A New Spider-Girl Title's Coming

But who's wearing the webs this time?

One guess as to who's wearing the webs.
One guess as to who's wearing the webs.

Thanks to Closure for bringing this to our attention. Comixtreme’s got the cover for the upcoming issue of Previews and it’s promoting a new SPIDER-GIRL series that’s hitting in November. This isn’t an entirely new Spider-Girl, however.  If you’ve been reading AMAZING SPIDER-MAN lately, you’ll know that the just-finished GRIM HUNT storyline restructured Spidey’s “family” at bit.

See, Madame Web’s been killed by Sasha Kravinoff but, before she died, she passed her seer powers on to Julia Carpenter (who's alternately known as Arachne and Spider Woman II.) Now that Carpeneter’s effectively become Madame Web II, she’s passed her costume along to Araña. However, in spite of Spidey’s suggestions, Araña insists she won’t be calling herself Spider-Girl. Judging by this preview, it looks like she’ll be reneging her assertion eventually.

The funny thing is that Araña was originally going to be called "Spider-Girl" when she debuted in that AMAZING FANTASY revival in ’04. Fans were miffed about that conflicting with the MC2 SPIDER-GIRL and, as I recall, their response got this new character dubbed Araña. Bleeding Cool actually ran a bit about this last week, wherein "Mayday" Paker's creator, Tom Defalco, put a statement about her adventures concluding (for good) with the SPIDER-GIRL: THE END one-shot. == TEASER ==

How many books that debuted in '98 are still running today?
How many books that debuted in '98 are still running today?

I think 12 years, three solo series and more than 150 issues worth of appearances (at least) is an unequivocally impressive run for any character or creative team. It's doubly-impressive considering how long SPIDER-GIRL's outlasted the entire MC2 line. Of course, this is comics, after all - - I’m sure you’ll be seeing Mayday return someday. She’ll probably even have some crossover/meet up with Araña eventually.

What's maybe more interesting is how this is another example of the Marvel U accumulating more “legacy heroes” lately - - something that's traditionally been DC's domain. And it opens the inevitable question to the Comic Vine community. Are you Team Mayday or Team Araña?

I liked what I saw from the new Spider-Girl during "Grim Hunt" so I may have to check this new series out. At the very least, I'm glad they have plans for these characters as opposed to letting them waste away on the sidelines.

Agreed, they bring lots of good characters in, then after a few issues they just vanish. Hopefully since this particular Spider-Girl is in a couple books already, she won't be tossed to the wind.

Team Arana for me.
616 Marvel and brings a little cultural diversity to comics.

Hate the whole l"legacy" thing though. And a lot of Grim Hunt just didn't work for me because of the tenuous "spider" connections and magic side. I mean really, other than a name what connextion do any of the spider character other than Pete and Arana have? They were the only ones we'd ever been told had any kind of link to Eziekiel and the spider cult.
And wasn't Alyosha previously established as more of a good hunter, anti hero type? I remember him teaming with spidey on more than one occation.

Kinda saw this coming from the ending of Grim Hunt. Arana is a cool character, so I'm glad this is happening.

I think it's a good move on Marvel's part.  Fans always accept a "legacy" or "family" character better than they do a derivative character.  Arana was cool, but clearly derivative of Spider-Man.  As Spider-Girl, she's part of the "Spider-Man Family," and will be more widely accepted, and yes, more marketable.  Plus, it keeps the name "Spider-Girl" alive in the Marvel Universe, without having to constantly make up the future of the Marvel U to sustain it in stories.  I liked the Mayday Parker character, but this is an excellent move on Marvel's part.

Spider-Girl is over?
Why?  I liked that.  Couldn't they have one be something like Spider-Girl and the other be Amazing Spider-Girl?

No...wait...erm....

You're right that it kinda works to get her more recognition. From a business stand point I kinda get it but still wish the whole lecagy idea or character xerox of any kind would stop.

Team Mayday for me. I'd be a LOT more appreciative of an  Araña "Spider-Girl" series if Mayday hadn't just lost her series. Why couldn't Spider-Girl and Spectacular Spider-Girl have co-existed? They're in different universes for crying out loud.

@Gylan Thomas:
Oh, I totally disagree.  I think the legacy character is far better than the constant reboots, moving the character's origins up to the now, moving  their ages back to the teen years, etc.  I think comics need to move on, letting modern characters get older and newer characters take their place.

I kind of think that's why Marvel seems to be embracing the legacy character idea.  Their last several events have been parts of larger, continuing stories, and those stories include character deaths and new, mutant births.  If that's going to mean anything, mutant babies have to age and new heroes have to rise to replace the dead.  They've already established with Spider-Girl (May) that fans like a future Marvel Universe, so they may be approaching that future from the present stories - setting up legacies, letting characters age and have children, etc.  I could be completely wrong about Marvel's motivations, but I see a definite value to legacy characters.

Plus, the business is different today.  It used to be you had to keep a character current, so he stayed visible, and kept the copyright going.  Keeping the trade paperbacks in print does that now, so it's not necessary for the character to forever be alive and young in the current continuity.

What I find interesting is how Marvel's going into the "Families" direction, first the Hulk Family, now the Spidey Family, and Fraction seems to be making an Iron Man Family, first War Machine, and now Pepper with her Rescue armor, who's going to be wearing an armor next? Plus what about a Cap Family? You got Bucky, Steve, Sharon Carter, Black Widow, Falcon, Rikki Barnes (Nomad).

