Tarantino Could Have Done 'Green Lantern'

Possibly in another universe...

Could you see Quentin Tarantino direct ' Green Lantern'? Apparently, Mr. Tarantino couldn't seeing as how he turned down the opportunity when he was offered the rights long before the script for the current film was written, according to an interview he did with MTV.

"I was offered the 'Green Lantern...Not since it's been a script, but just like, 'Hey we own the 'Green Lantern.' Would you like it?'"

Tarantino did talk, however, about how there was a time when in his 20's that all he wanted to see were Superhero films.

if I was in my 20s, this would be the genre I'd want to specialize in," he said. "But they weren't making them then, or at least not the right ones. But there also is an aspect where I've kind of outgrown that a little bit."

 Lady Shiva
 Lady Shiva
While he would not necessarily want to direct a film centered around an already exisiting comic book character, Tarantino stated that superhero films are not completely out of the question...just not adaptations.

It wouldn’t be an existing comic book character. I’m a writer. I’d want to use my imagination and not have to fight with geeks’ memories of how this character should be and, ‘Oh, I cast an actor as opposed to a bodybuilder’ or it’s not as good as the way [DC Comics artist] Neal Adams drew him.’ If I were to do something like that, I would want the fun of coming up with the superhero myself.

Thinking this over, I do not know if I could even see Tarantino behind a Green Lantern film. However, if DC ever wanted to do a Batgirl film revolving around Cassandra Cain and Lady Shiva; that is something I could definitely wrap my head around. Just look at how awesome Kill Bill is? What do you guys think?

I'm inclined to agree with his own assessment. Let him create something new - it might give us a solid R-rated superhero flick, which Watchmen failed to do.

I know Tarantino for taking normal, modern concepts and making them bad-ass, I can't see his skills having a positive effect on something that's set in stone like a DC character's story. Like he says, he needs to get his hands into something during the creation process/creating it himself.

Would I like to see him create his own comic universe and then make adaptations out of them? Absolutely.

I'm a major Tarantino fan, but I'm not sure if I could picture him doing a superhero film! Although, he has surprised me before.

I think people tend to generalize what Tarantino is capable of.

Green Lantern is not nearly as violent as, for example, Kill Bill. I mean, Quentin Tarantino would basically turn Hal Jordan into a homicidal manic (Hal Jordan, welcome to Arkham Asylum), along with an ''R-rating.'' Many younger people are fans of Green Lantern, so a massive loss of money right there, and Hal Jordan (not to mention the other characters) would just not be the same. Tarantino is prone to direct excessively violent movies, so hiring him would basically be signing a contract to lose a massive franchise.

I could see him directing 100 Bullets more than anything. That's more up his alley.

@burr787: If you had said you haven't seen any of his films, not just Pulp Fiction, I would've said fair enough. If you had said I've seen Kill Bill, Kill Bill Volume 2, Sin City, Reservoir Dogs and Inglorious Basterds, didn't like them and hadn't seen Pulp Fiction I would've said fair enough. But to give an opinion on him and his whole career because you haven't seen one of them is crazy.

I wouldn't want to see Tarantino do a comic movie unless it was more of street character.  Punisher, Daredevil, maybe even Wolverine, but I couldn't see him doing something like Superman or GL.

I think he's a good director, but I think he's very...well...overvalued. Most of what he does it just a blatant tribute or even satire of past masters instead of anything inherently original. It became cool for college kids to like Tarantino, but I don’t think most people understand that he’s really filling shoes more than making his own tracks.

That would be badass, provided they let him do his thing. If you think about it (and stretch it a bit), Kill Bill 1&2 could have very easily been a Lady Shiva story. Change Bill to David Cain, the Deadly Viper squad to the League of Assassins, Hattori Hanzo to Richard Dragon, and Phoebe to Cassandra Cain and your half way there.

So if he did direct the Green Lantern movie, would we have characters babbling on and on in meaningless, slick dialogue that never goes anywhere? And ridicullous melodrama to hide the fact that the story offered is poorly conceived? Oh yeah, and with loads and and loads of brutal, pointless violence simply thrown in for shock value?
There we go that sums up every Tarantino movie ever made. Gee, sounds like a winner to me! (sarcasm is hard over the internet).

Definatley not a mostly family friendly character like Green Lantern. Maybe a character that was popular in the Dark Ages would fit him better.

I'm really glad this didn't happen. I don't think Tarantino has what it takes to make a movie like this work at all. Everything from the dialogue to the actual camera moves would just feel completely wrong.

Quentin said it best, he would want to create one. We have to appreciate the pressure these writers, actors, and directors have when they take on the job. We can look at Chris Nolan and Jon Favreau and see how great some of them responded to the pressure. But, even when they do an awful job, you still have to appreciate the pressure they were on.

Quentin admitted that his most recent film, Inglorious Basterds, was influenced by Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos.

Um. I'm not too sure about this picture...it looks like he's bleeding from a vagina....

I just interpreted an otherwise bad@$$ picture as feminine sexuality. That shouldn't be able to happen. :/ I mean, sitting in a pool of blood. Awesome. Blood trickling from the stool that is being sat on...menstrual cycle.

I'll be the hated on here,   Tarantino like Seth Green seems limited t creating films that are filty just to be filthy. I'm glad he's "outgrown" these so he can make more masterpieces like Kill Bill.

Green Lantern didn't have anything Asian or Kung-Fu in it, or Blaxploitation-related, so he'd be at a MAJOR loss. :P

I could see him doing a Luke Cage movie, though it'd probably be more of a throwback to the zany "Powerman" days... though needlessly/ridiculously violent. Because I can't think of ANY Tarantino movie that isn't violent. I don't think the man is capable of making a NON-violent movie.

Tarantino would do a WICKED Power Man and Iron Fist movie. I'd even trust him with a Daredevil movie. Green Lantern? Only if it starred Guy Gardner.

I see green lantern as the next star wars for this generation so why have jorge lucas put green lantern in his mind. Jorge lucas would have the mythos an epic  masterpiece. Did anyone thought of that?

i don't think Tarantino would write a good adaptation. he would more likely do a Rami and create his own character.

If Tarantino did direct Green Lantern, then there'd probably be loads of blood in battle scenes. He'd be good for a film if the Red Lanterns were in it, it'd be Inglorious Basterds with power rings in it.

I definitely couldn't see him directing something as pg-13 as Green Lantern but I could totally see him doing an adaptation of something along the lines of Millar's work. A Wanted directed by him with supervillains instead of f@#kin' assassins would be magical.
