Aquaman Rebirth
Aquaman stops a group of men running from the law. Later he decides not to go back to Atlantis.
My Thoughts:This is one of the new 52 series I had been looking most forward too. I like Aquaman and I've been dying to read a great Aquaman series. When I heard Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis were going to be the creative team for the series I was ecstatic. I had high hopes they would deliver the type of Aquaman comic I've been wishing to read and they didn't disappoint.
As everyone knows, Aquaman's character has received a lot of criticism over the years. What made this first issue so great was how Geoff Johns takes all that negativity and flips it on everyone. Who said Aquaman wasn't cool? Definitely not Geoff Johns. He shows everyone how cool Aquaman truly is and we're only one issue into the series.
Johns begins by showing Aquaman in action. He displays a fierce, brave and bold Aquaman who clearly has a strong affinity for justice. While his morality is strong, he's quick to get upset about people who make jokes at his expense. While he was trying to get some lunch in a seafood diner, a young man begins asking him questions for his blog. Aquaman gets upset when the man asks him how it feels to be nobody's favorite super-hero. Just another example of how Geoff Johns isn't attempting to act like this character hasn't received his fare share of criticism. I'm glad he's not ignoring it. Instead he's facing it head on and I think that's part of what made this issue so good.
The issue finishes strong as we get our first look at Mera who meets Aquaman on the seashore. The panels of these two were so gorgeous. The one where they're kissing with the lighthouse in the background was one of my favorites. I can't say I saw what was coming next but I'm definitely thrilled about it. Aquaman tells Mera he wants a new life above land and away from Atlantis with her. I think it will be a lot of fun and very exciting to see Aquaman adventures above land.
DC couldn't have picked a better artist for this series than Ivan Reis. The man is extremely talented. I'm really digging the way he's drawing Aquaman. What Reis excels at are facial expressions. They tend to say a million words. I loved the painted effect of the flashback panels especially the one where a young Aquaman and his father are sitting in the diner. This has to be some of my favorite art out of the new 52. It's simply breathtaking.
They might as well have called this Aquaman Rebirth because that's what it is. Geoff Johns did it with Green Lantern and Flash, now we get that same feeling once again that he's about to breathe life into an old character. DC couldn't have picked a better writer than Geoff Johns to write Aquaman.
