C2E2 2014: Charles Soule and Steve McNiven to Bring 'Death of Wolverine'

Wolverine is going to have "Three Months to Die."

We may be a few hours away from C2E2 officially opening but Marvel has already announced one bit of news set to come out of the convention. Wolverine is going to die.

No Caption Provided

We've seen characters die before. How will this be different?

Wolverine currently is without his healing factor in the Paul Cornell/Ryan Stegman series. This summer we'll see the 3 Months to Die storyline. This story culminates with a four-issue miniseries called DEATH OF WOLVERINE. The first issue is on sale September 3 and new issues land each week with the last on September 24.

Who is the creative team on this title?

You would think it'd be Cornell and Stegman but miniseries will be written by Charles Soule with art by Steve McNiven.

No Caption Provided

New Marvel executive editor, Mike Marts, addresses the issue of the overuse of comic book deaths. We will see ramifications throughout the Marvel Universe.

"You’re gonna be entering into a world without Wolverine. That affects not only his teammates, but also the Marvel Universe at large. We’ve got a lot of things in the works already."

More information will be revealed Sunday at C2E2 at the Wolverine Panel at 1:15 PM CST.

I guess it'll be kinda like the death of Cap?

He'll be "dead", but not really dead. They will find an explanation and bring him back somehow.

I just hope it takes a while. Otherwise, it would cheapen the emotional impact of a character death. It'd be like... "He's dead! Oh, no! How can I... Oh, there he is again."

Ah yes, the oh so permanent death of a comic book character, ********SPOILERS********** AHEAD

SPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILER

Remeber that time nick fury died and came back to life in the same movie. yeah me too. Death wasn't even permanent before the Superman Story arc, Alfred and Jean Grey has both come back from the dead before Supes did. No way this is permanent (though it would probably be the best arc of marvel NOW!) Anyways peter parker just came back from the dead and it is time for wolvie to get his turn. Can't wait to find out who kills him

marvel please stop with these gimmicks... why not just be honest and say we've got a story called death of wolverine... a new character stepping into the shoes of wolverine and then Wolverine reborn coming up! all with scottie young 2 minutes doodle variant covers! all spoilers will be leaked to the mainstream press in order to encourage people who don't buy comics to buy certain issues because they believe they will be collectable.

So true!

Marvel's just sabotaging themselves. Superior Spider-Man, all this Original Sin Retcon s**t, cancelling books at #4 and re-starting them a week later, giving terrible writers to both Deadpool (He has two writers and they're doing a terrible job) and Wolverine. "Killing" Wolverine off. It's probably gonna be a stupid death. And not too many people seem to be happy about this new Cyclops series starting.

@jonny_anonymous: Have you read the Wolverine story that Cornell is writing? It's like a parody of the character. He made Wolvy lose his heeling factor (but not get animantium poisoning) and Cornell made him bitch out to Sabertooth. And sooo much other stuff like even how Cornell made Wolvy talk was bad.

Now if you're asking how "Sum of Her Parts" was a terrible story then you obviously haven't read it. The main villian has a huge hole in her head where her brain should be and Cornell wasn't good at all at writting Dick or Damian or any other character in that story.

I'm talking current Wolverine and it is very clear you aren't reading it because the stuff you are complaining about has been explained.

I was a long time reader but I dropped it after the all-new-marvel-now! Wolverine #2 because I just couldn't take it anymore. Wolverine is one of my favorite characters but I don't like how Cornell writes. Not to bash the guy personally, I just don't like him as a writer.

What has happened since #2 that would make me change my mind about all this? I'm seriously asking, not being sarcastic.

Personally I've hated Cornell's writing on WOLVERINE as well. I didn't like Alan Davis's art on vol. 5 either. I wanted to drop it multiple times and probably should have, but I didnt want the gap in my Wolverine collection. Stegman's art on Vol. 6 is more to my liking but I still dont like Cornell. It's almost funny that Soule is going to tackle the actual DEATH mini.

As far as Marvel killing Wolverine...I'm fine with it. Should give us some new and unique stories afterwards. We all know we'll be back, no use in complaining. I think 3-5 years is always a length of time to stay dead in comics.

Enough of the whole killing off heroes thing. It never lasts and is starting to become cheap when its built up like this. If anything it should be a surprise at this point.

They've done all they could to destroy his character over the last year or so, ripping away the actual character and making him barely a shadow of himself, so killing him is the only real move left when you've destroyed everything else....it's really a shame what they've done to him in recent years. He was once one of my favorite characters. Now I can't even pick up a comic he is in anymore.

