Can Lex Luthor be Trusted with Batman's Secret?

Some big things are happening between Lex and Batman in the pages of JUSTICE LEAGUE.

Minor spoiler if you haven't read FOREVER EVIL and JUSTICE LEAGUE #30 and #31.

After the events of FOREVER EVIL and Nightwing's identity being publicly exposed, Lex Luthor has discovered one of the biggest secrets in the DC Universe--he knows Batman's secret identity. Lex appears to now want to do good after helping save the day in FOREVER EVIL, but this is Lex Luthor we're talking about. He approached Bruce Wayne about his discovery.

No Caption Provided

Because Batman was forced to work with Lex to take on the Crime Syndicate, Lex became a hero. With the world not trusting the Justice League so much after the Syndicate's rampage, Lex pretty much forced his way onto the team. But Lex has always wanted to be the best. He wanted to be better than Superman and be the hero the world needs. The questions is, can be be trusted? Also, can he be trusted knowing Batman's secret identity?

Well secret identities in comics aren't what they once were. I am not even sure why they are still a major part of the medium.

You assume that New 52 is going to be exempt for a Crisis on Infinite Earths style event to 'fix' things.

All it would take is for Barry to touch Pandora, or something stupid like that and all the pre 52 memories come rushing back. They can do anything they want..and hit the reset button at anytime....just saying.

@mrtummytumms: It wasn't exactly outright stated, but in the conclusion to Death Of The Family, Bruce tells everyone the reason for why he was never actually worried about Joker's claim of being in the cave and knowing all their identities.

Some time in the past Batman discovered one of Joker's playing cards laying on the floor of the batcave. At the time he assumed that Joker had managed to follow the batmobile all the way back to the cave and that his whole identity must have been blown (though in reality the card was just stuck to the batmobile and fell off when it pulled into the cave). The next time Joker was back in Arkham, Bruce decided to confront Joker in his civilian identity (bringing the playing card he found along with him), but Joker was completely unresponsive; Almost as if he were choosing to believe that Bruce Wayne wasn't even there. Bruce then concludes that Joker's obsession with him begins and ends with the Batman identity. Maybe Joker knows Batman's identity but chooses to ignore it, or maybe his psychosis prevents him from ever really making the connection between the two identities. Its left kinda vague, I found.

fairly certain it was the "batboat" or whatever because they talked about it going up through the canals and caves and the joker wouldnt be able to hold his breath that long or survive the currents

See that's what I was thing. There was just the card on the bottom of the boat that made them question if the Joker actually made it into the cave and found out their identities, but Bruce told them that it was impossible.

DC's masked heroes have been fighting for so long, WHO DOESN'T KNOW who they are by now.

Doesn't Riddle and a certain Doctor knew Batman's identity. Luthor's known before who Batman was before New 52 any way.

Hell an entire Government Group Knew of Batman's identity...and lets Not forget The League of Shadows and

NOW in new 52 The Court of Owls...Bane still knows too.

SHIT the list is HUGE when you think about it...one more in the fire that wants to burn me, Batman says.."Bit***s get in Line."

Maybe they pull an Identity Crises, and wipe his mind clear of Batman's identity. That would be a hoot

Well, if Batman's identity ever gets revealed to the public, it is going to be a pain for the writers to find a way to retcon that. I can't imagine the next 75 years of Batman comics having the whole world know who he really is, it would be too much of a departure from the core of the character.

I think Bruce should be more worried that if Lex put it together who else could. True, Lex is one of the most brilliant minds in the DC universe but he's not alone... Hell Tim Drake figured it out just by watching Dick Grayson... seems to me Bruce might want everyone mindwiped of Dicks identity.

I think it would be very interesting, and refreshing, if DC stuck with Lex as much more of an anti-hero than a villain, for quite a long time. The sort of guy who is willing to do whatever it takes, cross any line, to protect the earth. Would put him in a great position, story-line wise.

And would also allow DC to explain why Lex would never out Batman... because the world needs Batman.

@w0nd: nightwing isn't A List sales wise so its not to harmful, in fact i think changing nightwing into a spy will be beneficial in long run, Lets be honest here, there are far to many batman sidekick books using the same story template.

