The Walking Dead 3.08 'Made to Suffer' Discussion

Michonne versus The Governor. Take your bets.

It’s about damn time. That’s all I have to say about Tyreese finally making his appearance in the AMC The Walking Dead universe. Sure, the context is completely different, but since he was one of my favorite characters in the original comics, I’m just glad to finally have him around – played by Chad Coleman of The Wire fame no less. However, the “Highlander” rule for black folks on The Walking Dead is getting a little ridiculous.

While the introduction of Tyreese ranks as one of my favorite moments from this week’s episode, it definitely wasn’t the week’s biggest moment. And for the mid-season finale, “Made to Suffer” delivered quite a few great bits. Firstly, we finally get the first major confrontation between the survivors of the prison and those of Woodbury. More specifically, we get to see just how the Governor winds up with that eye-patch of his.

No Caption Provided

The overall fight between Michonne and the Governor was quite a brutal affair. Not only did Michonne stab a large piece of glass through the Governor’s eye, but she also shoved a sword right through his zombie daughter’s head. Michonne was clearly not playing around. But I will say, once Andrea walks into the room to end the fight, I’m surprised she took the fish tank zombie heads so well. She didn’t even seem all that phased. Girl has some issues if you ask me.

Additionally, we get to see Glenn and Maggie go berzerker style, using some rather gruesome methods to get themselves out of confinement. The one thing I can’t explain, though, is why Maggie hesitated to shoot Merle. The dude kidnapped you, tortured your boyfriend and now has a giant knife to his throat. It’s not like he would have been the first life you’ve taken; just two seconds ago you had no problem shoving a human wrist bone through some dude’s throat. Take the shot! But alas, that’s entertainment for you some times.

There were a few other nitpicks I have with the episode. Like when did Daryl get captured? Also, the cliffhanger was not nearly as strong as the mid-season finale to season two. But those are relatively minor gripes for an otherwise good episode. It was also cool to see Carl taking charge and continuing to become more mature even though he’s only like nine years old.

Overall, “Made to Suffer” was a solid hour of television, even if there were a few flaws in logic. So, what did you guys think of the season 3 mid-season finale? Sound off below.

This show sucks SO BAD. This watered down pg-13 version of the comic is unwatchable. Anyone who thinks this show is awesome 1) needs their head examined or 2) has never read the comic. Seriously, if you like this show, stop watching, go to a comic shop and buy the first couple trades. You will never watch this pile of crap show again.

Watered down pg -13?boy you gone lost your mind.I've read the comics and I like the TV show.yeah there's aspects of it that are different.but its better for the tv show to be different then page for page the exact same damn thing.wouldn't be a point in a tv show then you would of been better off making a movie.keeping similar theme but different direction allows them to try stuff that maybe Kirkman maybe wanted to do or change something he feels he shouldn't have.your entitled to not like the direction but not everyone that has read the comics feel the same way

Daryl better not die. Can Andrea be anymore stupid?

It's obvious that Daryl and Merle live when it shows the preview for the next half season.

Hey! Welcome to Comic Vine! I see you created this account today just to be antagonistic. If I'm wrong, how much did you watch before deciding you didn't like it? Personally, though I've decided to stop watching, I'll probably have that constant itch to, because I -want- it to be good. Maybe I can put it out of my mind by the time February rolls around.

@Renchamp: Ah, but see, you came at it the other way around. (I read your reviews of the comic.) Since you started with the show, you didn't have any hang-ups like I did. Makes me wonder how you thought about things in the books in relation to the what you'd already seen. Are you all caught up to the current issue?

You're absolutely right in regards to Two and a Half Men, by the way :)

How about you? Comic or show first?

I agree they shouldn't follow the comic book page for page. That's one of the reasons I am so impressed with Lori's death on the show. They did an outstanding job on that, and it falls in with the 'correct' timeline. It 'fits' for me. Things like Tyreese just coming in now, when he should be about to head out, mess it up too much for me. For something that's supposed to be the same thing, they're just too different. That's why I referred to the show as being like a parallel universe. They could do more episodes like "Vatos," and add to the world, flesh it out more. Instead, they play the shell game with characters, and fluff it up with extraneous zombie encounters.

*shrugs* Sorry. I've stayed too long, and the show just annoys me now. It makes me grumpy :(

I wonder if they'll kill Daryl. He is very well liked by the viewers and the show isn't like the comics where popular characters get killed every few issues. Somehow I see Andrea intervening and helping Daryl escape, but maybe I'm just optimistic.

Great episode, but I would like to see exactly how Daryl got captured. And I wonder how big of a factor Rick's sanity will be moving forward. Great seeing Kirkman explain the scene with Shane on Talking Dead

Comic first.Looking at it as a time line is kinda the same as comparing the two which you probably shouldn't do for your own sanitys sake lol.its just gonna be different.I'm also not completely happy with everything like dales end,how andrea is being portrayed currently.and that Michonne is acting like she learned the way of the samurai.when most shes supposed knows is college level fencing.but gripes aside i still enjoy the show alot and look forward to see what direction they go in next.T.V show put more people onto walking dead and even got a good tell tale game out of it.I'd say just try to judge the show on the story their trying to tell and not what the comic has already told.

@strangeling: I didn't do anything to be antagonistic. I have a negative opinion of the show and don't get how people, especially those who have read the comic, like it. Same as you. I have watched every episode of this pile of crap show right up to the last couple. I couldn't take it anymore and deleted the recording from my DVR.

For those who say it isn't watered down and pg-13 I say I disagree. The governor has been toned WAAAAAY down from the comic. They replace the truly graphic and horrifying violence human survivors perpetrate on each other with splashy zombie kill shots and think that makes up for it. I really wanted this show to be good but it is not. Deal with it. If you want a zombie based soap opera this show is for you. If you want THE WALKING DEAD you should read the comic.

Dude chill, it's different from the comics to keep people like you on your toes. Also it's on television .. you think they could show ANY of the comic book Gov on tv?! If you think they can put that on tv then YOU need your head examined. Yes the book is way more brutal and show alot more details of the characters struggles to survive but that doesn't make the show bad. Either get over the differences and enjoy the show or move on and ignore the show. Make yourself happy :)

Listen you dumb whore. good god. My rage has built once again at her.

Also, Good job Carl.

Who cares that one black person has to die for another one to be introduced? There at least four black characters on the show. That's more than the Hispanic, Arab, Asian, and Jew characters combined. All I care is having the show continue to be solid.

One complaint I have, is they haven't really made the Governor the almighty hate-able sunnuvagun he was in the comics ... I mean, I'm not overly yearning to see him get what's coming to him yet, no where near where I was when reading the books ... are you?

I absolutely loved the episode. I love that Tyreese is finally in the show, and that Morrissey is finally starting to take shape of the comic's Governor. I actually kind of felt bad for Blake once that great, intense battle was over. Here's hoping that Darryl and Merle survive, I enjoy both of 'em.
