Superman has been a topic of much debate since the New 52 started. Having Superman wear a t-shirt, jeans and boots in ACTION COMICS seemed weird at first but Grant Morrison quickly took the title to great places. When he made the announcement that issue #16 would be his last one, many began to worry.

    No Caption Provided

After a lot of speculation and rumors, DC is finally ready to reveal who the creative team will be to take over the series. It won't be with issue #17 though. The action will begin in issue #18 next Spring.

DC has announced on their blog, beginning with issue #18, Andy Diggle (THE LOSERS, GREEN ARROW: YEAR ONE) will be the writer and Tony Daniel (DETECTIVE COMICS, JUSTICE LEAGUE) will be the artist.

Here's what Andy Diggle had to say:

I’ve always had a positive experience working with DC Comics, and it’s amazing to be welcomed back into the fold in such fine style. Even in an industry dominated by superheroes, Superman is THE superhero – the original and best - and I’m flattered, daunted and inspired in equal measure at being given the opportunity to build on such an incredible and historic legacy. The word ‘iconic’ is bandied around a lot in comics, but Superman defines the term. I’m excited to be working with Tony Daniel, whose artistic and storytelling skills will be bringing the world(s) of Superman to stunning visual life. Together we’ll be carving out spectacular new adventures that respect the past while redefining the future of the Man of Steel.

Here are Tony Daniel's thoughts on taking over the art duties:

First, let me say that I am really excited to be working with Andy Diggle on ACTION COMICS. Superman is a character I've wanted to work on for quite a while now and I'm now very fortunate to be given this tremendous opportunity to work with such an iconic character. I look forward to drawing each and every character in Superman's universe. I anticipate this being a fun ride for me and hopefully for Superman fans as well. I can't wait to get Andy's first script and sharpening my pencils! Thank you everyone for your support of my work on BATMAN and DETECTIVE COMICS over the years. I already miss the Dark Knight, but I look forward to starting anew with the Man of Steel in ACTION COMICS. I hope to see you all in Metropolis!

ACTION COMICS #18 goes on sale in March.

Well, not that the art is bad, but somebody really wants to tie the comics to the upcoming film. Look at that costume:

No, the art is pretty bad. As far as the costume design goes, it's less simplistic than the film's, but overall the red just sort of holds it back from something that could set itself apart from pre-Flashpoint. Drokk the cape for the most part.

I feel like a read somewhere that Morrison's last issue got pushed back to 17 instead of 16, which would explain why Diggle and Daniel aren't taking over creative duties on the book until issue 18.

I'm actually happy Morrison is off the book. He should stick to graphic novels.

Well Diggle does have an impressive resume but Shadowland was abominable. Plus Daniel's art isn't always at its best. But these two have great potential. The cover looks enticing. What's up with the grey Superman 0 suit though?

Agree on the first one but WHAAAATT?! on the second one?! Sorry but Morrison has been the saving grace of Superman in the first year of the New 52. His work is light years ahead of the past Superman run in the New 52. He's done fantastic things with the character and made AC one of the best titles of the New 52. Why should he stick to graphic novels?

Never read Andy Diggle, but it's still going to be better than anything the main Superman book is pumping out. Tony Daniels, despite being a crappy writer, is a great artist, so I might give it a look.

@Lvenger: when action comics starts tellin stories in the same timeline as superman then superman will def start gettin better.a major cause for the poor stories in Superman was due to lack of communication between grant and the other writers no one knew or what he had planned exactly n because its set in the past makes it even more difficult.

@UltimateSMfan: That's the editors' fault, not Morrison's. He was telling fantastic stories which the editors didn't then communicate to the other Superman writers. You can't blame Grant for telling his usual awesome stories. The timeline should have no effect on good Superman stories which Morrison delivered in spades.

Supposedly Morrison is very tight-lipped about the stories he's writing, which if I remember correctly Perez said so himself just before leaving the Superman book. While I've absolutely loved Morrison's Action, that's kind of a dickhead move when you're working on a character's past stories and another writer's working on his present day one's.

@Cooke76: Hmm I guess. But Superman hasn't even been remotely good. The writing's been vile and lack luster. Perez and Giffen are capable of so much better yet they didn't deliver here.

Diggle has done quite a bit of work outside of the Big Two, he usually writes darker stories that, while (usually) very good, certainly aren't very Superman-oriented. I was really surprised to hear he'd be writing Action Comics, because it doesn't seem like his style. I'm excited to see what he'll do though.
