Awesome Toy Picks: DC Comics Super-Villains--Ultraman

A cool collectible you'll want to add to your collection.

Each week we take a close look at a comic book collectible. That means taking it out of the package. FOREVER EVIL might be over but members of the Crime Syndicate live on in action figure form courtesy of DC Collectibles' Super-Villains line. We decided to look at possibly the biggest super-jerk on the team, Ultraman!

Like the other members of the Crime Syndicate and citizens of Earth-3, Ultraman is pretty much the opposite of Superman. Superman has often been referred to as the ultimate boy scout and such. FOREVER EVIL showed us just what Ultraman was capable of. This is a guy willing to move the moon out of orbit in order to cause an eclipse on Earth to prevent the sun harming him with no concern over the citizens of Earth.

With this character, you have traces of Superman's persona but it oozes the personality of Ultraman.

No matter which way he's looking, you can see the smug attitude pouring off him.

Utraman is probably the type of guy that might ask you if you want to go to the gun show. And then regardless if you told him, "No thanks," he'd proceed to show you his.

The DC Collectibles New 52 figures are one of my favorite lines. They have just the right amount of articulation and the detail is great. Even looking at something as simple as Ultraman's boots, you can clearly see these are not Superman's boots. I dig the pointy-ish form of them rather than the typical rounded ones we usually see.

Then there's Ultraman's cape. His cape may not have the same origin as Superman's in the New 52. It may not be as indestructible. Either that or he's just allowed himself to get in some pretty hairy situations. It's a molded rubber and that allows it to have more give and the appearance of an actual cape.

When I heard an Ultraman figure was coming, I'll admit I wasn't immediately super-excited, mainly because of his portrayal in the comics. But seeing him, it's cool to have this darker version of Superman. The red eyes is a perfect touch and he just looks so dang smug.

You might have already picked up this figure. You might be able to find it at your local comic shop. You can also order it directly from DC Collectibles from the luxury of your home (or smart phone or tablet) by visiting DC's online shop (although, it may be temporarily out of stock). The figure retails for $24.95. The 6.75" size means it'll fit perfectly with your other New 52 figures.
