TEEN TITANS - That's a Wrap!

A Special ComicVine Exclusive.

Gang!

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank the legion of fans who have been supporting the TEEN TITANS since our very first issue almost two and a half years ago!

Why am I talking about it like its in the past? Because issue #30 and the annual a week later is going to the final issue of the most recent incarnation of the TEEN TITANS!

No Caption Provided

I'm thrilled the DC is letting me wrap up the story on a high note as the TEEN TITANS square off against the N.O.W.H.E.R.E. in a final battle -- bringing to conclusion the conflict that began in the first issue!

I'm certainly going to miss writing the adventures of Red Robin, Wonder Girl, Bunker and the rest of the gang. But as a huge, life long fan of the title I'm very excited about the whispered rumors I'm hearing race back and forth between New York and Burbank. (Trust me when I say we haven't seen the last of everyone's favorite teen team adventurers.)

So thank you Brett Booth, Tyler Kirkham, Ig Guara, Kenneth Rocafort and Norm Rapmund and Andrew Dalhouse, the ever effervescent Fabian Nicieza and Bobbie Chase, Katie Stewart, Anthony Marques, Mike Cotton, Eddie Berganza, Bob Harras and some guy named Dan DiDio!

It was a blast -- and keep an eye on this space for upcoming news about my latest project!

Read it till #10 but gave up as was going nowhere and too closely tied to Superboy. Can't believe that 20 issues later they're just getting round to wrapping up the whole Harvest and NOWHERE storyline. I look forward to seeing who takes over. But good luck to Scott Lobdell I wasn't a fan of his Teen Titans or Superman but enjoyed his run on Red Hood And The Outlaws.

@outside_85: do you know iif mr Lobdell is still going to be on Superman? I hope so. I'm enjoying the heck out of that but I read someone post on the forums that he was leaving.

Also, what did he mean by "whispered rumors from burbank to newyork"?

Some aspects of this run worked for me better than others, but where it really went off the rails for me is the cross-over stuff with the Legion. I just don't care about the Legion. I don't. I do not. At all.

Edit: This run also had the misfortune of running concurrently with the dearly beloved and unfortunately departed Young Justice cartoon, and failed to satisfy by comparison.

Yeah, that's one of the things that sometimes ruins runs for me. Continous, long lived crossovers with other titles. If they are lucky they might increase sales, but chances are that you're throwing stuff on the plate that the reader doesn't care about.

Someone at DC must have realized they dropped the ball on young heroes in the past couple of years. The relaunch has to be better.

There was a time when the Titans and the Legion were big enough to compete with Marvel's X-Books. Now for the first time since they began, neither of them can even hold down an ongoing.

Yeah... thanks for the ride.

agreed. As a proud owner of quite a few Young Justice comics, a ton of pre-52 Superboy (first and second run), a ton of pre-52 Tim Drake (Robin and Red Robin), and Geoff Johns' Teen Titan (both in trades and Omnibus) ... i despised the new 52 Titans.

its not really that it was bad writing. It was meh. It was passable. I found it both negative and positive that Superboy and the TT kind of existed in their own continuing conflict outside of everyone else's stuff.

But the major problem with it is that not a lot of people just like those characters for their names and power sets, but that is all the New 52 kept of them. Everyone but Bart had COMPLETELY different moods and motivations than pre-52. You could no longer like Tim for who he was to Batman, or what he did to evolve the Robin Mantle... because here he didnt do that. And that went for Cassie and Conner too. And you couldn't love the Teen Titans for the legacy of the team... because this is the first iteration.

DC was relying far too heavily on the mythical "new reader" to flock to this team of young people. But i honestly think in the past, most of the Teen Titan's readership was adults. Sure kids and teens need someone to relate to, but do they honestly go looking for the under-advertised Superboy over ANYONE in the Justice League? No. You dont get to love these characters in their own books. You start loving them when Tim Drake is the new Robin in a Batman book, or when Superman dies and Superboy bursts onto the scene in Adventure Comics, AND THEN you follow them over.

sigh. the worst part to me is that deep in my heart i know they are STILL going to try to force a Young Justice title. They are probably assuming people will flock to the name. But HELLO! half of the appeal of the YJ tv show was that it reflected on all of the old Teen Heroes stories. The people they would be hoping to get by cashing in on the name would undoubtedly leave when/IF they get there upon realizing the characters are vastly different in origin and relationships. The new readership will all cry out "Who the heck are Bunker and Skitter?" ...and then silence.

its all... its all bad. :/

@grim: Agreed. The legacy of heroes is what I loved most about DDc. Seeing Tim do his own thing with the Robin mantle, seeing Superboy's evolution, Bart's Flash connections. This "new" TT just felt...hollow.

How magnanimous of Scott Lobdell... burying the corpse after he's had his way with it long enough to render it unrecognizable. Lodbell's writing throughout the Teen Titans was some of the worst I've seen in DC, only a notch above the sheer incomprehensibility that is Anne Nocenti. The woman must write with a bottle of Cuervo open all of the time.

