REVIEW: Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated Season One, Part 2 DVD

You haven't seen Scooby-Doo adventures until you've seen this show.

Scooby-Doo. Those two hyphenated words will either fill your heart with joy or make you roll your eyes. Scooby-Doo is one of the few characters that has managed to survive several franchise reboots. At one point or another, most have seen episodes from some version of the characters but it's possible the current one could be the best.

Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incoporated! successfully completed its first season consisting of 26 episodes. With the 2-disc release of Season One, Part Two, the last fourteen episodes can be yours to watch. The sub-title of the release, "Crystal Cove Curse," is more than just a way to label this volume. It also serves to bring the episodes together.

What sets Mystery Incorporated apart from past versions is while each episode contains its own mystery to solve, there has been an overall mystery weaving its way through each episode. With clues from the cryptic Mr. E, the gang has been following leads, not sure where they will take them and who they can actually trust. Throughout there are revelations about the previous Mystery Incorporated gang that mysteriously disappeared. Those revelations will be surprising for a show that tends to be more on the light-hearted side.

== TEASER ==

Besides mysteries, the show has worked overtime in developing the characters. They still have their familiar features but from seeing the kids' parents to the relationship troubles they have (Fred proposed to Daphne?!?), each episode feels like it matters in the overall scheme of the show. The combination of single episodic stories along with the giant looming mystery adds a great touch.

The episodes contained in this collection really stand out. "Mystery Solvers Club State Finals" features guest appearances by other mystery solvers such as Jabberjaw, Speed Buggy, the Funky Phantom and Captain Caveman! That alone is reason enough for long time Hanna-Barbera fans to check this show out.

"Escape From Mystery Manor" was another big episode with the gang focusing on the disappearance of the original Mystery Incorporated group. Their investigation leads them to a 75-year-old mansion and getting trapped underground. Discovering that they are not alone, the place being full of booby-traps and someone trying to kill them gives the episode a darker feel while still remaining true to what a Scooby-Doo episode should be.

The season's final episode, "All Fear the Freak," is full of revelations, surprises, heartbreaks and a pretty big cliffhanger. Everything changes for the gang and how they can continue is up in the air. The way the season ends shows that the writers aren't just slapping together something and throwing the Scooby-Doo name on it. The show has definitely evolved for the better.

I grew up watching Scooby-Doo. I first started watching it as a young kid and got my daughter started on it at a young age as well (she's currently 8). The fact that both of us love this series is proof that young and old fans can and will enjoy this series. It'd be a shame for those that dismiss the show as 'just another Scooby-Doo' series. From the animation to the voice acting to the stories, Scooby-Doo has come a long way. Mystery Incorporated is a welcome incarnation to the franchise and I absolutely cannot wait for the second season to begin.

Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated! Season One, Volume 2 went on sale on DVD January 24. You can find it in stores, online or get it directly from the WB Shop. Do your inner child a favor and check this show out. With a running time of 311 minutes, you'll be in for a treat.

it was a great series it was bashed on for making Velma make mistakes. Is there topic about characters being weaker than they were because we really need to make that one.

The relationship thing is what makes me hate this show so much. They spend more then half the episode focused on that crap, how would you like it if a new DBZ show came out only its focus is Chichi and Goku's relationship?

@PikminMania: So true. Such a stupid and cheap decision for the show. Love the idea of a larger mystery interweaving throughout the show, that's a really cool direction for it. just the relationship thing actually takes away from a lot of previous character development, ESPECIALLY how Shaggy treats Scooby Doo at some points. and velma's always been a really kind person. This show portrays her as a really sour chick. They took away a lot of personality and added social norms, intending to make the show more popular.

THANK YOU!!! I'm glad you agree. That is literally exactly what I think too. I hate how Shaggy treats Scooby. The best version will always be:

Then of course the original behind it. My friend has a picture signed by the entire original Scooby Doo cast before some of them died, its pretty awesome.

This is the best version of Scooby since the original series. If you have been burned by Scooby nonsense in the past 2 decades you owe it to yourself to check out this fresh and clever series. The only thing that is missing is a cameo from Don Knots!

@PikminMania: that series had its bugs as well and it was too status que. What's New Scooby Doo made and provide some added points but if it had another season it would have gone nowhere. the franchise was in need of changes and this series helped.

@Hazlenaut: I'd say this show is trying MUCH harder to be 'in' and cool with the kids. The whole relationship thing juts pisses me off because it sacrifices what made the characters great in the first place. Its like seeing a Catwoman story where the entire thing is just Selina making out with Bruce... oh wait.

What made it great in the first place is the figuring out. We made allot of jokes at the old series. The dark aspect was a surprise twist along with having the city hate them for their medaling because they ruining businesses. The relationship was the shipping that fans wished and with consequences to go with it.

Seriously I really need to make that adding flaw thread.

Loved the original Scooby Doo series, after that they were rather hit or miss. When I dived into this expecting the same, I was surprised by the great writing, the fact that they put the characters in high school but also spend time developing their characteristics as well as the great nods back to the older shows of Scooby (with the Crystal Cove museum of ghosts that also has things like a small statue of Scrappy Doo that Fred & Daphne vow to never speak about ever again in one episode). The addition of Vincent Van Ghoul (aka Vincent Price) is a nice treat as well to see someone bringing him back & doing a good recreation. Highly recommended.
