Venom and Sinister Six Movies Announced

Movie Spider-Man's life is about to get way more difficult. Good thing he has great power, right?

Sony's execs previously hinted they want to create spinoff films and today, they made it official: they're moving forward with at least two spinoff projects. The first has been teased a gazillion times now: the Sinister Six. Not only have they dropped the name before (one of Marc Webb's photos had it plastered on a wall), but they've been building Peter's rogue gallery and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is adding plenty of new characters. If you have a keen eye, then you know Venom also exists in this universe (Harry's display in the trailer said "Venom storage").

No Caption Provided

Drew Goddard, Alex Kurtzman, Robert Orci, Jeff Pinker, and Ed Solomon will "collaborate on overseeing the developing story over several films." They'll work with producers Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad and director Marc Webb. Kurtzman, Solomon and Orci are tasked with writing Venom's movie and Kurtzman will direct. Meanwhile, Goddard is confirmed to write the Sinister Six movie and maybe direct. The press release says the five writers, two producers and Webb have created a "franchise brain trust" to make sure the universe keeps a continuous tone as it expands.

Based on what we've seen in the cinematic universe so far, who would you want on the Sinister Six's roster and why? Seeing as Venom is at Oscorp, it could be inspired by the Ultimate version of the symbiote. Are you excited or what, Viners?

See this is why characters are appearing/teased in ASM 2, it's not to make it "over-crowded" they are just intro's for there own films

and i freaking love it, cant wait to see a full fledged movie on the Sinister Six. Venom...meh not so much

@mr_athrilla: Dude, GL was terrible and only X3 was bad. The two before were pretty good.

Oh this must be embarrassing for you finding out this way, but let me clue you in. Not everybody is a Wolverine fan. Some people like me, like other members of the X-men, and those people got screwed. You can't honestly believe fans of Wolverine left the movie theater, just as happy as fans of Cyclops, Iceman, Rogue and Storm.

That's why I like the Avengers movie. Iron Man was the clear star, but everybody got their time to shine. They got ample screen time, and they were in character. 2 simple things That Bryan Singer has failed to do

Here's what I'm guessing: we get Rhino, Electro, and Goblin for ASM2 and Ock, Vulture, and Venom for ASM3, and this could possibly be the Sinister Six roster (unless Venom is swapped out for someone like Shocker).

Looks like Disney won't get their hand on Spider-Man anytime soon. :-/ Oh well. I am definitely looking forward to what Sony is bringing on the table for the movies in the future. I'm more interesting in Venom. Hope it's good! :)

"Venom storage". This adds to my "OsCorp has had the symbiote since FDR" theory. I just hope he's portrayed better than last time.

I don't see how this would work with sony only owning the spiderman franchise, maybe if they owned some more marvel characters I could see it.

@jonny_anonymous: If they hint at them that much in the first trailer, they're probably going to have some kind of role. Rhino, Electro, and Green Goblin are already more than enough for a sequel, but if Doc Ock, Vulture, and Venom are added, it's going to be more disorienting than Spider-Man 3.

It doesn't mean a thing other than they will end up in future films.

i actually wouldnt mind a kingpin spinoff movie sometime in the future. they could introduce someone like a tombstone but my only question is would they be more daredevil villains or would they be the villains for multiple charachters like a spider-man?

They are banking a lot of value on a film that severely underperformed at the box office. Sony is going to end up running spider-man into the ground if they are not careful.

Marvel did the same with the first Iron Man movie and WB/DC is also banked a lot of vale on Man of Steel. Both of these movies grossed less at the world wide box office then The Amazing Spider-man.

I would love an agent venom movie but I would think they would have to wait a while or age Flash so that he has graduated High School and moved onto the military. Personally, I think Flash should have at least a few years of military experience. I doubt Agent Venom will happen before Eddie Brock Venom, but I would not be surprised if it does.

Considering Flash Thompson's portrayals in ASM 1, I see an Agent Venom movie in the future.

I endorse this idea.

Pretty much the best part of this new Amazing Spider-Man franchise is Andrew Garfield so not sure if not including him is smart. Would the Sinister 6 movie have them targeting Spider-Man or what? Really having trouble seeing how a movie based on the Sinister 6 would work. Venom...great idea but how to make it work, introduce in this new series of Spidey movies, make a Spider-Man rip-off franchise so no big names need paid I just love comic book movies and have a feeling they've bitten off more than they can chew and they haven't even gotten to the dinner table.

garfield is only contracted for ams 1 - 3. he gave an interview saying he wasnt signed for 4

So wait people are complaining that ASM2 will have too many characters just like Superman vs Batman yet The Avengers: Age of Ultron has got more characters than both of those? What an illogical world we live in.

