Justice League: Cry For Justice #5 Review, I'd Like To Shake Roy's Hand

Have you heard the crazy news about this issue?

I'm sure you've heard by now.  There's some crazy stuff happening in this issue.  Forget Blackest Night.  If you haven't heard, this is your warning.  But if you've been to Roy Harper's page or around the boards, you already know what happens.  How does the rest of the issue stack up?

While I am enjoying Blackest Night, it is nice reading a book not tied directly to it.  On the other hand, this book takes place before Blackest Night so it does make you question where things will end up.  Now that you know what happens to Roy, what do you think?  Was this a good plot element or was it done simply for shock value.  As I stated, when I flipped through the book and saw that image, I was literally like,"Holy Crap!"  DC is more likely to do drastic changes like this to its characters.  I wonder if we'll see any long term repercussions or if he will simply get a cyborg arm.  On the hand (ooh, I didn't mean that), couldn't Zatanna simply say, "mra hcttear"?  If this new version of the Justice League is supposed to be more about "justice," it should be interesting to see how this act will motivate them.  Who will they go after?  Who is really to blame?

I'm sure there will be people that think this is cool and others that will hate James Robinson for Roy's fate.  But let's be honest, you can't put all the blame (or credit) on him.  The DC editors had to approve this move or maybe even suggested it.  As in the other issues, Mauro Cascioli's art is pretty amazing.  There are times where things look a little awkward but it's still a feast for your eyes.

With two more issues left, we're left wondering where is this going to go.  I mentioned that this occurs before Blackest Night but we haven't really seen this team in action together during the mini-series.  If something major like this happens in the fifth issue, I wonder what else we can expect in the final two.

I am no longer first comment -_-

I oddly liked this book a bit.  Roy's accident made me drop my jaw.  I just hope robinson doesn't avoid the powers of Zatanna

If Donna Troy and Starfire wanted to go swimming in my pool, the last thing I'd do is complain.

@Pez85: Well maybe he wasn't actually complaining.  But his mom doesn't want him at the pool when Starfire's there due to the way she sometimes bathes.

I find it so annoying when they put something on the cover that doesn't even happen. I understand that a cover needs to be eye catching and dynamic, but it shouldn't lie.

The removal of the arm reminds me slightly of what happened when they had Aquaman lose his hand. It would be funny if a Black Lantern Ring would attach to his dead arm, fly about, and smack him around. "Stop hitting yourself! Stop hitting yourself!"

I actually really liked the premise behind the Justice League Unlimited. How they would have this huge roster of heroes and assign missions and create teams on the skill sets needed, but that also has it's serious draw backs. The idea does make things seem more realistic. It's often more interesting as a reader to see a hero overcome events that they aren't prepared for. The army of heroes just makes them seem far too powerful.

I think Roy's thing was done completely for shock value, especially the way it was delivered. It just came off like he was bursting out going ohh guys I've been mutilated! and everyone stares at him in shock with an exclaimation mark over their head and the comic-relief guy yells "Twist!" while everyone else gasps collectively. Probably mostly because of fact that it happened off screen and it's like the first shot is of him looking like he went 2 rounds with a woodchipper. Furthermore, this book seems to change directions really, really fast and it's hard to tell where it's going and that has nothing to do with good writing. He's not keeping us guessing it's just the plot is jumping around so much you can't tell where it's supposed to be going. It's also kinda weird because it made it look as if Shazam was responsible for the attack on Roy, I don't know if that was intentional or not . If it was Shazam then it's weird because two panels earlier he was in the room with everyone else, no one remarked that he had disappeared and the victims seemed to have claw marks. If it wasn't then it's still weird because the last panel had him facing Supergirl as if they were about to fight. I was also disappointed too at how whiny and stupid Black Canary was in this book. She's supposed to be a headstrong leader and she just comes off as an insecure joke character compared to Hal and Ollie.

