This Week's Essential Comics: 10/13/14

These are the comics you're looking for.

New York Comic-Con has come and gone and you can bet we're wiped out. But there's new comics on the horizon, and we're not going to let a little exhaustion get in the way of making sure you're ready for Wednesday's flood of new issues. As always, we've looked over the latest list of new releases and each writer has highlighted some of the comics they're looking forward to reading the most. We'll tell you why we're hoping for the best and, if possible, we'll attach the preview as well. Once you're all set seeing what we're excited to read, take a trip to the comments section and tell the world which comics you're going to read first. You just may motivate someone else to give it a read. Go on, support what you love!

DEADLY CLASS #8

No Caption Provided

For seven issues we’ve been reading the crazy adventures of Marcus Lopez as he’s found his way to King’s Dominion High School for the Deadly Arts. We’ve caught glimpses of some darkness to his past. There’s been a deadly lurking figure that has made his move against Marcus and his friends as well as a deep level of guilt Marcus is apparently carrying. This issue gives us some answers to what the heck is going on.

Rick Remender and Wes Craig tone down the immediate action to deliver some character development. Marcus' story isn't quite what you'd expect. I look forward to this issue each month.

BATWOMAN #35

No Caption Provided

At New York Comic Con I got the chance to read this issue. After the big cliffhanger in issue 34 and the FUTURES END one-shot, we’ve been left wondering how Kate’s fate would be dealt with. This issue catches you off guard by the new storyline. Simply put, we see Batwoman in space and she’s leading a team consisting of some unexpected characters. It’s pretty crazy. And it’s good.

Georges Jeanty takes over the art duties and along with Guy Major’s colors, it’s such a treat.

Check out our interview with Marc Andreyko.

UNCANNY X-MEN #27

No Caption Provided

Chris Bachalo is back and Brian Michael Bendis is going to explore more of the complexity of Cyclops’ character. Since AVENGERS VS X-MEN, we’ve seen him go through some big changes and he’s been dealing with quite a bit. The recent reading of Charles Xavier’s last will and testament has also put a strain on him. With his powers acting up and a big threat to deal with, we can bet things are going to be pretty exciting.

Honorable Mention: JUSTICE LEAGUE #35

GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS #35

No Caption Provided

Godhead has been insanely rad so far. Mixing the New Gods and the members of different lantern corps is nothing short of a genius idea. The New Gods are looking for a white lantern, and there's only one: Kyle Rayner, so this issue is super-duper-essential if you're enjoying the story so far, you need this. Sure, the lantern books cross-over a TON, but conceptually, this is one that not only makes a ton of sense, but works amazingly well as a cross-over. Go get this!

THE SUPERIOR FOES OF SPIDER-MAN #16

The solicit says "STILL NOT still not canceled!" I am sad because this is the second to last issue of the series.... ONE OF MY FAVORITE SERIES! As the tears roll down my face and I wipe them away, I remember that I still have two more issues of awesomeness to read. Why is this essential? Why are you asking me that question? It's rad, but that should be common knowledge. Are you still reading this? You should be buying it already!

BATMAN AND ROBIN #35

No Caption Provided

Batman's about to go all Liam Neeson on Darkseid's world. You can't just take the Dark Knight's only child and think you can get away with it. Robin Rises had an opening that was full of fun action and it looks like this next chapter is going to have even more of it. But instead of having a slugfest with Ra's al Ghul in the snow, Batman's stepped into what could possibly turn out to be one of his most formidable armors yet. Only time shall tell what it's capable of and the craziness that'll occur, but I'm thrilled to see all of the ridiculous stuff that Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason will make Wayne unleash. Batman's pissed off and he's heading to war. How could you not be curious and want to see what ensues?

DEATH OF WOLVERINE #4

No Caption Provided

The big moment is finally here: Wolverine's going to die (or at least that's what's heavily implied over and over again). It's a moment many of us were dreading way back back when it was initially announced -- especially since 3 Months To Die was so disappointing -- but Charles Soule and Steve McNiven have been doing some awesome work with Logan. DEATH OF WOLVERINE has been a story that simply gets the character and gives us everything there is to love about him. They're not going heavy-handed with his vulnerability and they're not delivering any unoriginal moments of drooling rage. They understand the iconic character and it really shows in the 3 previous chapters. Here's hoping Wolverine's demise is every bit as badass and emotional as it deserves to be. Considering Soule and McNiven's 3 other issues, I have nothing but faith in what'll come next. It's time for you to get some rest, Logan. You've definitely earned it. Just don't get too cozy because you'll probably be back in a few years.

Preview is via CBR.

TMNT #39

Look at that cover. Seriously, move your focus to the right and look at it. Now, if you're a TMNT fan, there's a roughly 900% chance that cover has filled you with joy and makes you want to get your hands on the issue this very second. IDW's TMNT has been consistently spectacular and this plot has me completely immersed. It does such a great job balancing character, drama, and pure fun. The lively and impressive artwork doesn't hurt, either. IDW's produced a lot of story arcs that will undoubtedly go down as some of the best TMNT stories to check out, and this latest one is looking like it'll be yet another storyline you can add to that list. Ninja Turtles fans, you need to be reading this book.

Honorable Mention: DEADPOOL'S ART OF WAR #1

MANIFEST DESTINY #11

No Caption Provided

We're winding down the second arc of one of the most intriguing titles I've encountered in years and last issue was a real return to form on what I like most about it: exploration and experimentation on the wild fauna of the New World. Not just dissection/autopsy this time either, but experimentation and tests of hypotheses as well as the implementation of results. Chris Dingess has crafted a story that looks amazing on paper and works even better in practice as bringing a scientific bend to the fantastical world. And of course Matthew Roberts' art is a huge part of the establishment of this world and I can't wait to see what further horrors he unleashes.

NEW AVENGERS #25

No Caption Provided

Time continues running out, as it so often does, and the Illuminati find themselves not only down one member, but facing a potential threat unlike any ever known in the Marvel Universe. And if that sounds like hyperbolic event talk: this is not an AXIS tie-in and it's been one of the most consistently epic and entertaining books on the shelf for 24 issues. Jonathan Hickman has taken Namor in some absolutely fascinating directions and even roped in my personal favorite: Doctor Doom as a massive x-factor. I'm excited to see where this title's going and I can't wait to see what visuals Kev Walker brings back to the table. In terms of emotional punch, he's always able to deliver.

MILES MORALES: THE ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #6

No Caption Provided

The solicitation sums this one up well: Miles Morales' life has been turned upside down on every conceivable level. Free from the sometimes crushing shackles of a status quo or movie expectations, I have no idea where this storyline is going or how this arc will conclude. Brian Bendis has a mixed record when it comes to ending even the best of storylines across his career, but on ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN, particularly since Miles took over, he's been doing fantastically. David Marquez's art has been a monthly highlight since taking over this title, and I am excited to see what he brings to the table this month.

Honorable Mention: EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE #5
