Essential Comics for 5-4-16

Looking for something to read this week? Here's our recommendations for Wednesday's new comics.

Every Wednesday, hundreds of new comic books are released, and figuring out what books are worth reading can be a daunting task. Luckily, we're here to help you figure out which books are worth your time and money. Here are seven upcoming issues, in no particular order, you should consider buying on Wednesday, May 4.

Poe Dameron #2

Published by Marvel Comics

Written by Charles Soule

Art by Phil Noto

Considering Wednesday is Star Wars Day, we thought we'd throw some Poe Dameron into the mix. Last month, Poe Dameron came to Marvel comics, and it was pretty awesome. It'll be exciting to see where this goes next, and with Phil Noto on art, you can expect a gorgeous-looking book.

Moon Knight #2

Published by Marvel Comics

Written by Jeff Lemire

Art by Greg Smallwood

Is Marc Spector insane or is New York City secretly under attack? That's the question the first issue of Moon Knight asked. While previous volumes featuring this character have dealt with Spector's sanity, Lemire and Smallwood bring this to the edge of the surreal. This is a must read, whether you're a fan of the character or not.

Punisher #1

Published by Marvel Comics

Written by Becky Cloonan

Art by Steve Dillon

The Punisher hasn't had his own series in quite a while. Becky Cloonan and Steve Dillon take on this character, and like you can see from the preview below, expect a whole bunch of violence. This isn't Dillon's first venture with the character either, and his art works best with something that's a bit more grounded in content.

Batman Beyond #12

Published by DC Comics

Written by Dan Jurgens

Art by Phillip Tan

Batman Beyond has been a bit crazy over the past couple of years. However, it seems like Bruce Wayne is returning this week to change everything. What is this going to mean? Dan Jurgens has been known for doing some dynamic and different things for this series. We'll see what he has up his sleeves this week.

Unfollow #7

Published by DC Comics

Written by Rob Williams

Art by Marguerite Sauvage

When Vertigo launched their new series, Unfollow became one of the standouts. Issue #7 will be taking a look at one of the 140: Courtney. Much like last month's issue, which followed Deacon. Artist Marguerite Sauvage jumps on board to tell the story of the reality TV star who was chosen to inherit millions.

Nailbiter #21

Published by Image Comics

Written by Joshua Williamson

Art by Mike Henderson

Last month, Alice found out the Nailbiter serial killer is her father. Now, a new story begins. Does this mean Alice is destined to become a serial killer too? Joshua Williamson and Mike Henderson have really crafted an excellent book that delivers both mystery and horror. This should be a great jumping on point.

4001 A.D. #1

Published by Valiant

Written by Matt Kindt

Art by Clayton Crain

Valiant Entertainment always delivers when it comes to their event books. This time, Valiant steps into the future into their already established 4001 A.D. timeline. Clayton Crain is an amazing artist and already worked on Rai, which takes place during said time period. We're also excited to see how Matt Kindt is crafting all of this.

BOOM! has a new mini-series hitting the shelves this week which mixes the crime genre and eating mystical spiders.
