Let's Talk About Cable and Deadpool's Pouches!

What's in them? Are they cool? The questions that plagued man for centuries. (decades)

No Caption Provided
During the 80s and 90s, when Rob Liefeld gained notoriety at Marvel, we started seeing characters with a lot of pouches on their costumes. Prior to that, Batman was the guy with the pouches, but you knew what was in those: random gadgets for crime fighting. But what about the rest of the characters? (Cable and Deadpool especially) What secrets do those pouches hold? Now, I'm not 100% positive what they hold, but through my years of journalistic work, I believe I can find out what is in those pouches. So, we need to look at the 4 "A"s of pouches.

Awful wind resistance.
Awful wind resistance.

Aerodynamics

I'd really like us to pay attention to Deadpool for this piece. Deadpool wears a skin tight suit with a couple of guns, some weird leg braces, and according to this picture, four swords. Essentially, he has a very sleek design, except when it comes to those darn pouches. Those offer much wind resistance... Think about a swimmer who doesn't shave his whole body (gross), obviously that extra hair (or pouches in this case) offers so much restistance, slowing him down. Maybe Deadpool is so fast, that he needs to be slowed down, and yes, you can use that point in your favorite Deadpool battle thread. So these pouches really work against the character, when it comes to staying quick on their feet.

Not only does the Cable Poncho cover up larger pouches, it is also the new fall fashion trend!
Not only does the Cable Poncho cover up larger pouches, it is also the new fall fashion trend!

Aesthetics

Many people say, "well the pouches are there to look cool." (And for this, we'll be looking at Cable AND Deadpool) In Cable's case, the pouches are aesthetically pleasing. The colors match very well with his weird shoulder harness thing and holster on his leg. Great color coordination! Deadpool's pouches, however, are the exact opposite. The pouches are a fashion nightmare! Oh my! The color coordination is way off. Yes, it matches the thigh braces (what are those), but the color scheme of black and red really doesn't match. Let's be honest, that ensamble would for sure get him on the last couple of pages of US Weekly for being such a fashion lagger! Someone isn't going to Milan this year Wade, and it's you!

What could possibly be in there? He only has two swords on him!
What could possibly be in there? He only has two swords on him!

Ahh! I Know What's In There!

Cable has a lot of guns, and he also has a lot of robotic equipment. This robotic equipment may need batteries, whether they be AA or 9 Volt. Those pouches are a great place to hold your favorite battery. Hopefully, Cable is globally conscious and only rechargeable batteries. Cable likes to save the planet, so I'd assume so. He also needs bullets and clips, and maybe some Mentos. All of those things, including some futuristic grenades, could easily fit into those pouches. (Maybe even a new LED light for his shiny eye!) Deadpool, however, only needs bullets... and Mentos. He wouldn't be using futuristic grenades, and current grenades would not fit in there. (Trust me, I've done the complicated math) So, what's in there? Obviously, it's like a women's purse: wallet, perfume, make-up, chap-stick, cell phone, tissues, picture of niece or nephew, cough drops, and maybe a piece of chocolate or two. (I know what's in women's purses? Yes! I've also researched women!) Essentially, Deadpool is wasting the precious pouch space he has!

Ok, maybe this version of Cable is not too awesome...
Ok, maybe this version of Cable is not too awesome...

Awesomeness

Cable has like 50 guns in this picture, as he should have, and we discussed everything that could be in there, and it makes sense. Aesthetically, they look great and there is no real color clashing. Finally, aerodynamically, it doesn't matter because Cable is a in-yo-face type of fighter and doesn't need to "ninja" around. Cable's pouches work in every way and get a 10/10 on the awesome scale, even though it's now 2010, and pouches lost their appeal in 1995. Deadpool, on the other hand, could contain any number of bizarre things in his pouches, which makes that wasted space. Aesthetically, it clashes with his outfit. Aerodynamically, it's a mess, since he's all ninja-ie and needs to be sleek and stealthy. Let's not even get into the fact that depending on what's inside of the pouches could make noise and give away his position! What a mess! Deadpool's pouches get a 3/10. It's a waste of space, like an above-ground pool!

What do you guys think? Do pouches work? Know any other characters with better pouch use?

I disagree with you about that last pic inferiorego.  I think that outfit, for Cable, with all the pouches is totally awesome.

These are akin to what the Army calls web gear.  They are simply belt pouches filled with ammo and other essentials.  Look at a picture of most soldiers and you will see what I'm talking about.

They aren't quite as cumbersome as you may think.  If Deadpool and Cable can perform superheroics,  I doubt something as trivial as pouches would slow them down.

I know you're just hating of Liefeld, which is your right, and yes, in the PAST his work was a mixed bag, but again and I will say it again, his work has improved.  I don't agree with a lot of his opinions, either but his work today is really good and just wish he wouldn't receive so much flak---pun intended.

I do believe they poke fun at all the pouches in Deadpool #900. He has to empy them all in order to find a watch or something like that.

Well it makes sense that guys like Cable have those pouches, as they undoubtedly have many various little things that a guy like him, who's been across time and space fighting various enemies, would possibly need. Be it little tools, (guns don't clean or fix themselves) extra ammunition, possible explosive devices (flashbangs, smoke grenades, etc.), random accessories that he might need for various tasks should said task present itself, and so on and so forth. Cable always hit me as this guy that tries to think ahead and plan for any possible problem. Which is why he's usually armed to the teeth.

It's just like Batman's seemingly multi-purpose utility belt.

