Gotham TV Show Coming to Fox

Will we finally get the GOTHAM CENTRAL show we've all been asking for?

Here's some fitting news for today. It's being reported that Fox won a bidding war for Gotham, a live-action TV show set in Batman's hometown. The show is supposed to explore James Gordon's story as well as some of the villains that have made the city so well known.

No Caption Provided

Warner Bros. TV and Mentalist creator Bruno Heller are on board to bring about a show where Gordon is still a police detective in the Gotham City Police Department. In other words, don't expect Batman anytime soon.

No further information has been released. We'll definitely keep an eye out for more details.

I like the Idea of Gotham, DC seem to be playing their current movie slate (BBegins, TDK, TDKR, MOS) and a revitalized live TV Slate (Arrow) on a more serious take than Marvel and ALL they are doing right now.
Gotham cannot be done like Marvels Agents of Shield, which is more camp, aesthetic and suited for Gen Z contemporary audiences (Got to give it props though, it does know what it is, which is its most fearsome weapon, and why I will watch it). Gotham demands a serious take, call it dark, call it gritty, it cannot be all flashing blue and red tones with perfectly manicured people whom are very difficult to believe as being agents. Gotham needs to be a dark place of nightmares (No not the Scarecrow kind), crime and corruption. Jim Gordon needs to be the shining light in this darkness, he needs to be incontrovertible, hopefully the program will beat the hell (physically and mentally) out of him to get to this point.

I am excited at the idea of introducing Renee Montoya, Harvey Bullock, Barbara Gordon et al into the mix, there is great drama there already.

You could see an introduction of a young Harvey Dent, Penguin, the Falcones, even a misguided GCPD doctor by the name of Victor Von Freeze. Origins could be rewritten to fit. Ras Al Ghul and the league of shadows could make an appearance as a shadowy hand behind dark occurrences in the city.

The Flying Graysons could be plying their trade (obviously Dick has not been thought of yet), a world champion boxer by the name of Ted "Wildcat" Grant may swing by. A renowned physicist named Al Pratt may show up as well.

The show could highlight Thomas Wayne, it could even create a relationship between Wayne and Gordon, both idealists trying to create a better society in the Hell they live in.

Agents of Shield has the potential to become mired in a "Freak of the Week" style show which can wear its welcome out quickly. Gotham could become a very adult serialised tv show with the ability to throw in some super powered types (Freeze) in if needed.

Gotham could be in a shared universe with Arrow and MOS, I saw a great comment on IGN regarding Gotham and a DC shared universe, which answered the question brilliantly

"With Gotham starring a younger Jim Gordon and Batman vs. Superman featuring an older, more experienced Dark Knight, it’s possible that the show could be considered the early canon for that universe without ever overtly expressing it. Instead of confirming it, they could simply never contradict it, and I would think most fans would be happy to connect the dots themselves."

I rest my case for Gotham...

Give DC a try. There doing good Animated programs and now TV Shows. I know some people do not like the show called Arrow. I watch that show because it is DC. I do not watch show like Marvel or read there comics because there comics are lame and boring to me and there own by Disney. DC Comics are much better. There just doing there best to make good TV Shows and Movies just give them a chance.

If this is going to work, they have to emulate the Gordon of "Year One" who is a former military guy that's not above sticking a baseball bat in a perp's mush. Preferrably, to someone like the Condiment King or Crazy Quilt....

No negativity on the idea. I love it. Its the negativity on the studio. FOX has a habit of making stupid decisions. Look at all the shows they cancel.

Oh, alright. I see what you're saying I read "go be cancelled" as hoping the show would be cancelled. (Telling it to go get cancelled.) Your name is "supreme_marvel" so I assumed it was some kind of Marvel supremacy thing hoping that the DC show would fail. I was wrong! =/ Shouldn't have made assumptions.

I meant to say "Gonna be..." but I thought people would get it. My bad. Yeah, I get that Marvel thing all the time. However, I'm a BIG DC fan. Supreme Marvel, it's linked to him.

Will you pipe down? Seriously... internet...

