Best Comic Covers of the Week: 8/10/12

Indie books take the cake in this week's best covers!

Admittedly, it wasn't hard to pick our favorite comic covers this week -- the ones we chose just really stood out to us as some of the best.

First up is the cover to issue #0 of THE CREEP from Dark Horse Comics. If you're going to launch an all-new Indi comic, get Frank Miller to draw the first cover to your series. That should definitely bring some attention to the book. Looking through all the covers this week I spotted this one immediately. I am personally a big fan of Frank's grotesque style, so the moment I saw it I knew it was Miller. With a black backdrop and detailed inks, would you mess with this "creep"?

The only comic cover that isn't for an independent comic is the gorgeous image by Francesco Francavilla for RESURRECTION MAN #12. It's hard to let a week go by without a mention of a Francavilla cover, and this is exactly why. His cover for this week is both striking and vibrant. The glowing eyes of the silhouette in the background are eerie and pull you in. It's a really lovely cover.

When digital painting is done well, the result can be absolutely breathtaking. Artist Mike Huddleston's cover for THE STRAIN #7 is a great example of that. The image beautifully captures the tone of the comic through the depiction of fear and horror on the character's face. It's a beautifully drawn, detailed image that offers fantastic perspective.

Finally we have the cover to Scott Snyder's AMERICAN VAMPIRE: LORD OF NIGHTMARES #3 of 5. The cover is beautifully executed by artist Dustin Nguyen who depicts the central characters of the story in this very pretty bouquet of colors. The watercolors compliment his style perfectly and just blend in a way that is absolutely breathtaking. Also, note how the deep red looks a lot like a pool of blood encircling the characters? I thought that was a nice touch.

Now, I'm sure we missed some great covers to this week's new releases, so don't forget to let us know what some of your favorites are by posting them in the forums!
