Marvel Announces Landmark X-Men Marriage [Spoilers]

The wedding you never thought you'd see is finally here.

You may have already heard the news. Or perhaps you already figured it out when Marvel teased the wedding that was coming out. If you've somehow managed to avoid hearing about this, I'd be pretty surprised. But this is your final warning before proceeding.

ASTONISHING X-MEN #50

No Caption Provided

Today ABC's The View, Marvel announced that Jean-Paul Beaubier, AKA Northstar, proposes to his boyfriend Kyle Jinadu in tomorrow's issue. Northstar first revealed his sexual orientation back in 1992's ALPHA FLIGHT #106. Marjorie Liu and Mike Perkins are putting the relationship to the test and they're about to take their biggest step yet. The question is, how smoothly will their path to wedded matrimony be?

Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso made the following statement:

The Marvel Universe has always reflected the world outside your window, so we strive to make sure our characters, relationships and stories are grounded in that reality. We’ve been working on this story for over a year to ensure Northstar and Kyle's wedding reflects Marvel's "world outside your window" tradition.
== TEASER ==

Marjorie Liu said:

The story of Northstar and Kyle is universal, and at the core of everything I write: a powerful love between two people who have to fight for it against all odds. This is the quintessential Marvel story, one that blends the modern world with the fantasy of super heroes in order to tell an exciting story that begins with a wedding—and continues in ways you can’t imagine.

If anyone knows how to write relationships, it's Liu.

The wedding is set to take place in ASTONISHING X-MEN #51. Here's a preview for tomorrow's issue.

Yeah, it would mean more if they had just done it, instead of waiting till it was 'cool' and announcing it with fanfair... 'Look how progressive and cool we are!!!'

At least with marvel, this has been in the works as a natural progression - the public announcements were unnecessary - but DC is just changing someone gay ... because .... ... ?

Now if they made Clark Kent gay ...THAT ...might be a story.

I mean what is this world coming to - next thing you know Wonder woman will wear pants ...

I don't really think that there's anything wrong with this. Its just part of the story. I haven't read many comics with him, but hasn't Northstar been an openly gay character for awhile? This just seems like part of the characters story.

It's a hot topic, I get it.....and excuse me, but how about celebrating Marvel AND DC's support of the gay community instead of pointing fingers acting like it's all about exploitation? As Marvel's first openly gay character, I think it's a natural step for Northstar to propose to his bf in the wake of a handful of states legalizing and the President of the United States voicing support for equal rights for all.

And thank YOU for letting everyone know just how ignorant you are. :) Have fun living in the dark ages where there is segregation, women have no right to vote, and there's a king yelling at you about which religion to practice. I hope you're happy there :)

I don't have any problem with homosexual characters in comics, and I think they're important, but it does feel a bit exploitative to release press releases about two gay characters getting married.

Oh well, take the good with the bad I guess.

Good for them, i know its all about image and i know its probably not the deep and meaningfull version of events gay readers are craving, but its a start right? Im happy to see DC and Marvel embrace a bigger world and hope they will continue to make their characters more diverse as they go on.

No one is upset about the gay marriage (at least not here) its that they ARE making such a big deal -basically having press conferences, and DC jumping on the bandwagon after specifically stating they would NOT change anyone's sexual orientation , then right after Marvel hints at a gay marriage (Children's crusade) and the President coming out in favor of gay marriage, they jumped on the bandwagon. Just seems like a 'hey look at us, we're cool too right guys??" - moment

Oh, I also want to point out something, I'm pretty sure not ALL of those characters in that variant cover would attend a homosexual wedding. I don't think Wolverine just accepts it, he's probably as disgusted with homosexual behavior as any other biker or rough neck....then again though....he is Canadian.

This is going to be very interesting for sure. :) I hope Marvel can do Jean-Paul and Kyle's wedding very well, considering many writers have handled Jean-Paul's sexuality very well without making it seem like a gimmick or anything. So congrats around!

I'm I the only person that is more disturbed by Gambit trying to put moves on 2 ladies(I use the term loosely) at 1 time then the actual marriage? He and Rogue are no longer an item and.....Trance? At least she seems excited.

I don't even know what to say. This is so screwed up. I'm sure Kirby, Simon and many of the others we've lost are rolling in their graves. Way to take something as simple and pure as a comic book and make a political, publicity stunt out of it. If Cap goes to that wedding, I will be cancelling all my comics.

What Webjaker said so well. This wasn't even a blip on my "Give a crap" meter. Just write the stories. We, the fans, will read. Be gay. Be straight. Whatever. Just write a good story. You want to impress me? Have Wolverine marry Jean Grey. Now that's a story!

Admittedly this is a bit of a publicity stunt but at least comic book companies like Marvel and DC are not showing the same neglect and ignorance some Americans show towards gay marriage and openly embrace the concept of it. Plus it makes sense storywise for the characters to be getting married.

You know what really bothers me, is that there is no homophobic characters out there just a bunch of faces overjoyed to hear these two are getting married. Many of these characters are old and from a different time, era, world?, etc. it will be really weird if no one in this story doesn't have a difference of opinion.

THis is only something created to yell "Look at me (marvel), i am open minded !".

Is it just me or is homosexuality suddenly the big thing for both companies? Gay marriages here and DC outing an 'iconic' character.

I suppose such things are very important to portray as actually happening in comics as well as the real world...but come on, could we at least avoid making it look like a reinvention of the wheel...as in just being one guy marrying another guy?

Hold up.

So, as an openly gay comic book fan (one of far too few), I find myself only half-heartedly into this. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for equal representation in the 616, and I love seeing this happen, but how about we have characters actually kissing on-panel before we get to gay marriage? I loved the entire run of Heinberg's Avengers: The Children's Crusade, and in issue #9, when Wiccan and Hulkling first kiss on-panel it was a great moment for fans. What was more, there were allusions to the two getting hitched at some point in the future. But these are characters who have been together literally since their creation (well, for the most part for Billy with that whole reincarnation thing). Since Young Avengers #1, (which came out in 2005 for those of you counting), the two have been a couple (though it wasn't explicitly stated until Young Avengers Presents sometime later).

Kyle, the one marrying Northstar, his first appearance was less than three years ago. I get that for a playboy like Northstar (because seriously, he has always been portrayed that way), this is a long relationship, but Northstar's "long-term boyfriend" is by no means a long-term anything. He's a character who was introduced to try and dissuade readers from seeing Northstar as a stereotypical gay man hooking up with other gay men for the fun of it. While I understand the urge to give their relationship some credence, this is just sloppy. Look at the great love stories of Marvel. Look at how long they've taken to unfold. Reed and Sue, Peter and MJ, Scott and Jean. The last two there didn't get married until the 90's! Throwing characters into marriages isn't giving them more humanity, it's tokenism and it's cheap.

While that's it for my rant, I must also add that despite the bad taste the story leaves in my mouth, I'll be buying it. Because comic book publishers still need to get the hint that they have gay fans who love that they are receiving representation in comics. Because until I don't have to cheer every time I see two guys kissing on-panel, I will. It's news until it starts being the norm. Hopefully that day's coming.

Uh, yeah. Let's not forget Idie, who still refers to herself as a sinner and as one of the damned because she's a mutant. She's hyper-religious and has constantly been reminding the students at the Jean Grey School that they're all inappropriate sinners. If they write her in and don't have her object to the whole thing, ugh.

I don't know about Logan though. He's been around a good long while and seen plenty. Northstar's pretty badass, and I think Wolverine would judge him on that more so than being gay. Besides, he hardly fits most biker stereotypes... (remember the whole also-a-samurai thing?)
