Superman fights the 100 Minute War!

Super-storyline stemming from free Comic Book Day.

Things only get faster as the years go by.

10 years ago, it would’ve taken you a lot longer to view this article - - with all its fancy hi-res image files - - on your dial-up connection.

So too, has conflict accelerated. In the 14 and 15 centuries, France was beset by the Hundred Years War. Now, in 2010, Superman’s got the upgrade - - THE HUNDRED MINUTE WAR.

It’s a month-long storyline spinning out of THE WAR OF THE SUPERMEN #0, DC’s contribution to this year’s Free Comic Book Day.   Each episode’s going to detail a 25-minute segment of the conflict.

Battlefield generals are writers James Robinson & Sterling Gates,  Aaron Lopresti, Jamal Igle & Eduardo Pansica and cover-artist Eddy Barrows, whose in-progress work you’ll witness throughout this.

I’ll grant, it’s a killer concept, detailing a galactic super-war fought by hundreds of super-people at ramped-up super-speeds.

Pouring some nitro into the hype machine, Superman group editor Matt Idelson had some rhetorical questions, and one rhetorical answer, on DC’s official Source blog…

With Superman caught between the war-hungry factions of General Zod and General Lane, could any victory be much more than Pyrrhic? What side will Supergirl take, and could it find her at odds with her cousin? Where are the other “Supermen” of the DCU, like Steel and Superboy? Right in the thick of it, is the answer.

If you hadn’t guessed from my interviews and contest videos, little Tommy P was a big pro wrestling fan back in the day. I don’t recall if it was Wrestlemania or Summer Slam, but the hour-long Iron Man match between Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels was one of the bigger bouts that made an impression on me. I can’t help thinking of this as the comics equivalent. Who will win the Heavyweight Belt… er, I mean… rule the fate of the Earth?!
