that bonding with technology is a natural part of humanity's evolution. There is a way to make that slightly villainous. You have an entire species of Sentinaughts who have a built-in hatred of mutants. The X-Men may not want to be buddies with them. I always wondered why the Reavers hated mutants. Their connection with Father explains a lot of that. He needed storm troopers to protect his new race from a competing species."

Remender's experience on VENOM will certainly come in handy as both he, Hawkeye, and Captain Britain will all be joining the team. According to Remender, Venom might be the "odd man out" -- at least at first. The writer likened Venom's character to a kid who grows up loving music and goes on to work with Madonna.

The writer also discussed that Venom's joining of the Secret Avengers won't be something to come out of left field. Venom's 'Circle of Four' story arc launching in his self-titled series next month will "lead into Venom's role in the Secret Avengers," and, in a way, it will tie the two series together.

As for what's next? Be on the lookout for War Machine who is set to make an appearance in the upcoming arc thanks to the events that will be taking place in AVENGERS VS X-MEN. What do you think of the new additions to the Secret Avengers roster? Are you looking forward to Remender's takeover of the series?
