The List: Recent Marvel Cancelations

With so many Marvel titles getting the axe, is this it or will there be more?

Over the course of the last several weeks, you may have heard about the cancelation of several Marvel titles. This week took the cake though, as Marvel canceled various titles that were somewhat popular with Marvel readers -- among them is X-23, Daken: Dark Wolverine and PunisherMAX. So how many titles are ending?

DAKEN: DARK WOLVERINE #21
DAKEN: DARK WOLVERINE #21

We'll start with X-23. Marvel recently canceled the series which happened to be their only female character self titled series. The series will be ending with issue #20. But wait, that's not all. Earlier today Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso revealed that Daken: Dark Wolverine would also be coming to an end, and that the final story arc will begin with issue #21, launching in February. According to the solicit, issue #21 is "the story the series has been leading up to" where Daken will set out to enact revenge upon "the man he hates most in the world," Wolverine.

BLACK PANTHER: THE MOST DANGEROUS MAN ALIVE #529
BLACK PANTHER: THE MOST DANGEROUS MAN ALIVE #529

The recently relaunched GHOST RIDER title, which temporarily had a female lead character has also been canceled. The series will, apparently, come to an abrupt end. The series' writer, Rob Williams confirmed the news via Twitter.Joining the ranks of these three books is the cancelation of BLACK PANTHER: THE MOST DANGEROUS MAN ALIVE which will end with issue #529. According to the book's solicit, this will be the series' finale and will feature Kingpin vs. T'Challa. The book will also feature Typhoid Mary, Lady Bullseye, Falcon and Luke Cage. The solicit also states that the issue will "change the status quo," implying that there is a chance that the book or the character will return. We recently reported that Marvel canceled both the DESTROYERS, VICTOR VON DOOM as well as ALL WINNERS SQUAD which will come to an abrupt end and will go from an 8-issue miniseries, to a 5-issue series.

We reported yesterday that PUNISHER MAX will be coming to an end, but won't be canceled. Other Marvel titles that we won't be seeing anymore include IRON MAN 2.0 and ALPHA FLIGHT.

Marvel's Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso spoke about the cancelations and end to many of the Marvel titles, and expressed that while it's sad for fans; it's also sad for the writers, artists and editors of the respective books.

It's always disappointing when a title comes to an end...I guarantee you that as frustrated as a fan might be, there's a writer, artist and an editor who are even more disappointed. That's just the way things go sometimes. The market won't support it.
That said, I'm proud of X-23's run. Two successful limited series and an ongoing series ain't bad. Ditto for Daken [who is also ending his series.] From a supporting role in "Wolverine: Origins” to the lead of ongoing series that included him slicing Frank Castle to bits -- enter Franken-Castle. Both were characters that gained traction in a market that, well, doesn't really have a great track record of supporting new stuff. And both characters anchored legitimate monthly titles. We don't do R&D at Marvel. We'll stick by a title for a while -- like we did with "Spider-Girl" -- but there comes a point where that title has to earn, usually sooner than later.

Maybe it really did just come down to sales. What do you think of the news? Are any of these one of your favorite titles? Hopefully we won't have to see any more Marvel books get the axe (that's a lot of books in one week!) but we will have to wait and see. That still leaves us wondering; why so many cancelations? Why the end of so many titles? Is it all about money, or is something big going to go down at Marvel starting in February, 2012?

Daken cancelled? Screw you marvel I'm done....I'm tired of everything being turned into money and no longer about the craft. Once upon a time a character mattered, now if said character doesn't have books flying off the shelves they get cancelled faster than a fox television show regardless of how much potential is thee...I love Wolverine but some of marvel cash cows are taking all of the spot light, can we fall in love with other characters or are we only allowed to like the money makers? I'm tired of Marvel, it isn't even creating entertaining ideals anymore, it's just killing off good characters and cancelling good books. I'm returning back to my roots full time, DC COMICS!

I cant believe this I love X23 and Daken I just cant fathom why they'd cancel her , and Daken , am also a huge fan of ,but i can to an extent understand why the sales dropped, ever since Rob Williams decided to take over daken has gone down hill ,turning daken into a monologueing, solipsistic, crippled druggy(well ex druggy but still) Rob ruined Daken he molded Daken into a completely unappealing character, i was afraid that would happen when he took over, and evidently hes had the same effect on Ghost rider who im a die hard fan for as well, im so upset i wanted to see Daken go further im very disappointed, the same goes for the other titles as well my heart goes out to those too i just wish there was something to do about it im sure those who are reading this feel the same :(

Not that I want to see it cancelled but are all of these books getting axed while Moon Knight survives? How much longer do you think Hulk (Red Hulk) will keep goin?

My insinct tells me that marvel's probably got a "big event" planed, which'll reuire them opening up their book ranks, and so meaning that space had to be made. Butif it turns out that it isnt then i have no idea why their cancelling so many titles around the same time. It only hurts marvel and the readership if they decide to cancell a title now due to poor sales, only to start it up again in a years time with a new #1 due to fan request. Plus cancelling without announcing what books will take their place is kinda dumb.