Now who knows what Deadpool keeps in those pouches, though I'm sure they serve a purpose for a wackjob merc like him. For all we know though it's probably mostly gum. :P

whine and fail. almost any character back then who had a gun had pouches.

sorry, but Rob hardly ushered in the pouch look. its based mainly on the US Military. i think the whole idea is that
characters who operated like soldiers, would probably dress like them. its kind of hard to keep your bullets,
bombs, blades, pellets and what not in a leotard. the aesthetic needed to be updated. im thinking the inspiration was...

No Caption Provided
so Larry Hama ushered pouches into Marvel if you want to get technical in the 80's, though they were present long before.
just ask SHIELD.

shouldnt a second slam on Liefeld be in his forum BTW? im sure the fans of Deadpool are loving getting dissed all the time for
liking something by people that dont, and probably shouldnt be reading in that case.

to sum it up, fail because the pouches and gear came before Liefeld, and were still used after.

i still stand by my words: Is he really that bad, or is it over incessant nitpicking? I dont see it. I see some faults personally as well,
but as i put in one of your groups other Anti-Liefeld campaigns all over the boards.

i understand certain fundamental problems with
Rob, and acknowledge a few with his art, but most of the views and evidence
i see presented are not substantial. he's not as bad as half of whats out there,
as a professional nor an artist, and theres some reasoning to his side too.
most people ive seen mock him would praise him in person, or already have.
Rob created and developed alot of our favorites to this day, lest not forget
that much. X-Force, Cable, Deadpool, Domino, Shatterstar, Copycat,
Stryfe, Feral, and many more in his long tenures on New Mutants, X-Force,
X-Factor, Deadpool, Cable and many more books. And im talking about
establishment here, lets not forget our roots and how cool this stuff was when
nitpicking his darker days and slip ups. Its funny how people keep pointing
out that they hate everything he's done, and he's that awful, yet, he created theyre
favorites at the same time. something at least to give thought to in the interest of
being rational and adjective.its fun to point at other people when were not looking in the mirror,
but it comes off worse when our accusations are actually false.

seriously, i think im going to make a huge blog about "easy targets". People like Fraction, Rob,
Millar, Loeb, ect, and try and present a more adjective view and informational one as to at least
where theyre coming for in order to even out theyre usually pointed out faults.

so do the bads really outweigh the goods the guys done.

and really, you know how many comic
artists i can name that have art that isnt anatomically sound, and much, much worse than Robs?
alot, especially in a field where one is taught to draw over-exaggerated characters and cartoon ones.

and yes, this is me. devils advocate.

No Caption Provided

now ill play ball, so you dont think im Robs press agent or something either. He makes alot of weird anatomy.
He's gotten better as others have stated, and it isnt always off, just sometimes, which again, is nothing i havent
seen worse of. Personally my big urk with him is the male face. its in the first picture in this thread. he over uses
the teeth grit constipated make face. ive never liked that, but it didnt bother me to an extreme. the things i dont
agree with are costume points. if Rob does something right, its design characters. People actually leave that stuff
in the costumes he created, and thats saying something. Also, the mention of this stuff coming out in his early work.
No one was bothered by it then, and actually anyone who liked the characters thought it was cool, admit to it or not.
I see him as bad, but not that bad, and the great characters he gave certainly give him more deserving credit.
the major proof of this again is the fact that Marvel has this guy return to books, they ask him, for one reason:
the sales of books increase when he does, and he gets thanks for it.

oddly, had i brought this to light first, i would be called for insinuating a flamewar. just thought id point that out.
bashing something and not expecting a rebuttle is sort of ridiculous, especially when you post it numerous times in a few days.
no malice in those words, but just noticing the little details, as one would to artist license. lol.

all in all this is a bash on Deadpool as usual, and using Liefeld as a springboard. sad part is, Cable #25, and Deadpool Corps
are not  essential books for anyone to buy, so if you really are bothered by it, you dont have to be bothered by it at all. you then reserve
the right to not spend money o something thats not your preference. but that being the case, why continue on those who do?

and of course if its still a huge deal, as it seems to be, show some brass and do what you people do.
get Rob on this site, interview him and confront him on these issues, so everyone can get to the bottom
of it and find a happy medium.

Pouches are practical. When you are combating an other-worldly tyrant, you HAVE to be able to get to your Chapstick! It is imperative to be able to access hand grenades, lock picks, batteries, and instant coffee wherever, and whenever, is necessary.

@CATMANEXE: Well sir, I'm not slamming Rob. I just wanted to write about the worthlessness of pouches and I used Rob's pic as an example. Deadpool and Cable were the examples because that's the first two people that popped in my head when I thought "pouches"

@inferiorego: its cool. im obviously mucho fiesty about the issue, because there has been a Liefeld slamfest already in progress, and, well i like defending the underdogs and as pointed out give credit where credit is actually due. i in fact just got finished with the newest issue of Merc With A Mouth and his art was easily the best in it, and his art was drastically improved over the Heroes Reborn days.
sorry i more than insinuated you. i got PM after PM about my support of both Rob and Deadpool. added, the sbjects i your threads were copied elsewhere following myself as stated. ill back off the issue so i dont go the route of stressing myself out, as ive already said what i felt needed to be said. again, he's not that bad.

as for the pouches i think you got your answers here.
personally ill take them over leg straps with nothing connected to them any day. lol.

FINALLY!!! Someone finally comes out and discusses this topic after all these years. I know it's been mentioned from time to time, but I'm glad this finally gets the full on treatment. I mean seriously, do they keep anti-itch cream, condoms, bubble gum, lucky charms, and spare keys in those pouches? Cable has all those energy plasma guns... Why does he need all those pouches? Definitely not for storing extra ammo! Maybe that's where he keeps his meds. I think I saw them faintly marked S M T W Th F S.

" FINALLY!!! "