Probably not but it would really only hurt Lex's agenda to out Batman if Lex(really does want to save the world his own way or be apart of it)

But seriously, this was a cool issue lol. Lex is one smart cookie!

Can you imagine though, Lex+Batman=Most dangerous duel in comics lol (for humans I mean) no powers but don't need them when you're Bats or Lex lol.

Obviously though Superman at some point will leave and Lex will get in the JL lol. I don't think Lex will find out about Superman's secret, at least not nearly as easily as he deduced Batman is Bruce Wayne lol.

This would never last even IF Luthor turned over a new leaf. Lex doesn't really fulfill an empty role on the team, I mean Batman is the resident genius, and Cyborg is the tech guy; what can Lex really offer then? Besides you can't really have the two smartest people on Earth on the same team when, they already have the most powerful being on Earth, the fastest man alive, a Green Lantern, a technopath, a guy who can control all aquatic life, and a pissed off Amazon who rivals Supes in power.

I hope Lex can finally see through Clark's glasses. I don't care that his ego won't allow him to believe it, or Clark changes his posture, attitude, and voice. Lex isn't an average Joe, where that excuse can work. All these reporters at the Daily Planet should recognize it right away. When it comes to Superman, everyone has Prosopagnosia.

I think he van be in the sense he doesn't hate batman like most other heroes. Additionally it seems like he wants some really weird relationship(possibly romantically) with batman based off his comment about not getting invited to the bat cave.

@mrtummytumms: Its never fully confirmed, but evidence suggests joker does know where the bat cave is and that bruce is batman, he just doesn't care because the joker doesn't want their relationship to end.

Batman finds a Joker card in on the floor bat cave after destroying a joker blimp, but doesn't believe joker could of survived that far a journey to batcave. at end of the story its revealed that bruce wayne took the card to joker at arkham, which would confirm to joker that bruce wayne is batman or at least extremely well connected to batman. However, the Joker doesn't seem to care and give no reaction to wayne giving him the card.

Joker has the opportunity to remove the mask but doesn't because he already knows. Joker attacks Alfred at wayne manor (but its suggested this because wayne is supporting Batman Incorporated). The Joker grand plan takes place in the cave system near the bat cave.

to quote batman "I don't believe in coincidence"

I'm not 100% sure if he can be trusted. If my arch-nemesis says he is turning over a new leaf then I would have my doubts. If I was them I either have Martian Manhunter scan his mind to see if he is legit or has a motive. Or ask him a lot more questions while the Lasso of Truth.

I say have him on the team to keep an eye on them and maybe tell him certain details but not all details. Like tell him a plan on taking down a bad guy but don't tell him that The Flash is a cop or Green Lantern is a test pilot. Idk.

I hope Luthor learns Superman is Clark Kent. I think it would make things more interesting if there was a secret social war aspect to their relationship. Like how Peter Parker and Norman Osborn used to be back in the day.

Batman stands for everything, Lex thinks superman, and Metas, take from humanity. I think the best parts of Lex would not want to destroy Batman for that very reason, even to stay out of jail.

We all know Lex Luthor, the minute he messes up the world will hate him again, he oust Bruce Wayne being Batman as some sort of leverage. Luthor maybe a Leaguer now, but trusting him is not an option unless he proves himself to Batman.

yes the secret is more then safe.

DC won't repeat the same mistake marvel did revealing spiderman identity, marvel trapped themselves with that story.therefore lex luthor will never tell the secret.

Plus we all know that joker already knows who he is and where he lives but doesn't care.

well they made that mistake with nightwing to reinvent him... i felt he wasnt really broken in the first place but what do i know

@hushofthewind: Joker doesnt care who Batman realy is.. Its a game for him.

Batman can always ask Martian Manhunter to erase Lexs memory..

+ Lex feels so smart knowing who Batman is.. lol Superman doesnt even wear a mask ..cant he see its Clark?

Lex could if he wanted to but he doesn't care. He has the same mental block that the Joker has. He only wants to destroy Superman. He could give a damn who he is during the day. Also I think his ego would not allow him to believe that his years of planning elaborate schemes for world conquest were halted at every turn by a hick, reporter from Kansas.

That discussion made me laugh. Lex is like " once I found out dick Grayson was night wing I followed the long and murky trail"

I'm like " what's so murky about it? Just put two and two together"
