Comic Vine Question of the Week RESULTS: Favorite Spider-Man Movie

Did Spider-Man 3 win?!?

Our month-long celebration of Spider-Man continues! If you're wondering why Peter Parker's getting so much love on the homepage, it's because he's our first character of the month. This week, we wanted you to reflect on the web-slinger's live-action movies. After a 2 day voting period, 375 Viners voted and they've picked 2004's Spider-Man 2 as the winner! It took a fair lead, too. Way to go, Sam Raimi. Now, do yourself a favor and click here for mandatory background music.

Remember that time Alfred Molina played Doc Ock and he fought Spider-Man across the city on a train?! Of course you do, and that's because it was an awesome scene and Otto was a very memorable villain. Sure, it's a little odd seeing Octavius get punched in the face by Spidey a bunch of times, but who cares when it's so entertaining? We can just assume Parker's holding back a lot as well, right? Having a compelling foe is reason enough to give this movie praise, but on top of that, it also heavily addressed the sense of responsibility -- with great power and all that -- that Peter has. Can he simply stop being Spider-Man and let the world go back to the way it was? It sure would be easier for him since being a hero is taking a huge toll on his life. This movie shines the spotlight on that, but instead of being a total downer and building-up to something uplifting and inspiring, it has a great sense of fun throughout and even a comic book-ish vibe at times. Plus, the score is unforgettable and fits the movie's atmosphere so well. So yeah, it's fair to understand why so many love this movie, especially since it was such a huge hit at the time.

The Comic Viner JonSmith explains why they believe the movie is, well, awesome.

"Oh, I wish I could vote twice. If so, I'd vote for Spider-Man 2 AND Amazing Spider-Man 2. Instead, I have to give it to the good ol' Spider-Man 2. It was just the better movie, in my opinion. Better villain, better acting, Peter Parker was getting his butt kicked from every possible angle, in suit and out. Fantastic. Ock was awesome, Alfred Molina nailed the role, the arms looked awesome, and the whole 'tragic villain' thing was great in all respects. Peter losing his powers and having to relearn what it means to be a hero to return to being Spider-Man was... I'm running out of positive words to describe all the awesome parts of this movie. Maybe it's the nostalgia goggles talking, but this was the best movie out of all the Spider-Man films."

No Caption Provided

The Comic Viner DaltonMunnal says why they think the second place movie, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, is the best one.

"TASM2 > TASM > SM2 > SM > SM3.

Best acting by far. Most emotionally invested story. Feels the most like a comic book on screen I've ever seen (possibly more so than The Avengers). I have mixed feelings on the soundtrack. I'll have to reserve that for a second viewing. Others have complaints that it spends too much time setting up the future instead of being it's own movie, but from my perspective it doesn't get any more comic book than that. Until recently I had recalled SM1&2 still being great movies despite my preferring TASM and hating Tobey and Dunst, but I just rewatched them last week and realized that it was nostalgia talking and SM was awful, and SM2 was a good deal better but still loaded with problems and has reached the point of not quite holding up anymore."

Here's the complete poll results. Kind of funny that Spider-Man 3 received 3%, no?

Finally saw The Amazing Spider-Man 2 earlier today, and I've got to say, it's easily my favorite Spider-Man movie so far.

I was never a fan of the Raimi Spider-Man films (way too campy, bad acting/writing, among other things), but I've loved Webb's 2 films so far, especially this latest one. The first Amazing Spider-Man was great, up until the third act. I think Connors was portrayed well in the movie, but by that third act, I felt something was missing from his characterization (I recently realized it was his family that I was missing... could have been so much more compelling in my opinion if, on top of trying to protect NY City, Spider-Man was trying to protect the Connors family from the good doc... that was always my favorite aspect of the character anyway... but I digress).

This latest one, at least after the first viewing, was great all the way through. Garfield and Stone are, once again, spectacular as Spidey and Gwen. The action sequences were sensational. And I thought DeHaan and Fox did great jobs as the villains in this movie (and I also like Giamatti's 2 little scenes as the Rhino... those were 2 short but sweet fight scenes).

The movie's corny but it has a clear story to tell with refined characters. That outweights any stylistic choices Sam Raimi did. Also, the movie is basically a homage to those first Spidey comics.

The arc of Peter slowly losing his powers trying to figure out the balance between personal life and hero life is illustrated so well I'd say this should be used as a text book example.