I don't think it's a bad read so far but a lot of things have happened out of character. If Shazam has turned into a supervillain for no reason I mean that just adds to it. I like Prometheus acting like a legitimate supervillain mastermind instead of a 2nd stringer but we're 5 issues in and he hasn't really done anything. I liked Batwoman, I thought she did ok and I'd like to see her contribute in some meaningful way in a Justice League book. The artwork is really good but I don't think it saves the writing. The dialog with Blue Devil and Congorilla make them seem very 2-dimensional. Neither of them seem to go a sentence without using the word 'justice'. I don't think I've ever read the word justice so many times as in this series. People can't shut up about it long enough to convey a point and it's getting annoying. What is up with Firestorm? Batwoman requests someone fly to Gotham, he says "I'm on it" and flies away and then 2 panels later he's standing with them all again. Kinda odd.

On the whole I like the idea of this book but I don't care greatly for the application of that idea.

Hey I like a little meat on my girl's thighs lol

Love the artwork though. I need to pick up the back issues namely for the artwork alone.

And the only one I could think of that would do something like that. Would be Grodd taking a bite on Roy.

Thanks for the tidbit of info firstly, but how is Gorilla Grodd taking down the likes of Flash, Congorilla, Shazam, Hawkman, Hawkgirl, Supergirl, the Atom, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Blue Devil, Donna Troy, Starfire, The Guardian, Red Tornado, Plastic Man, Blue Beetle, Vixen and Firestorm all at once?

I really can't see him taking the win here.

First off, unless Roy croaks, he'll get his arm back sooner than later.  I just can't see him going "armless" with mystics like Z hanging around.  G-Man wanted to see a fight.  So do I, and we'll find out soon enough.  There's no way James Robinson is going to keep that from us.  Onthe bumout note regarding this latest rocking ish, the new Wizard has a piece--in the new crapbag layout they started a few issues back--discussing Top 10 good and bad trends of the decade.  This is an example of when they talk about meaningless covers that have nothing to do with the story.  Although it says: "Love and Dismemberment!!", the whole Cpt. Marvel Jr.-Supergirl liplock was unecessary.  I've been reading the mini and when I saw the cover last Wednesday I thought, "Ooookay?"  Now, the 7th grader in me was thinking, "Ummm, what the s#!t is Supergirl going to do exactly to Cpt. Marv?"  Then the 28 year old me figured it out when ol' Roy was without ol' righty.  True story.

Anytime ;-) ....You also forgot Superman,Batman,Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, Batwoman, Starman,Black Lighting, Aquaman and Zatanna lol.

Lol Last I checked Grodd is a highly-intelligent telepathic ape who is incredibly strong. He's given the league problems before in the comics and animated series. So it's not unusal to make him one of the top contenders to take on the league.

And I just said him maybe being the one to do that to Roy . I didn't say anything about him taking on the league.

And also I did say I need to pick up the back issues since I haven't been following this series directly. I just know a little bit of what's going on. :)

If that's the case, it's the mother's own fault for allowing a skimpy costumed alien hottie live in their home. Oh, and upon a second viewing of the review, I couldn't help but laugh when you said "we see how hard it is for Cliff"

This book seems to be planting the seeds for Hal's League as he rejoins the other JLA.  This book seems to be building toward something as many DC writers and Didio have said in interviews that there will be a big JLA driven storyline next year.

@Dane: Well, he could get a by the magic users by simply making himself invisible with his psychic powers. Magic works on the basis of altering the perception of reality and, if by mental command the magician's reality was altered by Grodd, it becomes the accepted reality that their powers can affect. Thus magic can't affect what the magician already accepts is not there. Also, Prometheus has already snuck aboard the Watchtower, he could get in here too, deposit Grodd throwing a monkeywrench (heh) into the heroes schemes. I'm gonna say it was Animal Man being coerced by Prometheus.

I have absolutely no idea which magic users you're referring to but the concept of Gorilla Grodd defeating Zatanna or Dr. Fate is abhorrently stupid. Secondly, neither Grodd, Prometheus, Animal Man nor the combination of all 3 would stand a hope in hell against the expanded Justice League in this book.

