Off My Mind: Eddie Brock and Flash Thompson—Venom Vs. Venom

With Brock's new tactics, will their next encounter be their last?

No Caption Provided

There's a lot of drama attached to those that were Venom at some one point or another. It's understandable because the relationship with the symbiote is a true symbiotic one. The bonding process occurs on a deep level and for one to live without the other, it could be unbearable.

Yet Eddie Brock managed to walk away. When he believed he was dying from cancer and there was no hope left, he wanted to find redemption. The symbiote's dark ways played a part in the evil deeds he did during his time as Venom. He was eventually cured from his cancer and later developed the powers of Anti-Venom. With those powers, Brock believed it was his duty to cleanse the evil out of others. He ended up using all of those powers in helping to save New York City during Spider-Island and became a hero.

What's next for Eddie?

He is on a collision course with Flash Thompson, the current bearer of the Venom symbiote. They have encountered each other before but are both now in different positions. How will their next meeting play out and will both be able to survive?

== TEASER ==
No Caption Provided

Eddie was the first to truly bond with the symbiote. They had the closest relationship for many years. You would think that would give him an advantage upon meeting Flash Thompson wearing the suit. Because Eddie decided to give up the suit, the symbiote is like a spurned lover. It faced the ultimate rejection. There will be more than simple bitterness for both of them.

After Eddie, the next bearer, Angelo Fortunato was a joke. The symbiote made it clear immediately he wasn't suitable or worthy of its affections. Mac Gargan spent some time with the suit but not enough for it to want to try to return to him as it attempted with Spider-Man when he first removed himself from it.

Flash Thompson has also bonded with the symbiote. Because he has become part of the Secret Avengers, he can't let on that the bonding has occurred. They must remain separated at times to give the illusion that Flash can easily walk away from it. The symbiote won't take this decision lightly. It's not going to understand or appreciate having to be kept locked up and separated from its host.

No Caption Provided

Eddie has been seen on a new mission. With his new outlook on life and still on the road to redemption, he's made it his goal to rid the world of taint of the symbiote. That means all of the offspring that were spawned over the years. Eddie probably knows and understands the creatures better than anyone. Reed Richards, Hank Pym, Hank McCoy and the U.S. Army may have studied the symbiote but Eddie knows it from the inside. He's has been bonded to it longer than anyone.

No Caption Provided

From his time as Venom, Eddie's perfectly aware of the suit's limitations. He knows what can hurt and incapacitate it. This gives him a big edge over Flash Thompson.

How will their inevitable encounter play out? Brock should have the advantage. Thompson has been doing new things with the symbiote and his more militaristic approach that could catch Eddie off guard. But Eddie's brought in the big guns himself in his war against the symbiotes. Despite the quickness it took Flash to bond with the suit, he doesn't have the experience that Eddie does. Brock should win the encounter.

But because it's Flash's book, most likely it'll end up in a draw of some sort. Flash is a likable character as Venom. His struggle with the suit and difficulty maintaining a double life is interesting to see.

The chances of Flash's career as Venom being cut short aren't too likely. Still, we can hope that this battle between the two will make up for the ones we've already seen. We need to see the two go at it completely. Venom vs. Venom. That would be an event that would be worth seeing.

This is a good thing - storylines need to evolve and change instead of getting stuck in the past and just re-hashing the same things again and again. A mini Symbiote "event" with Venom, Antivenom and Carnage would be cool..

To me, Flash is by far the best Venom. With this new angle that Remender has taken with they symbiote, we are just beginning to see its true potential, especially bonded to someone as determined as Flash. It truly is the most deadly weapon on earth. I really feel like Flash will keep it under control, and I hope he does; having Venom on the Secret Avengers is just too perfect for words.

So wait, did Brock just kill Hybrid?

I really kinda hated that they got rid of Anti-Venom. I know that there were some people who really didn't like the character or the direction they took him in, but I liked the change and it was good to see Eddie be something closer to a straight hero than (no pun intended) an anti-hero or villain.

I was hoping Carnage USA would end with the Venom and Canage symbiotes absorbing eachother and bonding with either Flash or Cletus, then have Eddie try to take it down but ultimately have him become the only symbiote chaacter again.

PS the other symbiotes would die in the process of this event.

The problem is the writer of the article ignores that as the Anti Venom powers waned, the suit immediately attempted to reclaim him, not act spurned.

Well that wouldn't really work with Minimum Carnage coming out would it?

Yeah... thats messed up!

No way to undo the bonding, Eddie?!?!?! Really!?!... cause Brock is still bonded to his own symbiote, right? And so is MacGargan... and Peter... and Angelo Fortunato, and Patricia Robertson. WEAAAAAK

@kamionero: I don't think Brock is bonded anymore due to the whole Mr Negative thing.

Angelo Fortunato is dead and last time I checked he'd barely been in the suit a day so I doubt the bonding would have taken place!. Same thing with Patricia Robertson she didn't wear it long enough to bond.

Peter never bonded with the symbiote as that was its main goal when it escaped from Richards lab.

You're right about MacGargan though, he should have bonded by now so I don't know how they plan to go about that.

I think Flash as Venom is inspired. Flash's character has really grown over the years and it's great to see him get the powers and take over a book.