This is awesome news! I'm assuming the Falcone crime family will play a somewhat big role? This is really good news for the lesser known villains, hopefully they'll get some much deserved exposure.

EDIT: I always forget, tone doesn't come through text on the internet. I'm not saying "PIPE DOWN A**HOLE!" I mean it as in... this is time for celebration... take your negativity elsewhere.

@fallschirmjager: I know it isn't necessarily based off of it but I personally feel it is a concept perfect for television. Not saying it will be good because that has more to do with the writing and performances than the concept but I am excited for this.

Excellent! So excited that the CW didn't win the bidding war! If they would of won, we'd get a poster of a shirtless Gordon!

I have mixed feeling about this. On one hand, I want to see more well-done live action TV shows based on comic characters, but on the other, can we please stop just cranking out police dramas? I understand there's a bit of a "twist" to the standard crime drama, but that's the tagline for EVERY crime drama being made. Oh well, we will see.

Hmmm could be cool if done right and I would recommend B list characters Ventriloquist, Mr.Pyg, Talia, Firefly or the Mad Hatter to change it up and mix in the A list characters later

Err, the last live action show that had anything to do with Batman was Birds of Prey... and that was how long ago and sucked how bad? (First episode of BoP has Aaron Paul BTW). And prior to Birds of Prey, what was the last live-action Batman-related TV series? 1960s Batman!

Meanwhile, in that same time period, Superman had 3 live action TV series. Heck, when it comes to live action TV series, Batman himself is actually tied with Wonder Woman, Arrow, Aquaman and The Greatest American Hero!

And no, I'm not going to include cartoons in this comparison because people aren't watching super-hero cartoons in prime-time slots on major network, non-cable TV. If we counted cartoons every time anyone mentioned 'TV series', then Spider-man would be prolific and played out as much as Batman.

But if your gist is we really need a new Wonder Woman show instead, I agree completely there.

I really really really hope this takes the tone of Gotham Central and really fleshes out the characters in the GCPD. I have seen it described as a Jim Gordon origin but I hope that is just an over simplification.

Ok, I'm intrigued... but let's make this the last 'supporting characters from a film get to star in their own TV series' show. That makes 3 (if you count the rumored Agent Carter series), and 3 is enough. I mean, what's next, a sitcom titled 'Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olson'? (Ah, wait... that actually sounds like fun...umm....)

What I want to know is:

- These characters going to tie into the films?

- Crossover with Arrow? The Flash spin-off?

Everyone's forgetting that Gotham has a rich crime and villainy history. A pre-Batman Gotham means seeing the beginnings of Cobblepot, Black Mask, Arkham, Harvey Dent, Harleen Quinn, various serial killers (Zsas, Calendar Man) etc. There can still be a lot of super-villain shenanigans in a prequel show about Gotham.

Yeah, that could be cool. I mean, think of all the characters they could put on a show like that:

There's way more to work with in the GCPD than people might initially think, especially when you consider how many of them are or develop into actual superheroes in the comics. Azrael, The Spectre, and the Question vs. Two-Face, Penguin, and the Joker? Yeah, I'd watch that.

On the one hand, I'm glad this is not on CW because it spares us the typical cheesiness and overly-romantic garbage.

On the other hand, Fox doesn't have the best track record ever.

I am very excited because Gotham Central was a great series and this is an excellent idea for a television series. I hope that they are ballsy enough with it to put it in a more comic-book like world rather than a more realistic world. That was one of the charms of Gotham Central, after all. Normal cops trying to keep up with a comic book world.

Hoping it has Renee Montoya and shows her home life but I have serious doubts because y'know Fox and all that. But one can hope. Might download this after it comes out and all that if I agree with casting and all that and they don;t whitewash poc characters like the CW did.

Sure, why not. I don't think they can go wrong unless they change characters that are not like their comic counterparts.

I wonder what their concept will be for this show, attempting to stop a big villain over the course of the season or individual cases that exploit how it is to live in Gotham.

Oswald NEEDS the be the essential villain for the series. Like Lex was on Smallville. Oswald is Gotham's greatest enemy and he the type of character that can carry the series as the main bad guy.