SPOILERS!!! I am hypothesizing during this post. It may turn out what I am saying is true.

Its a matter of situation tactics. Check out what Prometheus did in his first stab at the JLA (The roster of which contained Superman, Batman, Martian Manhunter, Zauriel, Steel, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Green Lantern, the Flash, Plasticman, the Huntress, and Oracle).

"In issues of JLA, Prometheus took the place of Retro at the Justice League Watchtower on the Moon and single-handedly almost took down the League: he shot the Martian Manhunter with a dart that turned his shapechanging power against him- intending to use a similar drug against Plastic Man when he showed up-, infected Steel's armor with a computer virus which commanded the suit to damage the Watchtower, hypnotized the Huntress and then knocked her unconscious, attacked Green Lantern with a "Neural Chaff" that rendered his ring useless by making it impossible for Lantern to concentrate enough to use it, trapped the angel Zauriel in the Ghost Zone, and tricked the Flash into believing that he had planted motion sensitive bombs that would explode if the Flash used his powers. He defeated Batman in hand-to-hand combat with the aid of a device that downloaded the skills of the thirty greatest martial arts masters in the world (including Batman) into his brain and a pair of lights on his helmet that strobed in an erratic pattern to cause disorientation. At the time, the Watchtower was filled with innocent civilians that the League had invited for a tour. With the Watchtower under his control, Prometheus then demanded that Superman- the only hero he could not defeat- commit suicide in exchange for the lives of the hostages, sacrificing the two things which he presumed would matter to Superman; his image and his reputation. He also expressed his pleasure at the fact that "Superman said 'Prometheus' and he didn't sound scared."

The current roster is Captain Marvel, Supergirl, Red Arrow, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Zatanna, Red Tornado, Vixen, Congorilla, Hawkman, Hawkgirl, and I will assume Atom and Starman. Not a psychic in the bunch. Advantage: Grodd. Lets look at Grood vs Zatanna. Zatanna's magic is limited by her vocal components in direct coordination with the reality she wants to alter.. Grodd's powers are not. Grodd can use his powers to make her believe the reality she alters is percieved how he wants her to see it. She could in fact say "ddorG raeppa!" and he would become visible, but not to her, because he is controlling what she perceives. Then it is a simple matter of Giant super strong Gorilla vs lady in tophat and fishnets....who can't see said Gorilla.  So its not stupid....its plausible.

Or maybe Congrilla is Grodd projecting a mental image?

Another proof positive is that Slade the Terminator took down a whole mess of the JLA/JSA in the Identity Crisis limited series by himself. One of the downloadable trait series Prometheus has is from Slade (he also has Batman). Also, as stated earlier in this series, Prometheus set off the Clayface bomb which would have killed Green Lantern Supergirl Atom and Green Arrow, had it not been for the timely arrival of Captain Marvel.

Could be Prometheus is disguised as Captain Marvel(he did call down the lightning and did not change back to Freddy Freeman)? That gets both Prometheus and Grodd (as Congorilla) aboard without conflict or suspicion and takes away two of the heroes from the JLA roster.

He wouldn't, It'd be a special effect of sorts (Hence why he never changed to Freddy Freeman), and the bomb would have served three purposes 1.) Ingratiating his ruse as CM by allowing the JLA to think he was the reason they were saved. 2.) Shuts Clayface up. 3.) Provides a glaring blinding light that looked like the lightning of Shazam.  Look back at the introduction of CM to this series, everyone else has motivation to be on this team, what was his? If I remember correctly, he sorta just showed up. (And there is a very good chance that I am not remembering this correctly). Everyone else had a friend die or was personally affected by Prometheus except CM, so whats the story? Prometheus has imitated heroes before to invade the Justice League, could be trying an old trick on a new set of heroes.

Which bites because I am a HUGE Captain Marvel fan and thinks DC is just being 'duh' by not giving him the Superman seat on James Robinson's new Justice League.