Well i more then anyone want Marvel and DC to bring in permadeath the comics desperatly need them but they won't best shot is 10-20 years they say they do and then a character will stay dead for 10-20 until someone decides to break death again. But even that's a stretch chances are we will never get permadeath in main DC or Marvel continuity. But hey here's to the movies and tv shows doing it. But seriously the benefits would by far outweight the negatives by bringing in permadeath. The only negative is if you want to have a solo series with that dead character. But find an alternative like Miles Morales Spider-Man.

So they are killing Wolverine.

How many times he has already dead in the last five years? Serious.

But this has been always part of the game. C'mon, in the golden age villians died and returned over and over. Is nothing new. Just happen than now they got a more agressive marketing strategy.

And part of the death game is not how he dies, but how he will return. That is what fans wanted more than anything. Will four wolverines try to replace him? Is he time-travelling through his own life? Will he appear as a ghost to counsel X-23 who will have taken the mantle of Wolverine Girl? Will be he condemned to hell? There is the real fun for the story.

Personally I would like than Logan returned amnesic, without memory of his life as an x-man. To return him to the original character. Is a perfect chance to play a OMD on him without any hellish intervention.

If it affects the Marvel world, then what of "Savage Wolverine"? I do know for a fact that Savage Wolverine has nothing to do with Wolverine (Paul Corner), story-wise. Oh, and if Logan will going to die, indeed, then what about the story where he was killed by Sentinel (Uncanny X-Men #142)? I have read that issue and at the end of issue, I guess the X-Men did really changed the history if Wolverine wasn't killed by Sentinel.

Why do you specifically say Marvel? DC is just as guilty except actually more. Marvel has kept some characters dead that have been dead for quite awhile now when they return who knows but DCs death rarely last a year and when they do it's because they have someone else who just happens to be the exact same as the character take over. Also is someone forgetting Superman is the cause of death in comics being broken? DC got away with breaking death Marvel tried it worked for them too and now both just abuse the crap out of it. There are literally comics at DC when a character comes back in the next issue or so. I think Batman has "died" and came back in the same issue once.

I only mentioned Marvel because the article was about a character from that publisher. I'm aware that DC does the same thing. For one, Barry Allen didn't need to come back since everyone was just fine with Wally West. It's stuff like this that sometimes makes me enjoy alt universe or What If? stories more.

Eh i'm mixed on this. On the one hand it will be cool to see his last few months alive until it's retconned. Could be intresting. On the other hand i hate this cheap move of constanly killing off characters just to bring them back to life. It's boring, repetitive, shows no guts, and overall bad writing. But Marvel and DC have been doing the retconned death crap since like the 90s. It's one of the reasons alot of people don't take comics seriously or don't get into them. There's no reason investing in immortal characters. So unless their going to keep him dead (he makes so much money he's their second most iconic character of course they wouldn't start permadeath with him) don't kill him!

This is the dumbest f***ing thing I have ever heard of. Such a stupid ploy to sell comics, but we see how its worked with Superman, Batman, Spider-Man and countless others so I don't anticipate it to last. I just can't imagine a world without the old Canucklehead. Sad. Sad that this is the only way they can think to sell comics, sad that they can't come up with any new ideas, just plain sad. Not like they have anyone close to filling his shoes, so sad.

This will be different because Wolverine is being killed off by a terrible writer that has pretty much already killed everything about the character and has made many Wolverine fans, myself included, drop this comic. Cornell's story hasn't just been "the death of Wolverine", it's been the destruction of everything he ever was as a character.

A better question is, why would Marvel ever hire Cornell to write one of their top titles? I guess no one at Marvel ever read Cornell's Batman and Robin story "The Sum of Her Parts" which was by far the worst modern Batman story I've ever read.

Explain to me how any of that is remotely true?

Well I can personally vouch for him when it comes to the Batman and Robin arc, however I must say Winick's Red Hood arc and the final issue by Hine were probably worse.

Though Cornells Action comics was great, and I hear a lot of praise for Demon Knights.

Well I was talking about the Wolverine stuff

Honestly, I'm somewhat skeptical if they mean Wolverine is going to be "dying" in the physical sense, or if Marvel means that metaphorically, he'll be completely different after this whole fiasco is done with.... I dunno, if he does die, I at least hope he'll be back like in months, and I really hope they won't do a battle of the cowl type thing in regards to whom will be the new Wolverine.

Even if Wolverine was actually killed off forever, I don't really see this happening unless they introduced new sons or daughters of his other than Daken (who is still kind of dead but ish) in the guise of something similar as Reign of the Supermen.

This is how Doc Ock comes back. His memories some how end up in Logan's brain and since he has no healing factor his brain can't expel them. Ock becomes Wolverine and now he can be a hero more in line with his own brutal line of justice.

This is happening.