The cgi is outdated but the way they use it (Doc Ock's shades when Spidey's swinging towards him) and the final swing at the end is just pure genious and exhilirating.

EDIT. I can't believe The Amazing Spider-Man got more votes than Spider-Man. TASM was so boring and everything it did contrast to the original was a downgrade minus the cgi.

@punyparker: It's fine, after all it could have been much worse. I've been on this site for less then a year, and have already had my share of ignorant fanboys misread what I'm trying to say and attack me for it. At least you kept things coherent and reasonable.

I didn't see it as an insult, you either expressed your opinion(which you did) or legitimatelly asked a question.
It's not wrong in any way.

After all it's all opinions. If you say your favorite movie is Spider-Man 3,it's your opinion ,and i can do nothing about it,except hit my head on the wall.... :P

I like both Amazing Spider-Man's more than any of the Raimi films. ASM2 is easily one of my favorite comic books movies of all time.

P.S. - Don't like my opinion? Cool.

@jokercell: The Peter Parker in the comics is awkward, nerdy, shy, and determined to find out about the world while struggling to balance his life. I think Tobey Maguire nailed the role pretty well, better than Andrew.

I honestly still have NO IDEA how can people say Tobey doesn't fit in the Spider-man suit. I watched Spider-man 2 again yesterday with a thought of that in my mind, and he's not as weird as people think he is or make him out to be.

And it's also a fact that The Amazing Spider-man (first part) was utter piss poor compare to Spider-man 1. Now I hope nobody needs me to say that or repeat that cause it doesn't take a genius to figure it out.

How can anyone like the The Amazing Spider-Man movies more than the first two Sam Raimi Spider-Man flicks? I liked how Andrew Garfield portrayed Peter Parker more like he was in the comics, but Marc Webb has done this new franchise a disservice.

I still don't get why people like Spider-Man 2

Look.

It's the movie where we see the best acting from the whole trilogy.
It's the movie in which the predictable plot(Parker struggling with his powers, romantic conflict, good guy turned villian) is the most interesting from the whole trilogy
It's the movie which has more Spider-Man than any other Spidey film.
And the action scenes are the best in a Superhero film,to date.

This is enough for people to like it.....that's what no producer-filmmaker has got yet.
We are not difficult to satisfy, like everyone claims.

Hence, I told him to ignore you.

I guess I didn't understand why you thought it was odd to see him be hit in the face a bunch of times if Spidey was holding back. If he wasn't holding back I could see why that would be odd.

Just to clarify, it's odd because in the comics he would have been so much harder to hit and/or would have been affected more by the punches?

I'm busy at work and this doesn't have my full attention, so apologies if I've missed your previous explanation.

Even while holding back, Spider-Man is attempting to defeat Otto -- likely by knockout. So he's holding back, but still, even while holding back, these should be punches that are felt and make him tumble around, at the very least. Like I've said, I can simply shut off the brain and enjoy the spectacle, but it's a little jarring to see the old guy get slugged in the face so frequently and be perfectly fine.

Yes, in the comics, Spider-Man can turn off Otto's lights with one punch if he wants to.

Also, for only granting me part of your attention, you must use this scan the next time you have a question.

@k4tzm4n: I'm just not sure I understand what you're saying.

The fact that Doc Ock's condition deteriorated from being hit by Spiderman is something that was left out of the movie, which I think is fine given that they have to adjust stories for the medium.

If that is excluded, I don't think it matters how strong Spiderman is. Just like if Superman brawls with people far weaker than him....they don't have to use all their strength.

Peter is a good kid and wasn't trying to kill Doc Ock. I would think he would be hitting him enough to try and knock him out, certainly not using his full strength (which is strong enough to stop a moving NYC subway car).

In that sense, seeing Doc Ock being hit several times in the face seems entirely reasonable., to me at least. I may still be missing something though.

You asked about their encounters in the comics, I explained. What's not to get, silly billy?

No one is saying Spider-Man is using his full strength against Ock. No one who knows even the basics of the character would ever suggest that. What I did say is that it's odd that, in the movie, Ock is punched in the face multiple times and doesn't seem fazed by it. Obviously Peter's holding back, but even then, it's funny how many times Otto gets a punch to the nose and keeps going on just fine. On top of this, I even explained why I'm able to overlook it, so I'm not sure why there's any confusion here.
