No Emma Frost In 'X-Men: Days Of Future Past' Movie?

Actress January Jones doesn't think she will be reprising the role for the sequel to 'X-Men: First Class'

Fans of Chris Claremont and John Byrne's 'X-Men: Days Of Future Past' story arc will likely recall which characters made an appearance in the classic X-Men tale and which of them did not. Those that did make an appearance are some of the most recognizable characters in the X-Men universe: Wolverine, Storm, Kitty Pryde and Cyclops -- all of these characters played a significant part in the comic book story, and some have also made previous appearances in the X-Men franchise films. So how many of the characters that appeared in this story will also appear in the film adaptation?

No Caption Provided

One of the challenges that screenwriter Simon Kinberg and the film's director Bryan Singer will likely face is the fact that they will not only have to translate the 'Days of Future Past' story into film, but they will also have to write it in a way that will seem like a sequel to X-Men: First Class. So how do you merge these two stories together in a way that makes sense? How do you make 'Days of Future Past' a sequel to 'X-Men: First Class' and how many of the characters that we saw in First Class will we see in the sequel?

== TEASER ==

According to actress January Jones, we won't be seeing Emma Frost in the next film, at least as far as she knows she won't be making much of an appearance.

I don’t know that I’m in it, I don’t think Emma’s in this one. Well they haven’t told me if I am (laughs). I wouldn’t put it past them though, I got the script for the first one on the airplane on the way there. It’s called Days of Future Past I think, and I think it’s more about James [McAvoy] and Michael [Fassbender] and then Patrick [Stewart] and Ian [McKellan], and I think it’s gonna go back and forth with those so I don’t think Emma’s in those bits. I don’t know, I really don’t know.

It would make sense that the sequel would be more about Magneto and Charles Xavier and the fact that changes made to the time stream could lead to some dire consequences. What do you think? Do you feel that there's still room to have Ms. Jones reprise her role as Emma Frost in the sequel? Are you looking forward to the sequel to X-Men: First Class?

I like Emma Frost's character in the Xmen stories in general. I dont think January Jones was the right choice. IMO it should have been Rosamund Pike hands down. No question about it she fits this role best. Hopefully Emma is cast but just not January Jones lol

Alright, now I feel like we're just running around in circles. Listen, you and I are on the same page, I just don't think we're understanding one another. Those films all tied to the Avengers...because they were the characters that would become the Avengers. Just like how there was a Wolverine movie, and supposedly at some point we're getting a Magneto movie to tie into the X-Men movies...because they're in X-Men comics. So I just don't understand what you're saying, do you mean IF Marvel got the rights back to X-Men they wouldn't reboot it at all, they would just make Marvel: The Movie and throw all these characters from different teams in at once and they wouldn't make any stand alone X-Men movies because Fox had already done them? Now I'm just confused but intrigued. I'm not even saying that would never happen either. For all we know it will.

@benblanks: Because the reason the Avengers and other Marvel films where so successful is because they where all tied together, Marvel knows thats where the money is so why wouldn't they? Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange and the Ant Man films all tie in to the Avengers films if Marvel got the right to Daredevil and X-Men why would you think they wouldn't do the same?

@Jonny_Anonymous: I don't get why it HAS to tie in. Spider-man only became an Avenger a couple years ago, so why should he show up in an Avengers movie? I get where you're coming from, I do, it'd be a perfect world if Marvel had gotten all their eggs in one basket from the get-go and we could have an MCU like the actual Marvel universe but unfortunately that's just not the case, but luckily team-ups only happen every so often in comics, and movies obviously are a lot more sparse so there's no NEED to throw cameos around the Marvel movies just because these characters exist in the same universe. The Avengers never need to meet the X-Men or Spider-man they've got 50+ years of comic book history to draw source material from.

@benblanks: Spider-Man isn't owned by Marvel that's why it doesn't tie in. Guardians of the Galaxy will tie in to the Avengers through Tanos

As much as I want to see this new movie, I also want them to just reboot the hell outta X-Men and hand the rights back to Marvel!

I wish pepole would stop saying this

And yet I have somehow never seen or heard anybody suggest it personally, but I LIKE IT. I never even entertained the possibility because they've made so many movies already but honestly, let's face it, those movies have made such mockeries of not only the comic's continuity but even their OWN continuity in the movie universe that it makes the plot holes in the long history of X-Men comics pale in comparison. With the awesome direction Marvel movies have taken in the past few years I'd be totally alright if they decided to say screw it, let's start all over KNOWING that there will be sequels and start with the right characters at their appropriate ages in order to plan accordingly for future movies to actually make sense.

you do realise if Marvel get the rights back to the X-Men there will be no more X-Men films right? There isn't enough room for both the Avengers and the Mutant race in the MCU, it's just not possible to have that all fit in, all we would get would be some Mutant characters turn up in the Avengers and some cameos else where.

Thats roughly the equivalent of marvel studios just setting huge piles of cash on fire, you do get that right? X-Men is a very profitable franchise and just about as recognisable as the avengers in the mainstream, ergo, no matter who has the rights... there will be X-Men movies... Seriously dude/dudette owning the rights to X-Men and not using them makes (literally) no sense from a business perspective. At least if Marvel has them there'll be some sense of continuity and possible Avengers cross overs, and based on how well they've done with the avengers movies, I'm better they could do a great job with the X-Men too.