I like Brock the way he is now, as a alien-vampire hunter. Giving him the anti-venom suit was a cop-out. A way to have two Venoms. I much prefer this.

I actually dropped Venom from my pull list after the recent "Circle of Four" arc. Just felt kind of cheesy to me, trying not to sound judgmental but I felt too old to be reading it. I was always somewhat on the fence anyway but enjoyed the story overall but it just started to feel silly.

Venom was one of the characters that got me into comics as a kid. I see Eddie Brock and I immediately want to beg for him to once more be Venom but I have to say that I find it nifty that he's hunting down symbiotes. That is a really cool element. Flash Thompson doesn't really fit what I think of as Venom but it's been well done so far. A clash between the two was inevitable and it's gonna be one heck of a showdown. As much as I do want Eddie back in the symbiote I think it would be a major cop out. Let's see it take some new, unexpected turn. Yes?

Eddie needs to be Anti-Venom again and team up with that one She-Venom from Antartica and fight Flash. Or they could just team up, that would be cool.

Cross-overs kill good books. Happy to say this was more like an interruption, however. And I was into the Circle of Four arc simply because of the nostalgia factor for the New Fantastic Four arc.

@fodigg: Don't get me wrong, I didn't HATE it. Just with the recent birth of my son, I had to really limit my monthly pull list. And there's a lot of quality books out there that I need to read before Venom. Not even a huge Marvel guy but Daredevil, Punisher, and Winter Soldier are just AMAZING in my opinion so Venom unfortunately took the hit. Maybe I'll pick it up in discounted trades or accept them as birthday/Christmas gifts.

EDIT: I do have to admit that the art is BEAUTIFUL!

I wholeheartedly agree with you. Brock is my favorite Venom, but his time in the spotlight as Venom has come and gone. He had an excellent run, but enough is enough and I'm happy with this new take. Simply put, it makes sense.

Flash as Venom has so much potential as a character and I was so pleased that the latest issue addressed a lot of the darker and more emotional elements of the character. I don't see him losing the symbiote anytime soon.

Is that Eddie Brock killing Hybrid? No way! Hybrid is one of the good guys for god's sake and a greatly understated character. If this be true I am seriously displeased. I hope Toxin tears him a new one.

No, it was never revealed, but the conversation in Venom #13 seemed to imply Pat was killed off panel.

"That Toxin symbiote was a real get, baby"
"Yes. Well worth the killing it took to acquire."

I'm so glad Circle of Four ended so we all can enjoy the solo series once more. Co4 could have been great, but for a Venom event it didn't focused on Venom at all... I mean, even in a big team like the Secret Avengers he has some spotlight per number.

As for the last number, I really like Eddie as the antagonist, even more if he is fighting without the anti-venom suit. He's like Travis Bickle at the end of Taxi Driver, none remembers what he's done for the city back in Spider-Island anymore, but he's still the same psycopath with delusions of grandeur.

Flash has his own thing. Eddie Brock is finished. Marvel writers should recognize that or simply give Eddie Brock a new foundation instead of hindering Flash's evolution as a hero. Eddie is still a "bad guy," either way you have it.

hate it or love it, but at the end of these series Venom gonna take over Flash (he already is addicted to the symbiote) and turn into same old supervillain killer machine, while Flash's life will get ruined or possibly even end... morale of the story is - Venom is NOT a hero.

They shoulda left Brock as Anti-Venom. I want a Toxin/Venom crossover. I like Flash as Venom, and the fact that he's bonded but still fighting it says alot. I really want this to last for a bit as there are so many interesting stories that can be told within this new spider-family.

Granted, Eddie never became Venom, and I'm glad he didn't, but at the time it was like a beacon of light compared to Gargan.

Yea i liked Eddie as Anti-Venom.I have no problem with all the symbiots in the Marvel U I just thinking they should be more diverse. Take over more then just humans. Have it bee similar to an alien spore invasion. Send out one to each planet or solar system to take over and they hatch or reproduce (like the mythos currently states) with the intent of their species taking over the universe. One symbiot a year, they should have slightly more variance... basically have them be symbiots but have them react to their host and their environment at the time. Say Cledus merged with Carnage while in the electric chair and either give him that particular ability or make him immune to it. Eddie got Venom in the church while the bells were ringing (i know it happened that way in the movie idk if that's how it happened in the comic) he should be able to use sound as a weapon or be immune to it.

I know a lot of people will dislike my idea but i think it would help out with them feeling like almost pure replicas of one another and not all having the same weaknesses.

I love Flash as Venom, but I'm not liking that I saw Hybrid and whatever her name is get killed by Eddie Brock. I'm more curious how Eddie got his guns, training and intel on the symbiote's. I kind of understand why he wants to destroy the symbiote's, but why the wearer's? I thought he "found God," I know he killed while being Anti-Venom but I just don't get it...

Granted, Eddie never became Venom, and I'm glad he didn't, but at the time it was like a beacon of light compared to Gargan.

Interesting. See, I saw it as a reminder of just how much Gargan Venom sucked. Because it's like, wow, we have two venoms...why won't they just let Brock be Venom if this is what they're going to do with him?
