Well here I was just looking over my recent issue of empire when I discovered Avatar The Last Air Bender article, now I have followed the cartoon of and on and never really played that much attention to the whole series but my mouth dropped when I saw how impressive the film is setting up to be. Not only in scale but in sheer beauty, It seems to have taken inspiration from movies such as Hero, Red Cliffs and so on. I began to become a bit more hyped when I saw the talent behind the movie and how passionately they began speaking about the actually movie. M. Night Shyamalan has stepped in to direct the movie after it was brought to his attention by his daughter, it is something new for the director and he has really taken the sprit of the series and ran with it and so far the casting for the film has only sparked my interest more. Jason Rathbone better known as Jasper in twilight has taken on the role of Sokka, while his love interest Suki will be played by Jessica Andres who is a rising star recently making the change from tv to movies and Nicola Peltz takes on Katara in her first big budget epic completes the team to start with .
But saving the best for last Aang himself is being played by an known who completely fits the part Noah Ringer born in Texas brings a level of skill and professionalism you would struggle to find in most adult actors, His arch rival Zuko will be played by Dev Patel who most will remember from Slum Dog Millionaire he so far is the only one I am worried about, he just does not come across as evil enough for this role but I could be wrong, the full cast line up is over on IMDB at the moment so check it out you wont be disappointed
As you can see from the pictures this movie is going all out in costume and scenery, It was suggested that this will be a trilogy set out across the story of the series, but Shyamalan hinted that this was just a guide and if the films do take off they may make more taking the story further then the actually series, of course he is working close with Michael Dante DiMartino.
I have high hopes that if this can be done with Aang then maybe all my fears about future adaptions of animation into live action will not go down the road of Dragon Ball Z and Speed Racer, Maybe the studios will realize sticking to the original material may be what the fans of the world have been waiting for.