Thank you. Again I agree with you. And Johnny I assure you the film industry isn't getting together debating the fundamental issues like "Gee guys, I don't know if there's room enough in our movie universe for X-Men." No. They're asking, "There's money in this right? Yeah? Good." And guess what, the X-Men movie was what started the WHOLE ball rolling on comic book movies being a 'thing' as it were. Yeah you had your Supermans and Batmans and Blades before it, but it wasn't until X-Men that Hollywood really took notice and now there's like 10 comic book based movies a year, so with all due respect YES, there WILL be more X-Men movies no matter who the hell owns them, and if you haven't noticed there HAS been more X-Men movies CONTINUING to be made more than any other property. You're implying they won't make X-Men movies because they won't fit? Spider-man wasn't in the Avengers. The upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy isn't part of the Avengers. And what's more how can anyone argue that they wouldn't reboot the X-Men?! Shit, not only is the average classic movie being remade these days, now comic book movies that barely came out withing the last 5 or 10 years are already rebooted! Spider-man, the Hulk, Batman, now Superman. Plus, if history has taught us anything it's that even if a company owns the rights to a property they HAVE to do something with it or they lose it along with their investment, which is why back in the day Roger Corman rushed a Fantastic Four movie that was terribly low-budget and corny as all hell (yet still better than the new one if you ask me) so that he wouldn't lose the rights. So I hate to come off like I'm attacking you but you are just plain wrong and you're basing your logic on your own opinion not reasoning, common sense and business ethics.

yeah i understand thinking it would destroy the MCU, i think that too. it would just create way too much chaos with so many characters to have to keep in everyones minds. but why not exclude them from the current MCU. they can have their own continuity and dont need to be involved in whatever marvels doing with the avengers. theyre a team of superheroes on their own they can have their own seperate continuity/franchise, and if they wanted they could make several solo movies, as youve already seen with the wolverine movie/s. I might be alone on this but ive always felt that x-men should be a comic in its own world, no crossover stories, just x-books, theres no need for all the other marvel characters to be involved in their stories. i appreciate the crossover stories really, but to me they arent the stories i go to to define what x-men really is.

I love Emma Frost she is my favorite .. but hate that she was played by January Jones, in First Class i did not feel she played Emma at all and she does not look the part either ... please recast her and have her played by a better actress like maybe Anna Hathaway or Rachel Weisz and I would love to see her in the Days of the Future Past movie.

January Jones was awful (which is weird considering I like her in mad men). Re-cast her and blame it on Emma's plastic surgery.

Perfect.

I said it before, I will say it again. You don't need to speak to convey a character. Unless the director yelled at Ms.Jones, "Stop with the air of haughtiness and predatory walk/assessing gaze -- gimme more dead eye/cold fish!!" -- it's safe to say this actor was a horrific miscast.

I think it's safe to say that even if many here have read it, there are details that have been forgotten. It has been a while for some. Myself included. The film only had Beast. So I wld not take too much stock into who was or was not in the original comic version of Days of Future Past.

Absolutely. I adored the First Class movie on it's own merits, and I'm going to give this one the same chance. I mean, X-2 borrowed some cool themes from God loves/Man kills, and I love both of those in their own way; I certainly don't think one ruins or negates the other.

This Days of Future Past won't be the original Days of Future Past, and I accept that. Hey, it might even be better, in it's own way. But I do think that anyone who likes X-men at all would appreciate the original comic story; I'd even go so far as to call it an essential read. It's only two issues and it's a hell of a classic.

The lack of a character who wasn't even in Days of Future Past, that being the aforementioned Emma Frost, is a non issue. Also Sara, you may want to consider re reading the source, as I'm certain we don't see Cyclops in it at all. If memory serves, there is one panel within the comic which shows him as being deceased. Great book, to me at least

As this is a sequel to First Class, i think it would be weird not to have EMMA FROST at all, as the ending of the film has her joining Magneto. However, who's to say they can't just replace the actress and keep the character. Kitty Pryde and Rachel Dawes are just some examples of comic book movies where an actor is changed. If done right, the White Queen should be an awesome character to have in the mix, so i say KEEP EMMA but recast Jones.

Also, bring Cyclops back. But please do the character justice.

I just really hope Jean returns but I had no problem with Emma in First Class. She simply suffered from having nothing to do. As far as the portrayal, I enjoyed the cold and condescending tone of Emma, but January didnt really bring any "spunk" to the character in the same way Rebecca Romijn did with Mystique in the first three...she barely even spoke and yet I felt every bit like she was the Mystique from the comics. Faithful Emma fans may feel differently, but I never was too big a fan of the character to begin with.

But if neither Cyclops or Jean return, there's really no need for Emma then...

I don't remember all the Jan' Jones hate when the movie came out. I didn't think she did poorly to represent Emma. I honestly have more of a problem with Nicholas Hoult as McCoy.

Not really bothered by that at all since Jones' Frost wasn't that well played IMHO.

If Marvel's smart, they're gonna use this movie to establish that the previous Bryan Singer movies was an alternate universe/future, thus eliminating all the movie continuity inconsistencies. Sounds too JJ Abrams-ish, I know.

Days of Future Past:

Past: Professor X, Kitty Pryde, Colossus, Wolverine, Storm, Angel, Nightcrawler (and Brotherhood of Evil Mutants: Mystique, Blob, Avalance, Pyro, Destiny - - [was that her name?])

Future: Rachel Summers, Kate Pryde, Franklin Richards (oh-so-briefly), Colossus, Storm, Wolverine and . . . Sentinels.

Did I miss anyone? Nope, no Emma Frost anywhere, so no big loss.