I loved the story but I think what ruined it for me was half the team was brand new characters that I could not relate too. I loved his take on Superboy, Wonder Girl, Kid Flash, Beast Boy, and Red Robin. I didnt like solstice, skitter, or bunker. They just seemed like space fillers to me. I feel like that took away from the book for me. Anyone else feel the same as I do?

Scott Lobdell once requested on the podcast that we just get one hour of all things nice on the internet. Here's my attempt: Scott, I enjoyed your work in Marvel, but your New52 stuff just wasn't for me. I wish you the best in your future titles.

Here's the not so nice part so beware.

New52 Teen Titans was a complete disgrace whether it was editorials dictation or Lobdells stories, I am glad to see it go and hopefully see it relaunched either as New Teen Titans or Young Justice with a writer and editorial who won't bury it's legacy deeper.

Also, now that TT is gone; all we now need is Superboy to be cancelled too because that has been an abomination as well.

Thank the lord, this book was utter tripe. I'm honestly disgusted that some of you considered the "writing"(it honestly doesn't deserved to be called that) in any way, shape or form acceptable.

It was horrifically bad and Lobdell should never be allowed to write EVER again. Those of you who bought this book are what's killing comics and everything wrong with comics.

I'm incredibly happy Lobdell will no longer be writing the Titans but I hope we get a new TItans title soon. He seems to be indicating that's the case but I'm still nervous about it. I'm a long time fan and I hope they finally do right by the Teen Titans in the new 52

well, well, well, finally, but let's not blame Lobdell alone, although his run's been a snuff-fest

every other Young Justice book has been mediocre to bad post Flashpoint

Teen titans Pre FS was at least readable (for me) -

Red Robin was not the Swan Queen and was his own man, he was about to lead the Outsiders

Solstice was a happy character why did he transform her into TTG! Emo Raven part 2?

Superboy-Kid Flash-Red Robin had a better dynamic

Can't really say anything good about Cassie cos she was never my cup of tea

Skitter (EXTREME!) - Bunker (Gay token)

He went for Trigon again after saying that he was not going to do so - I'm glad this is over before we get the Beast Boy - Raven drama

but hey DC is not the only one doing horrible things with the young line on the other side we got Avengers Arena & Young Avengers - I'm giving an oportunity to Inhumans awakening but those Social media-y recaps & constant PMs are getting really annoying

there's an interesting element that could have been a nice resource for the stories time travel!!! he could have saved this run with that but we get that awful Harvest back, eeek

(Young Avengers miss-used alternative realities so DC & MV are even)

@colonelrunaway: I don't think that is the case here. Legion was cancelled but the Titans are ending with Lobdell and have not been cancelled. He also seems to indicate that we won't be waiting long before we see the Teen Titans in some new incarnation.

just out of curiosity, where's that from?

Assuming you're talking about the gif, it's from a show called Ugly Americans.

My exposure his Teen Titans run has been limited to the two issues that were in the Red Hood DotF trade, but the impression that I've gotten has been that Teen Titans has mostly been the Red Robin show. Maybe they're killing the book a la The Dark Knight to free up Tim Drake for use in Batman Eternal.

thanks I was asking about the show.

I guess maybe I'm a fair-weather Teen Titans fan. I started reading New Teen Titans with Wolfman & Perez. Went back and got all caught up on the original series. Loved both versions of the team. After they left the book, I tried to keep up; but except for a few brief highlights, I guess I'd lost interest. I saw the cover for The New 52 Teen Titans and said to myself, Self, pass. Nothing against Scott Lobdell, but I just wasn't going to throw away money on bad comics anymore. Maybe I'm not ready to move forward. Maybe I just want my Classic or New Teen Titans. Maybe there just aren't any new frontiers. I don't know. Maybe there will be a relaunch that will catch my attention. I'm still waiting for Teen Titans: Year Two.

I would have liked to have seen what Lobdell had planned before editorial made him change Superboy's origin...he was originally supposed to be the same Superboy from PreFlashpoint but because of Superman and Supergirl's origin changes he was forced to make him a completely new character...that had to change the rest of the cast and writing of the series completely

Terrible is as terrible does, I'm afraid to say. Plot holes, bad storytelling, piss-poor characterization, and and outright ridiculous arcs (and who was the genius who came up with Raven's outfit? I've seen costumes at Fire Island that would make for better heroing chucks)-- and Lobdell's Superman is just as bad, to boot.

It's clear that Lobdell's good years are behind him, the same as Nocenti. Now they should just step away from the word processor before they do more damage.

Good luck with your future projects Lobdell, I may not have been the biggest fan of your Titans run, and I may have seriously disagreed with your direction for more than a few of my favorite characters but I've seen you do work on other things that I liked and I'll be sure to check out some of your stuff in the future if it interest me. That being said I couldn't be more excited for whoever comes next and I hope they have a better...a different grasp on who the characters are