But I do like that Arana's stepping up, I mean she's always been an interesting character to me, but now she's got an epic name and now's getting a new series!!! :D

I am a Mayday fan for life and very angry that marvel is trying to replace her right after she gets cancelled. At first I liked Arana and thought she had potential but, now that she is stealing Mayday's spotlight I am disliking her a little more.

This may seem crude, but Spider-Man is totally checking out Spider-Girl on that cover. It looks like he's staring unashamedly as her posterior.

Oh yeah making more fans mad and making them leave marvel is a good thing.  This is getting more negative then good that is not a good thing.  Now if it was arana series just in the new costume it would be thing but just slapping fans in the face just three months after Spider-Girl The End comes out with a baseball bat.  That is what this is.
Team Mayday all the way.  The REAL Spider-Girl 4EVER!

Nooooooo!
I loved that she called herself Arana made her one of the very few Latin super heroes...
With Spider-Girl as her new title it takes that Latin away from her character...

I hope she still speaks Spanish from time to time thought... What I'm wondering thought is how this will affect the Young Allies book?

I am willing to give this a chance before I completely write it off, but I agree with the above thoughts on Mayday.  I don't understand why they can't coexist, or just let Mayday run with it.

One another thing I thought of is why couldn't they keep Real Spider-Girl as back-up?  This why I think Joe q hatred for anything that Peter and MJ together.  Now gotten ride of the last book that has them together in one way or another.  I am sure Joe q had a hand with Bendis putting Peter and Gwen together in the new Ultimate Spidey.  Though I bet they will never admit it.  And again it's not the costume but the new name change.

Spider Girl is like Robin in that there are 5 or 6 of her. This was a cool twist in getting tied up with Maddam Web. It kills off one of the too many spiders and yet combines them so we don't lose anything really. Thedeath gave Grim Hunt weight and consolidated underused characters. Good move on Marvel's part.

Same here.  I wish Joe Q could just keep his personal qualms about their relationship out of his professional decisions, instead of contaminating one of the best and most successful relationships in comics, and certainly in Marvel comics, and forcing it, like a cancer, to infect everything it can get its hands on. I can't read anything Spider-man related any more, because everything now has the bitter aftertaste of Joe Quesada.

I'm with team Mayday, the one true Spider-Girl.  I have nothing against Arana except the fact that Marvel just cancelled the real Spider-Girl who has gathered 12 years worth of history not to mention a lot of loyal and passionate fans just so they could steal the name and slap it on Arana to try and sell her new series.  Let Arana sink or swim on her own merits don't steal from the hard work of DeFalco and his team who have built up the name of Spider-Girl into a valuable commodity.

They probably never gave Spectacular Spider-Girl series a chance.  They doomed it with the 3.99 and back-up.  They didn't give it advertising or announce it at all.  Just put it out and failed.  Would have done a little better.   Maybe or maybe not but 3.99 price tag didn't help in my mind.  People can't afford these prices much.  We will probably here more on this at Comic Con which was more then they gave Mayday in recent years.  Which goes back to Joe q v.s. the marriage point.  I have said that Joe q has been trying to get ride of Mayday for a while but fans have spoken to loud.   So they tried everything to have fail but they win in the end.  Bad guys win because sales (back to 3.99) point) and they finally got what they wanted.  Now to really try to keep fans down they bring in a new present day spider-girl.  Marvel hoping we just forget about mayday.  Nope.  This also reminds me a bit what dc did with Impulse/Bart Allen.  Under different circumstances though but a character that had a series that was canceled and replacing a liked character.  Much like that flash this will fail.  I won't be surprised to find out it last about much as Brother Voodoo's series.

But where does the logic come in when just a couple months after the end of Mayday last book you release a 616 version?  If they weren't happy before they are not now.  Not much changed except you may have just made them even more mad.   What does marvel think SG fans would roll over and just accept the new one and throw away what they cared for 12 years?
I was thinking about this some more.  Business sense makes no sense unless there is secret mayday back-up which I doubt.  You are dooming it to fail before it comes out.  A. cause spider-girl fans mostly likely aren't going to pick it up.  B. some retailers may just see this another sg series and don't support.  C. You got a character that couldn't support a book it's own which was sad since book wasn't to bad.

Marvel don't care, they didn't like May because she wasn't part of the  616 Continuity and wanted to get rid of her and a Spider-girl that would be part  of the 616 Continuity, also when did Logic factor into Legacy Characters anyway.

@leokearon:You made my point I been making everywhere but for different reasons.  I think it has to more do with last pre OMD.  It seemed to be last domino.   Now you could be right but Marvel will never tell us the truth either way.
To logic my point is there no logic to it.  I guess part of me still trying to figure out why Marvel is so out there and making the same old mistakes.  Though again the sky is falling and marvel doesn't care it seems.
Also again I don't dislike Arana.  She just not spider-girl.  I feel bad because the character deserves better to be stuck with the name probably will kill her chance at another series for a long time. I be surprised if went past 12 issues.

OK so I by graphic novels not comics, I'm also a huge fan of continuity and the whole legacy concept. That considered I was planning on buying the "Web of Spider-man" Storyline.

My question is: Is it a stand alone series or does it cross and mix with "Grim Hunt" too? Cauz now you got me intrigued by "Grim Hunt".

Grim Hunt is a part of the (official) main Spidey storyline right? Honestly IMO theres too many so I tend to buy the graphics with the best storylines art and the most action.
