ORIGINAL SIN #7: What Made Thor Unworthy?

We know something makes him unworthy of Mjolnir.

If you haven't read this week's ORIGINAL SIN #7, there will be some tiny spoilers. It shouldn't be too much of a spoiler because when Marvel announced a female Thor was coming, back in July, it was also mentioned something happens to make Thor unworthy of Mjolnir.

The question is, what makes him unworthy?

In ORIGINAL SIN #7, the Avengers are fighting the true Nick Fury. They're not fully sure why he's now old or what his involvement in the death of the Watcher is but they're in full force to stop whatever he's doing. As Thor approaches Fury to take him out, Nick whispers something to Thor.

No Caption Provided

You can barely see what Nick said. Looks like Thor was even caught off guard.

No Caption Provided

What did he say, indeed? That's the big question. We've been wondering what Thor will do to become unworthy. It looks like maybe he already has done something. Is this something he just wasn't aware of? It's a little odd that if he committed some unworthy act, he shouldn't be able to wield Mjolnir. More likely he's done something that's caused a chain reaction and the final result was something really bad. Hearing about it is what made the Mjolnir unworthy clause kick in.

Still, if he did something, knowingly or unknowingly, you would think that'd become a factor, immediately. The result of this whisper was Thor being unable to lift the hammer.

With all of this, we still don't know what was said. I actually read this issue on my iPad after getting it through the Marvel app. So of course I tried zooming in as much as I could.

No Caption Provided

It almost looks like you can make out what was being said. Did they actually letter the big secret and then fuzz it out a little? Or is this just some gibberish to fool those of us that try to zoom in like this?

Let's hear from all of you. What do you think Thor did that made him unworthy? What did Fury whisper? I'm sure it wasn't that he left the water running during a drought on Asgard. What could Thor have done, without realizing it, that made him unworthy? Did he have to be aware of the act or was he aware and just kept it as his dark little secret?

Not to my knowledge? Sad, really. I feel for him. A sigil for his return.

Wow, you guys sure do complain a lot.

So I got the picture, zoomed in, and filled in some of the more obvious lettering gaps. It's far from perfect, but it's a start.

He said that he was man, that's why he's unworthy. Feminists will destroy everything so that they can make it all just as retarded as them

hahaha, there is some truth in that.

I still think the only plausible/acceptable reason is that somehow, at some point, Thor had trapped Donald Blake's soul/persona in Mjolnir (effectively "enslaving" him) and the reveal was that Thor "knew" this but had managed to be in denial about it until Nick Fury's reveal forced him to finally accept that's what he had done. This would also go a long way to explaining why Jane Foster could wield it, Mjolnir's personality, and why Odin lost his "control" of it.

Maybe Fury was talking to Mjolnir not Thor.. It makes more sense that Fury said something that made Odin and his line unworthy than to just remind Thor of an old secret that causes him embarrassment. Perhaps it wasn't even English but some enchanted forbidden words. Some sin of Odin.

@lordraiden: And that makes the whole thing even more stupid if he has the power to enchant it he has the power to take the enchantment off it's ridiculous. Remember this...

All too well, even though that series wasn't that crash hot, imo. But how contradictory does that make Marvel?!

Well if he if could be unworthy with a whisper then hell Odin could just erase his memory and poof worthy again, however somebody else would come up and say hey remember those cookies you took from my window when you were 4 thousand and ten and bam unworthy again.

Actually, even Odin apparently couldn't lift it?

If he was unworthy he would've been unworthy before the whisper, like just knowing something couldn't make him unworthy it would most likely have been something he did or something that happened, so why would knowing it at that point make him unworthy surely he would have been unworthy at the time of the thing that made him unworthy happened because Mjolnir should recognise it, because it isn't Thor that decides and just knowing something happened doesn't change anything. Unless it was a thought he had after the whisper I don't see how it makes any sense, and I doubt Aaron has thought further into it than 'oh we may aswell make Thor unworthy would be a cool PR stunt'. If they knew what made him unworthy we would've had an answer by now waiting two years for the answer isn't suspense it's just Aaron not having a clue what could make him unworthy.

I was just about to say the same thing. You would think such a major player as Thor would get better treatment, especially with Ragnarok coming down the road.

This came to mind just now while at work! so I googled "how did thor become unworthy"

I figured it would be answered by now and I missed it, but nope .

You know if a character is influenced by a line spoken to him, he should logically know it, so logically it should be revealed to the readers or build towards a reveal to the readers rather quickly. Not doing this feels like acknowledging that it just happened for plots sake and throws out any feeling of natural development.

@asgaard: That was a cool scene and Hickman seems to at least let characters die with the necessary respect, but it never made much sense for Thor to become worthy again for trying to save something at the cost of his own life, because thats what Thor has always done.

Definitely hit the mark with both comments. I've been saying it for quite some time that they probably never had any real idea how to convincingly make Thor unworthy, came up with the whisper contrivance and have been riding it out as a "secret" until they either pull something out of their a55e5 or enough readers give up, don't care or forget about the issue so they don't even have to make the effort.

Definitely... And the worse part is that marvel says that only Jason Aaron the writer, and his editor Tom Brevoort know the Whisper content, but the question is how did Jonathan Hickman made Thor worthy again in time runs out? (New Avengers issue #32)...

At least Marvel could sound more professional...

I'm 99% sure whatever they say the whisper was will be total bs and completely illogical as most of Aarons writing is these days.

Maybe he was unworthy simply because they needed him to be unworthy for the Lady Thor stuff to sell.

@thorthunder98: I hate what marvel has been doing the past few years. They've straight up ruined some of my favorite characters, now apparently they don't even have an excuse for ruining thor... smh

Avatar image for thorthunder98

@hollow_point: Nope but apparently they said they will reveal it and only Aaron and Breevort know what it was apparently anyway. They probably don't know and are currently trying to think of some BS to fit in that bubble.

So I was going to eat at the cafeteria when I seen the cook.

I thought hmmm a whisper made Thor unworthy and so I would try it on the cook.

I whispered "I know what is in the stew"

He dropped his spatula and could not pick it back up.

He became afraid and ran out of the kitchen.

I had to pick it up and serve lunch and dinner.

I sure hope he becomes worthy again soon because I have things to do.

hahahahah

again the whole whisper thing sucks and makes no sense

My guess. He tells Thor he is Alduins kid. The Norse god of destruction and that's why he is unworthy because it was said he would be the destroy of Asgard.

@antithetical: @owdell: What he said, also Thor realized that and was exiled from Asgard because of it, but he still remained worthy. With Thor being (supposedly) dead now, I don't think we're going to find out what made him unworthy anytime soon, let alone why Odin couldn't lift it (or why Odin is being such a b*tch)

Avatar image for antithetical

@owdell: Yeah, but that happened quite some time ago and wouldn't be the reason he's unworthy NOW.

@monsterduc1000:

You are correct , its one big cluster fuck, because its all based on an enchantment on Mjolnir so the moment Thor screws up then no more Mjolnir, Mjolnir's enchantment doesnt need Nick Fury to step in and tell Thor when and how he screwed up Fury is not part of the enchantment, it would have just happened w/o Fury.

LOL!!! Unfortunately being worthy of the spatula isn't quite as cool as wielding Mjolnir, and it's a lot greasier too. :S