@mr_athrilla: Do you wanna talk about the Green Lantern movie?

not really. The fans did right by Green Lantern. They felt that It was an awful movie with a weak interpretation of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps. Because they voiced their opinions, we never got a sequel. The X-men trilogy has the same problems as the GL.(terrible incarnations of their comic book counterparts (except for Magneto, Proff X and Wolverine)) but for some reason it's regarded as a masterpiece.

Personally I think If GL was released 10 years ago, before or along side the first X-men movie it wouldn't have nearly as much haters. Because back then they were no other superhero movies to compare it to.

I think the only way they could make a good venom movie would be if either A: It would be about agent venom, which is highly unlikely as he is currently more popular as a villain, or B: Spider-Man was in it and was about the 40% focus of the movie. Otherwise I'd say this is relatively good news, but it seems to me that they're writing a whole bunch of checks that they have currently have no idea how to cash, seeing as the amazing spider-man 2 trailer looked very generic and overall, not very good if you ask me. I don't care if they're setting the characters up for their own movies, overstuffed is overstuffed, and a bad movie is a bad movie.

Seeing what they've done to the Green Goblin and Electro in the new movie, there's no reason to be excited for a Sinister Six movie. Green Goblin and Electro look totally different, and while the original costumes from the comics probably look hokey to the majority of mainstream movie goers, that's what they look like to any of us who have been reading the comics for years. Why bother using these characters if they're going to change them so drastically?

And in defense of the new costumes in AS2, the film universe draws about as much from the Ultimate Universe as it is to the 616. Actually, this Electro looks pretty spot on the the Electro from USMs first Kingpin arc. And even though I love electros goofy, OG lightning bolt mask, there is no way that was going to end up in a film. He doesn't even wear the mask in the mainstream universe anymore. And we still don't know if Green Goblin is going to get a mask yet. And like another poster said, it's not just their costumes that make the characters.

@captain13: girls don't just watch films for good looking actors you know

Yes, girls love comic book villains they have never heard of played by actors who they probably don't recognize. So let's throw a bunch of money at this, potentially hurting the industry.

And I'm not just talking about girls. Why was Shailene Woodly cut from ASM2 again? Whining fanboys who didn't think she was pretty enough.

Throw out whatever counter argument you want. I'm going to laugh when a $160 million - $200 million Sinister Six bombs on opening weekend.

Had nothing to do with that actually. Rumor is Gwen is going to die (she is wearing her famous green+purple outfit). They pushed Woodly out of the film because they didn't want to make light of that moment by having Peter go on another date with a chick so soon. Her scenes in the film was pretty much just that anyway.

Hope they dont f**k up Venom. Take the safe route and do Agent Venom. Eddie could barely hold his own series. Flash has been with us for two years and has been on multiple teams, story arcs, longest running series. Better origin story aswell.

Sony is really starting to worry me. Not only does a solo movie starring the Sinister Six make no sense (unless they go the superior foes route), but the idea that they are adding in non-plot important cameos of villains into the main Spider-Man movies just to advertise this offshoot really bothers me. Venom makes more sense in a solo film I guess, if they do the Flash Thompson version. But the bottom line here for me is, I really don't know if the Spider-Man universe is deep enough to justify a larger universe in of itself in the same way Avengers or the X-Men can.

I was disappointed with the trailer to Amazing 2, but I was very much still keeping an open mind. This peek into the heads of the people in charge has made me lose a lot of that tentative faith. I think I just officially jumped into the camp waiting on the rights to return to Marvel Studios.

@thomaselliot: how does the names Ortiz and Kurtzman give you hope for a "serious" tone of Spider-man? They watch terrible blockbuster fluff centered around setpieces and workbackwards from there not coming at it from character to setpiece, so ya know we care about what's going on. They do't do serious they do pretintious blockbuster camp.

Drew Goddard gives me hope for Sinister Six though.

"Drew Goddard, Alex Kurtzman, Robert Orci"

Oh what? Those names just totally changed my opinion about everything Spider-man.

I had no idea Kurtzman and Orci were the screenwriters on Spider-Man 2.

I mean, not everything they do is gold, but their names are trustworthy enough to give Spider-man films a more serious look. Hmmm.....

@daltonmunnal: Take the radical re-design of The Creeper, example. Even if he was still Jack Ryder and worked for WHAM-TV, the new costume is simply horrible and makes it impossible for me to even TRY reading anything with him in it. The costume may not be the defining factor of a character, but in a visual medium like comics, there's a reason why one costume works better than another.