Sad to hear Ghost Rider is being cancelled. I'm not surprised though. I'm a big fan of GR but with the new female lead I wasn't very impressed. Would of picked it up again if Blaze or Ketch had gotten back in the saddle though. X-23 is a shame too. I admit I didn't pick up any of these titles but would have liked to see her and Daken get time to progress and become more though.

Most of these books are ones that I didn't have much interest in anyway. I had thought about picking up Daken though. So I guess the good news for me is that there will probablly only be a couple of trades to to collect Daken's series.

Although I agree about the title you should actually point your(middle) finger towards Disney.

It's not a coincidence anymore, they've started new comics back in June right before Marvels lay offs.

WHAT!?!?! I love Black Panther the character, but the writing of that title and plot wad just STUPID!!! Marvel wanted to sink that title AND the character. Who the hell wanted Black Panther in Hell's Kitchen after DOOMWAR??? And why doesn't he ever interact with Daredevil, they don't need two heros in little @ss HK.

Wow, I'm shocked. Canceling x-23 is sad, but not unbeleiveble. She's had a great run, the art as well as story was great but it just isn't going anywhere. Daken though? I thought that it would be a cemented title for at least another year. he still owns madripoor, and now apparently he's going back to Osborn for Dark Avengers and he's just a wild guy, surprising to see them take that turn. Punisher max, I assumed that wasn't going to be everlasting but to cancel it before may is just greedy sales issues.

So sad, the need a memorial :P

@TheMadMonkey:

Trades are there bread and butter sorry, just the truth. Unfortunately more people pick up the trades then the single issues, and that's not going to ever change, especially with the digital market increasing more and more everyday. Most people don't have the money to go out and spend 3.99 on 24 pages of work, that's just the truth. So they are going to go out and get what they know, and are less likely to take a gamble on something new. It has nothing to do with trades, it all has to do with price and marketing. Marvel needs to introduce a lower price point, stop with all the gimmicks, and then maybe they will see an increase in sales. Until then though, you are just going to see more of this.

Once again...

If the comic book companies want their single issue sales to start going up permanently, then stop with the trade paperbacks. Those things are killing the industry. Selling more single issues would also help to lower the price...as long as the companies are willing to do that.

something huge is happening with marvel come April 2012, specifically with the X-Men, supposedly the whole Regenesis thing is just a prelude and entryway to the April event. Wonder what it is though considering the drastic changes that were made to the X-World as an introduction.

Oh yeah, I know that. I will probably start reading X-Force again starting on regenesis (i think #19) since I'm also reading secret avengers and with venom in the roster is big treat for me (just like daredevil on the new avengers). But again, I hope this is all a plan to launch some good and interesting tittles as a reply to the new 52 (that would be obvious)

Ive been looking at the cancellations as giving the other books opportunities at better sells, if you like Marvel your going to buy Marvel regardless of what book their selling right? These characters were not their best and i think ending thoes books givens them time to work on doing better on current book, not to mention free up shelf space. I hope its not a stunt to just make room for new books though. Am I wrong to think this?

I must first and foremost admit that I have been part of the trend of cancellation speculation and not among the pleased at the announcements of these cancellations. However, I must take to heart the words of Avengers Academy writer Christos Gage...

"But my problem with this is that speculating a book may be canceled tends to make skittish readers stop buying it and retailers stop ordering it. So let me add: Yes, sales is usually the major factor in cancellations. But the only book canceled that sold more than Avengers Academy was X-23…and I think that may be as much about rethinking the strategy of how to handle that character as anything else. (Purely my speculation.)

“Look at X-FACTOR, one of the books considered in the “danger zone” by this article. It’s been selling at this level for years. YEARS. If a book is profitable, as X-FACTOR is, and it stays at the same level, canceling it is taking money out of your own pocket. AVENGERS ACADEMY has been selling at the same level, steadily

Now, what’s true is the books on this list can’t afford to lose many readers. So absolutely, if you like the books on the lower end of the Marvel sales charts, PRE-ORDER, and recommend to your friends.I do think the “where does the axe fall next” mentality has a way of being harmful and a self fulfilling prophecy. So let’s not go there.."

Too true. Too true. I admit to playing 'where does the axe fall next'... I am among the hopeful that titles like Avengers Academy and Generation Hope will be sustained at this level, or perhaps even elevated. I know that I for one will be adding the Academy to my list upon multiple recommendations and hope that it'll stay on my list for some time. (Generation Hope, I'll be with you shortly, hold on a tad longer friend!)

Its a business abd these hings happen, Though that being said maybe they are concerned about Wolverine related characters over saturization and are trimming the fat so to speak. Now only if they would reduce Wolverine's total number of apperances each month, he could become interesting again instead of a mish-mash of multiple writers compeating ideas and influences.

@IronHerc: Venom is a Rick Remender book. It isn't going anywhere especially when he becomes a regular in Secret Avengers. He has plans to interconnect X-force, Venom and Secret Avengers (all the books his writing). He loves his co-op spy world just like he said in his interview.
